After the killing of a mentally ill inmate allegedly at the hands of three correctional deputies last august, exposed gaps in the current surveillance camera system, the sheriff was told by county official that a new system would cost 20 million and take 2 years to install so out of frustration yesterday, she went to costco and bought a 12 camera system which cost 761 and was installed in one night. In its first big test, it seemed to pass with flying colors not only giving the sheriff and all the others involved in the jail a chance to see how it happened but the fact that it recorded the incident. They now have a record that can be used for any evidence purposes if charges are brought later. Sheriff smith her timing could not have been better. I dont know if that was luck involved but this is somewhat embarrassing to the county that she had to fight so hard to get these cameras nut there. How are they going to be used in the future . In terms of what the sheriff wants to do she wants the system in here so that it will be a deterrent as well as record any incidents that happened. Well, amid the jailhouse chaos, a san jose judge has just ruled that three correctional deputies who work at that same facility will stand trial for the murder of an inmate. The three accused of beating 31 yearold Michael Tyree to death. They are also accused of assaulting another mentally ill inmate who testified yesterday that he would have died had he resist the. First it was sideshow drivers. Now Oakland Police have their hands full dealing with brazen bikers. This biker posted this video to instagram showing him taunting and outrunning officers. It all comes down to a Public Safety, veronica. The officers arent concerned about the taunting and the laughing. They are more concerned about the bikers putting innocent people in danger. A group of bikers speeding down oakland street with a Police Officer in hot pursuit, the biker recording the chase laughs and taunts the pursuing officer [ laughing and yelling, engines revs ] reporter someone posted videos on instagram this week. A second video shows a different chase also in oakland with lights flashing a Police Officer tries to stop the bikers but they ignored the officer and speed up. It appears in both cases the motorcyclist got away. Whether the taunting of Law Enforcement officer or someone else in their vehicle, this brings a huge danger to the community. And thats one of the biggest things that were going to focus on. Oakland police are concerned about Public Safety with traffic violations. They have to back off to prevent these bikers from crashing into innocent pedestrians. Being more aggressive, yeah, well be more aggressive that when its appropriate to do that. I look at issuing out seizure warrants as being aggressive. Police now have a clear shot of the bikers face. They will issue a warrant to tow the dirt bike when they can track them down. Other riders are doing dangerous stunt on the freeways in oakland. I have been clear and consistent in being against lawlessness and a culture of lawlessness in oakland. Its disappointing to see this video . Oakland mayor libby schaaf says the officers did the right thing. Possibly prevented innocent people from getting hurt. Oakland police point out this is a regional problem. A kpix 5 investigation shows a different bike crew doing stunts in San Francisco. The group was led by a marin county sheriffs deputy who has since been fired. I was actually caught up in one of these stunts just a few months ago. The driver of a mustang who was trying to avoid about 30 or 40 bikers on international boulevard actually hit my car while i was parked on the side. Its one of the states largest and were learning one of the most profitable. If you put your money on casinos succeeding in california, then it turns out your bet was well placed. The graton considers is owned by the confederated indians of rancheria. Other smaller casinos of tribes are not doing so well. River rock is struggling financially. As for the impact on the communities nearby, graton pays more than 5 million back to Sonoma County and eight Million Dollars to the city of rohnert park to offset any Public Safety costs. I think people thought it was the carmageddon all day long and we werent going to be able to get around town but it hasnt brought the doom and gloom that everybody thought it was going to bring. Many. Things that people were saying did not come about. Essentially, so many of the people including the politicians who are against the casino would now have you believe they discovered it. From rainfall totals to snowpack measurements figuring out exactly how california is faring against the drought is complicated. But as kpix 5s Wilson Walker shows us, one helpful scoreboard is a simple check of the states largest reservoir. Looking at that graph is a good snapshot way of seeing how they are looking. They are not looking good right now theyre not looking good right now. Reporter folsom lake was a California Drought postcard but in late december and early january this lake rose nearly 30 feet in 30 days. And despite plenty of warm sunny days since then, the progress is still sitting here. In fact, folsom is still sitting slightly above its historical average for this date. Good news. Now, the bad news is that folsom is an exception. All in all, we are far below where we should be. Reporter a better indication of how were really doing is Lake Oroville californias second largest reservoir. As of today its about 25 below average. Were not really seeing the high water levels that we expected out of it. Reporter some of the numbers get worse as you head south. This lower ramp thats paved, we kind of expected it to be in the water already. Reporter the reservoir in Calaveras County is 70 below average discouraging for a winter that was supposed to be above average. A lot of newspaper and tv stories have been written and produced about el nino and how el nino is going to save us. But it hasnt happened. Reporter it certainly hasnt happened here at the San Luis Reservoir in Merced County which is half empty. If it rains in the next couple of days it might be time to start thinking of this as the 4th quarter. El nino is trailing pretty badly. And its about time to start putting some points back on the board. What kind of threepoint shot do we have to hit . Do we have to hit a steph curry shot from the other side of the timeline .
