looking into an emailed threat that prompted a security sweep of all san francisco public schools. the schools stayed open after it was determined to be a hoax. but kpix 5's cate caugiran shows us the alert still has parents on edge. >> reporter: well, veronica, parents said that this was a bit eerie but they are thankful it was nothing. we also learned that school officials chose not to tell the students about the threat and the parents we talked to say they aren't going to, either. >> my first instinct was to come and drag her out of class and, you know, keep her safe. >> reporter: san this. >> reporter: the superintendent says this threat was emailed to five random district employees just before 10 p.m. last night. but his office didn't know about it until early this morning. >> we immediately then got in contact with san francisco police department. we engaged the fbi in their counter-terrorism unit. and it was all hands on deck. >> reporter: the district ordered school staff to do a security sweep of all the campuses. they found nothing suspicious. as for what the email said? >> someone claiming to have been a student in the district that was bullied and how they turned to religion and because of that they are going to come and shoot up the schools in the district. not specifying any particular school. >> the superintendent wouldn't show us the email but said it was very similar to the one sent to l.a. unified that forced l.a. unified to close all schools tuesday. >> i wasn't worried. if it was something we needed to be worried about, they would have handled it as such. >> reporter: now, even though the district said the threat is not credible, they still will increase security as a precaution. so parents can expect to see an increased police presence. reporting live in san francisco, cate caugiran, kpix 5. new at 6:00, that toxic algae in the ocean that left california's crab season in limbo could be even worse than first thought. kpix 5's don ford on the new concerns over some popular fish. >> we're seeing toxin above the regulatory limit and the filet, the meat of the anchovie. so they were saying decapitate it, gut it and you're fine. that's not true. >> reporter: researchers are using this new tool to monitor the algae levels. it's called, lab in a can. and dozens have been placed off the coast. the labs in a can are battery powered. they collect water data and send back daily reports on the acid concentration by cell phone link. scientists say they have made another surprising discovery in our local salmon. could it get into the tissues of, say, salmon? >> it does. we look at coho salmon and king salmon and found it in both. >> reporter: at what levels? >> well below the regulatory limits so still safe for human consumption. >> reporter: there is good news. the toxic algae bloom is getting smaller but not enough to make crabs safe to eat just yet. scientists say large el ninos have been associated with large algae blooms. and if conditions persist, which they believe they may, we could be in for another big bloom next year. in san francisco, don ford, kpix 5. >> we called the state department of health to ask about what that scientist told us about the anchovies. right now the state says that anchovies are safe to eat. well, by this time tomorrow, the area will be getting wet and it's just the start of our unsettled weather. skies were cloudy over san francisco bay area today. chief meteorologist paul deanno is here with rain on the way. paul. >> rain on the way and an early christmas gift from mother nature. we need a lot of it but not all at once. in the past several storms, they have been good because they brought a decent amount of rainfall but no flooding. this one will be similar. we have minimal impact there. if you are traveling tomorrow in the sierra, though, mountain snowfall will be a moderate concern for you. and the commute, the friday drive home, there is the impact. it is going to be very sloppy on the roads 24 hours from no. we'll talk more about two other systems that will be moving in over the next seven days. that's crutch. >> all right, paul, sounds good. thank turner joins us now live from middletown, where homeowners who have already dealt with one disaster may have to brace themselves for another. emily. >> reporter: that's right, veronica. all that rain that they needed back in september during the "valley fire," well, they are starting to get it now, actually it's already beginning up here. and they say they are worried about what the effects of that could be. ron's house might have survived the "valley fire" but his roads and his neighborhood haven't. >> because of the last rain, all this road just came down here and it ran through here and a car was parked in the gravel here and all of a sudden it was in four inches of mud. >> reporter: he lives on cobb mountain in an area burned by the "valley fire." he worries what this season of rainy weather means for his neighborhood. erosion certainly, or potentially worse, a landslide. foresters say that when a fire burns as hot as the "valley fire" did, it basically seals the top layer of soil so the water just runs right off. and you can see by what has burned behind me there's not much left on that hillside to hold the soil in place. >> on a relative scale, i think there are some pretty risky areas. but that's no guarantee that they are going to fail and it does depend a lot on the weather and how quickly plant regrow and things like that. >> reporter: the usgs mapped the region after the fire. the red areas means there's an 80% probability of debris floe, places like anderson springs the most at risk. but most of the area around middletown has a probability of at least 20 to 40%. >> parted of the mountain that they have already told the pooh -- parts of the mountain that they have already told the people, you can't rebuild because it's in too close proximity to the creeks and stuff. so of some people won't be able to put -- so some people won't be able to put their homes that maybe they have had 30, 40 years like us. >> reporter: and i have spoken to some county officials about whether or not there have been landslides so far. there have been some small ones very minimal nothing out of the ordinary from years past. but we haven't seen the vast majority of these rains yet. so foresters are asking folks to till their land, to put maybe just small seeds of grass to start planting anything, even something as small as mulch can make a big difference in keeping the soil in place rather than sliding down the mountain. emily turner, kpix 5. meanwhile, federal and state agencies are helping homeowners recover from the furious fire season. fema and the small business administration and others are pulling together $30 million for survivors of the beauty and valleys. still ahead, a young athlete facing criminal charges for alleged actions against a the public for compassion. [ loud voice inaudible ] >> reporter: it was an emotional farewell for mario woods. hundreds gathered for funeral services at cornerstone church in the bayview. >> this moment has to turn into a movement a movement for justice. not only for the family of mario woods but for all of us who live and work in this community. >> reporter: the killing of mario woods has prompted outrage here in the bayview community and intense scrutiny on the police department's tools and tactics used in police shootings. [ screaming ] >> reporter: the graphic video has sparked a conversation that has neighbors activists city leaders and mario woods' own mother all calling for reform. [ inaudible ] >> reporter: police say woods had just stabbed somebody, still had the knife in his hand and refused to drop it. they said they had no other choice when they made a move toward them. here as he is buried there's doubt about the police story and some hope the way officers operate will change. >> the present circumstance of our country and police violence especially as it happens to communities of color definitely sets a context and backdrop for what's happened here. >> reporter: city officials are calling for new training on deescalation tactics. meanwhile, the police chief is urging his officers to be able to get tasers but it's still not clear when or whether they will get them. live in san francisco, joe vazquez, kpix 5. prosecutors plan to file first-degree murder charges against a 39-year-old woman and her boyfriend for the deaths of two small children. investigators say tami joy huntsman and her 17-year-old boyfriend gonzalo curiel killed the three-year-old and six- year-old kids. their bodies discovered in a storage locker in redding on sunday. the couple's arrest came after police discovered a 9-year-old girl who was also in huntsman's care. she was behind the church last thursday night. someone broke into a storage locker and walked away with $2,000 worth of donated presents. >> we don't know who it was, why, just that they are missing. >> reporter: it was part of the annual giving tree gift drive run by the st. vincent depaul society in which needy families place paper ornaments on a tree in the church with requests. the group began collecting gifts in september and volunteers had just finished wrapping them up. the thieves tore through all of the presents and took what they wanted. >> now with just a week before christmas, the
