New details on a deadly officer involved shooting that shut down a stretch of highway 101 in san mateo for hours. Chopper 5 showing us the scene last night. This is near the 92 interchange. Northbound lanes were closed for more than eight hours causing a major backup. They reopened around 2 a. M. Thats some sound from chp dispatch. Here is what weve learned. When officers arrived they found the suspect brandishing his gun while trying to carjack a 55yearold driver he had just hit. That driver was not seriously hurt. Police say officers tried to get the suspect to put down his weapon but he wouldnt, and thats when three officers fired shots, killing the suspect. Were told no officers were injured. Police on the peninsula are trying to track down the thieves who broke into nearly 20 cars in just one night. The burglaries happened thursday night along a string of streets in belmont. Devin feeley shows us why many of those cars were specifically targeted. Reporter its a feeling of violation. It was a terrible, terrible feeling. Reporter christopher knows all too well what people in this belmont neighborhood are feeling after thieves broke into 19 cars overnight thursday stealing expensive Electronic Items like laptops. Reporter according to police, many of the cars were left unlocked, easy targets for thieves who appear to have made their way through the neighborhood and frustrated neighbors say it isnt the first time it happened. Really angry because we were kind of feeling unlucky. You dont feel like your car is going to be robbed. You are like, really . That really sucks. Reporter James Thompson was lucky this time, but says his fathers car has been broken into twice. Neighbors would like to see increased patrols in the area but know there is one simple thing they can do to put the brakes on the breakins. Lock your car and have your alarm on. Police sawed off five catalytic converters. Our police have seen waves of this kind of crime before usually targeting cars parked for entire days by commuters. Thieves can take the converters quickly using batteryoperated saws and then they sell or convert them into scrap metals. Oaklands mayor says the city faces a 32 million shortfall. A new twoyear budget includes proposals to fill in the gaps. Its already provoking some negative reaction. Reporter the mayors budget is out and already plenty of dissatisfaction. It was a bait and switch by the mayor. Reporter the mayor is taking heat for diverting 6 million of soda tax. Council woman Annie Campbell washington says on her facebook it is outrageous. City leaders have promised the voters the money would be used for health programs. We have such gross incompetence in the city. We dont want the voters to think we lie. Its important to remember this is the mayors proposal. Reporter another says the mayor wants to use the soda tax money for libraries and parks and he supports it. It will be used to support children and family activities. Reporter the mayors budget addresses hiring 12 fire inspectors. Thats gross mismanagement. They are not going to fires every five minutes in the city. They have plenty of time on their hands. Reporter the twoyear Budget Proposal closes a 32 million budget deficit and it also directs money to fix potholes and help create more affordable housing. Why dont we just accept the truth and create homeless villages . Reporter the city will have been budget meetings in the coming days to get public input. The city council will vote by june 30. The city blames the 32 million deficit on Rising Health care and pension costs. A memorial day for the nine victims who died in an East Palo Alto fire 20 years ago this week. It remains the largest unsolved homicide case in san mateo county. Most of the victims were children. Firefighters reached the home in minutes on the morning of april 26, 1997, but when they got there they found security bars on every window and the garage door nailed shut. Finally they smashed a window to get in. Just four people were rescued from the fire. We spoke with one survivor at the memorial today. It dont really get easier because i think about them every single day. I mean, but im like i said, god blessed me because im still here. Investigators say somebody dumped gasoline on the cars parked near the home and set them on fire. 20 years later they still dont know who did it or why. An east Bay Elementary School is on shaky ground. The School District says the building is not safe and needs to close. About 500 students attend the school. Their parents packed a Board Meeting last night to urge the district to keep it open. [ singing ] they learned this week the soil beneath the school would essentially liquefy during an earthquake. School Officials Say its too expensive to fix and it isnt safe for students to return in the fall. They will likely be reassigned to other schools. Parents say not if they can help it. I have been here four years. So i want to keep going to this school and its great. The board will vote may 23rd on what to do.
