at 6:00. kpix's suzy steimel went to find out if there were plans to repair this highway. this is between nevada and spring streets, crews spent most of the day patching up the area, removing near by brush. officials have not said when the lanes will reopen. this latest storm is also dumping hail on parts of the bay area. check this out. large enough but you can see it bouncing in >> a storm cloud opened up and sent hail raining down on novato. the pea sized hail was not large enough to do any damage but you can see it bouncing. a mixture of rain and hail came pouring down this afternoon. enough to cover the hood of this car. and a hail sighting at sfo. a kpix viewer sent us this video of snow in an airport parking lot. and we are not in the clear just yet. >> yeah let's check in with chief meteorologist paul diano now. >> more unstable air continues to fire off showers with the possibility of small hail and definitely heavier rainfall. one hopping over the santa cruz mountain is leaving half-moon bay. also los altos. heads up you can see pockets of hail and heavy rainfall in san rafael, millvalely and novato. we've seen a couple of thunder strikes just southeast of san jose. and the snow level is down to 3,000 feet. look at the rain totals for the month of january. almost 8-inches of rain in concord, more than half of that in san francisco. double digits in napa and 19- inches of rain in santa rosa. one flood warning remains, central sonoma county west creek. and the advisory lasts seven more hours until 3:00 tomorrow morning. when did we finally get a break. we'll talk about when it will arrive and how long it's going to stick around. the wet weather to blame for this 10-foot wide sink hole that opened up this morning. take a look at this one. it's in the middle of a southbound lane just north of broadway terrace in oakland. kpix5's john ramos explains how the sink hole got its own name. >> commuters lost a lane early this morning when the pothole opened up in the roadway. chp arrived at the scene around 5:20 a.m. >> we did have three vehicles that had flat tires. >> reporter: the chp tweeted an unusually light hearted message announcing the birth of a sink hole named steve. perhaps it was an attempt at social media humor but that quickly paled when caltranss engineers arrived on scene. >> there's a pipe underneath that goes up and past the broadway terrance exit. >> reporter: siphoning out a cavity below the pavement. caltrans workers discovered it to be about 8 feet wide, 10 feet long and 10 feet deep. any vehicle driving over it could have easily met with tragic results. suddenly steve was no laughing matter. >> this could have been a very tragic situation. so we're glad that people called it in as quickly as they did and we're able to fix it fast. >> reporter: contractors say they've yet to dig down to find the pipe that caused the problem. no one knows how long until it's repaired but one thing is certain, steve may that's where they found the bodies. residents are being evacuated from the building as a precaution. and officers have blocked off the entire area to traffic. and a hazmat team has also been called to in the united states. but now the question, what's next? kpix5's jessica torrez investigates. >> reporter: now organizers say this is just the beginning. they want to keep up the momentum. >> online women's march participants are tweeting pictures of postcards they're sending to senators with the hash tag why i march. it's the first of what organizers are calling 10 actions in 100 days. on the women's march website there's even a template. this movement won't just go away. like occupy wall street did. because she says, it's rooted in existing organizations. >> this took its start on saturday. we are going to continue to do it. this has had so much progress already and we will continue. it's not just in oakland, every single person that marched also gave $10 to a women and girl's organization. we had $60,000 marchers that would be $600,000. >> reporter: today she's been seeing more support for alliance for young girls. her organization's biggest grant comes from the federal government. dollars she's not sure will continue to flow in under the new administration. >> i think the idea of the women's march was really to compel the new administration to continue to fund women's work and continue to support progirl and prowomen's policies. part of the power of coming together is our message is better heard. >> so what's next after the postcards to your senator? the women's march organizers say they will roll out each action every 10 days. jessica torrez, kpix5. good news for both former president george h.w. bush and former first lady barbara bush. president bush is recovering well from pneumonia. the family spokesperson tweeted this photo from this afternoon. today doctors moved the former president out of the intensive care unit. he could be released as early as this coming weekend. mrs.bush who was treated for bronchitis was released this morning. some of those affected will be reassigned. the cuts come as a new main hospital is close to completion and is set to open next year. check your fridge, the sierra nevada brewing company is recalling some of its beer. the company says that some of the glass could break off into the bottle. the recall reporter: luckily no, but 10 cars are underneath this mess with varying degrees of damage. to this jeep that is flattened. it owner was inside the restaurant at the time of the crash where there was a 70 birthday party in full swing. >> there's a ton of cars in this parking lot and no one was in their cars. everybody was super fortunate. atlas tree service is now trying to clear up the brush before bringing in heavy equipment for the rest. >> and then see how we're going to get all of this out of here with a crane. >> reporter: there's certainly the smell of eucalyptus here in the air in morning a few people had to dig their cars out of snow drifts. >> we haven't seen snow like this in years. so it's shocking to all of us around here like wow look at all this snow. so, but we love it. >> yeah, snow is also creating problems for schools. in the area. some of them were forced to shut down again today. a live look at the radar. how much rain we've received in january compared to look at the percentage of normal for the month of january. san francisco, nearly triple your average rainfall. 333% of normal in the north bay. and inland places like livermore and concord, 437% of normal. snowfall in the sierra we just had a story on that. low elevation snow 3,000 feet and higher. another four to 8-inches of snow in the sierra. the western sloping coming up today and tomorrow: chilly outside. upper 40s low 60s. chilly tonight, widespread 30s including freemont and vallejo. why is all this happening? because the low moved in yesterday and that low will finally move out tomorrow. the showers are finished. clouds begin to clear out lunchtime tomorrow. afternoon sunshine, we're dry tuesday and wednesday and a tiny chance of a couple of showers tuesday morning. that's the only chance of rain after tomorrow for the entire seven day forecast. big ridge of high pressure builds in for the weekend. storm track heading to the north. we will see hello to the 60s for the first time this month. scattered heavy showers some small hail possible this evening. mainly dry for the rest of the week. except for a couple of north bay showers early thursday. your highs tomorrow, san rafael 50. napa 54. and here is your extended forecast. we're dry for most of tuesday all of wednesday. some north bay showers on thursday. then look at the change, a change we sorely need.
