gunshots. scary to be so close to a shooting. >> reporter: back here live from chopper 5, the situation as we know it has ended. in terms of an active shooter, police are up on top of that construction roof right now gathering evidence checking out reports, looking at 911 calls to see if there was the possibility of a second shooter. we can't confirm that. as we know it right now, there was one individual, got up on a construction elevator just about in the middle of your screen there. you can see an orange cage toward the bottom of your screen. that's where he was perched on top of. what he was shooting at, who he was shooting at, is unknown at this point. police returned fire at some point after getting a 911 call and that suspect is now motionless on top. and police have secured the area. veronica, allen, that's about what we know right now. obviously, we're keeping an eye on a developing situation. as soon as we get any new information, we'll let you know. >> thank you. also tonight, a massive trail of mangled metal. a suspect's wild escape turns into a demolition derby on an east bay street. the driver smashed into nine cars shearing the roof off of his own vehicle. crews had to use power tools to get the man out of his crushed car. it started with a traffic stop in san pablo and ended on 29th street in richmond. kpix 5's da lin live with that path of destruction. da. reporter: yeah, allen. it was a trail of destruction on this block here where police just reopened this not too long ago. tow trucks have removed some of the cars but as you said, the suspect's car smashed into nine cars, destroyed a fence and injured two people including himself. police say they are very lucky no one was killed in this. the suspect apparently in pain his face bloodied. [ applause ] >> reporter: neighbors applauding in relief. the man who smashed into nine cars is in custody. this is what's left of his car. >> i have no idea how he managed to survive that. that was a crazy crash. >> reporter: san pablo police tried to stop the nissan sedan for a traffic violation near the san pablo casino. when the suspect sped up, officers chased him. but when the suspect drove fast into a residential enabled, the officers ended the chase. police say about one minute after they ended the chase, the suspect hit a woman driving this bmw. the impact spun the bmw around. he then hit eight other parked cars and somehow came to a stop on the sidewalk. a neighbor ran to check the suspect. >> all you could see was blood on his face. i asked him if he was okay, what was going on? i told him that was police was coming. as soon as i mentioned the cops he started just freaking out. >> reporter: rudy says the suspect tried to leave but he was trapped driver's seat because the car was smashed up. firefighters used the "jaws of life" to free him. some of the parked cars are totaled. but police say with kids out of school on holiday they're very lucky. >> just imagine that on the sidewalk somebody walking on a sidewalk where kids are playing crossing the street, that could have been devastating. >> reporter: once that suspect recovers, he will be booked and charged. now, witnesses say police actually recovered a handgun from that vehicle. police say because it's an ongoing investigation, they will not confirm nor deny that they found anything within that vehicle. live in richmond, da lin, kpix 5. we just learned about 90 minutes ago that two recent freeway shootings in the east bay are connected. someone shot at a car overnight on i-80 near pinole killing the driver and injuring his female passenger. the california highway patrol says the car was headed eastbound. another car pulled alongside near pinole valley road and a gunman old fire. the other shooting happened last monday, also on i-80. a car pulled alongside a hyundai near san pablo dam road and someone opened fire injuring the driver. the hyundai ended up on the side of the road but the driver survived. chp investigators say in both cases, evidence indicates the victims were targeted. our crews are interviewing the chp right now. we are going to have more on this investigation coming up at 6:00. san jose police say they opened fire on a home invasion suspect when he pointed an assault rifle at them. they say 36-year-old shannon wong was wearing full military clothing when he tried to break in a home on batista place around 1 a.m. they say that when they confronted him, he raised the rifle and pointed it at them. that's when one officer opened fire. the gunfire left a huge bullet hole in the side of the house. wong was not hit. he later surrendered peacefully. a neighbor who didn't want to be identified said he woke up to the sound of shouting. >> the officers were, you know, firmly ordering this individual to drop your weapons and please comply -- you know, comply with us and, um, after several attempts -- and, you know, i didn't hear any shots because i was probably so groggy, but, um, you know, i saw that the individual just got down on the ground. >> a neighbor took this photo for us and there was also the military gear the suspect was wearing. officers did recover a loaded ar-15 assault type rifle and loaded handgun. the raiders just threw a major block at oakland's bid to keep them in town. they have appointed disney ceo bob iger to help build a new stadium near los angeles all this as the oakland mayor was making her pitch to nfl brass in new york. phil matier is live at raiders headquarters. what do you know? >> reporter: libby schaaf the oakland mayor went back to new york to make a pitch for the team to stay here but it looks like she might be the victim of what may be known as the mickey mouse play. here's the story. >> reporter: the raider nation has a new star player, but the locals like coliseum board member chris dobbins are not at all happy about it. >> very upsetting. >> reporter: dobbins, the entrance of disney's ceo bob iger to head up the team's bid to build a joint stadium with the chargers in los angeles could once again mean oakland is left in the dust. in typical raiders style the announcement came the same day as oakland mayor libby schaaf was back in new york arguing for the team to stay. >> what we have to sell now is an incredible market. >> reporter: this must put the mayor in a terrible spot back in new york. >> right. she is there with the city council, mayor lee, fighting to keep the raiders in oakland. >> reporter: for many raiders fans it's the latest indication that the team is talking out of both sides of its mouth saying they want to stay but making every move they can to leave. >> and you choose to take the team there and try to return here again, you're probably going to come back it a no trespassing sign. >> reporter: team owner mark davis says the plans to build the stadium in oakland have gone nowhere. >> are we talking to a megadeveloper to help get this going? >> we have talked to three megadevelopers to get this going. >> it's been clear that we won't directly subsidize stadium construction. >> reporter: and let's not forget the money still owed on the last raider deal. >> the fans support them. the city and county are continuing to pay the $10 million a year to keep them there. can you trust the guy? >> well, i like to think i can trust him but now when he's, you know, when he is saying one thing but doing something else with his money -- >> reporter: and at 6:00 we'll be back with the latest from new york and also what the teams and the mayors of the southern cities that might benefit from this play have to say. phil matier, kpix 5. >> mayor schaaf released a statement this afternoon saying, we were very grateful and excited to have the opportunity to make oakland's case to the nfl. i felt it was a positive discussion and that we were well received by the raiders leadership and the other nfl owners. we remain committed to responsibly keeping as many of our sports teams as possible. one of the most dangerous intersections in san francisco is getting safer. road crews were out paving add bay and buchanan streets. improvements will include a stop sign and new lane configurations to try to reduce speed through that area. this is where a suspected drunk driver struck two boys last week. they were crossing the street on the way to school. investigators say the driver went around a stopped truck and hit the boys. the driver was arrested and faces four felony charges, pled not guilty and is due in court in january. cabbies are back to work in san jose but they are not happy that the city council last night unanimously approved relaxed regulation for rideshare drivers. unlike the cabbies, rideshare drivers will not have to submit to fingerprinting. instead, there will be random safety audits of 1% of the drivers. it's a unique place to adopt a cat but tonight, reports of kittens at this cat cafe getting sick with a deadly disease. now workers think they know the source. >> she blazed a trail for topless dancers. tonight remembering the career of an iconic bay area entertainer. >> mobile gunfire between police and at least one gunman near the st. luke's hospital, that's a construction site you're looking at right now from chopper 5. as we know it, a gunman was perched on top of that construction elevator. you can see it's a box-like device on the bottom of that rail. it's orange. he was perched up there with at least one weapo earlier this afternoon and on the 11th floor was taking shots. police responded and gunfire was exchanged between san francisco police and the gunman. police then sent a tactical unit up on top of the roof. and they, um, threw flash-bang grenades down to where that suspect was perched. and that suspect was "neutralized." we don't know if police gunfire ended his life or whether, um, he was, um, he took his own life. we're just not sure right now. um, and the extent of his injuries, we're not sure. but we're checking on those things right now. as we know it, nobody else was hurt. a lot of people were locked inside the hospital while the firing was going on. that's what we know right now and we'll report back as we learn more. guys? >> thank you, ken. people all over the bay area paid tribute to veterans and their service to the country. ♪ o say can you see >> in the south bay today plaza de cesar chavez set the scene for the parade honoring veterans. a new plan aims to end homelessness among veterans in santa clara county. the campaign is called "all the way home." its goal is to find homes for the 700 homeless veterans in the county. >> we're here to make a collective commitment together that by the 100th anniversary of veterans day in 2018, we will end veterans homelessness in this valley. >> many homeless vets already have housing vouchers but can't find an opening. a key component of the all the way home campaign is a $5 million fund to inspire landlords to renovate their properties and accept the vouchers. president obama visited the tomb of the unknown soldier in arlington, virginia today. the commander-in-chief placed a wreath in honor of veterans day. during a ceremony at arlington national cemetery, the president asked the nation to keep vets in their thoughts. >> whether you serve proudly in the army, navy, air force, marines or coast guard, you are part of an unbroken chain of patriots who have served this country with honor through the life of our nation. >> to ensure the veterans they would receive the care and benefits they have earned. it's a place to drink tea and meet a furry friend. tonight trouble at this bay area cat cafe. kittens hit by a deadly disease. ,, mike sugerman finds out what's going on. reporter: at kit-tea you come drink tea and play with cats just like it sounds. maybe adopt one you like, maybe just play with one for a time. relax. but there's a sad tale to tell here too. >> we just had a little bit of bad luck a lot of bad luck. >> reporter: courtney is the owner of kit-tea. three of the kittens that have been adopted here have come down with a fatal disease, two have died, the other will. it's called fip and it's terminal. >> they live here with us until they find their forever homes so it's heartbreaking when, you know, something like this happens. >> reporter: fip is classified as a communicable disease. are the other cats and kittens here at risk of getting this killer? >> is there something inherit about kit-tea? no. i would probably trace it back to the shelters where they came from. >> reporter: jennifer scarlet of san francisco's spca says it's so rare and random she wouldn't tell people not to adopt from them. fip hit her shelter before, too. it depends on the genetics of the cat. >> it's another complicating factor there's no good screening test so it hits the most susceptibles the kittens from a virus that's everywhere in shelters and cateries and only a few will have the disease. >> it is what it is and there's nothing we can do about it. it's not like spreading like wildfire. >> reporter: no one knows why some get it and some cats don't but scientists do know when they do get it, they will die. it is just a sad tale to tell. mike sugerman, kpix 5. >> they are working with uc- davis to develop a screening test but so far there is none. she was known as a topless trailblazer. legendary san francisco burlesque performer carol doda died. friends confirm to kpix 5 that she died at st. luke's hospital on monday after a long illness. carol doda changed the bar scene in 1964. she began dancing topless at the condor club. she later worked as a bay area tv host and owned a lingerie boutique. she was 78. the city of palo alto is considering a plan to raise the minimum age to purchase tobacco to 21. the controversial change is supported by two city councilmen. santa clara county recently passed an ordinance raising the legal age to 21 in unincorporated areas. a similar recommendation to include ecigarettes in the existing ban is expected to be adopted. we are counting down to super bowl 50 and there are just 87 days to go until kickoff at levi's stadium. you can now buy tickets to the nfl experience for super bowl 50. tickets went on sale today. fans can run through real nfl drills, buy merchandise, meet players. that park opens in january at san francisco's moscone center. tickets are $35 for adults, 20 bucks for children, 12 years old or younger. the super bowl 50 host committee gave an update today on where things stan as the big game approaches. it officially put tickets on sale for the media night at the s.a.p. center in san jose. it used to happen on the tuesday before super bowl. there are only 7500 seats available. >> it's now in prime time. kids can come. they don't have to worry about skipping school and being able to see their favorite players. they will be able to dial in on headsets and listen to the interviews. >> tickets for that are available through the official super bowl website. and steven colbert has scored a prime spot in the super bowl line-up. cbs announcing today "the late show" will air immediately following the game and you will be able to watch super bowl 50 and "the late show" february 7th right here on kpix 5. meteorologist paul deanno is live in yountville where the super bowl 50 tour is -- the trophies are there in the background. >> reporter: they are kept with very, very, very gentle care. each trophy is made by tiffany. they are being put away right now. the folks who put them away have to wear special gloves. each trophy goes into a blue tiffany bag and put in its own individual case. we have advisory. your specific lows, santa rosa down to 36. napa 36 degrees. vallejo you'll hit the 30s, as well. 40 in san jose. fremont 41. and san francisco 48 degrees. the high pressure giving us that north-to-south wind that canadian air. that's going to hang out for a couple more days. temperatures will moderate a degree or two each day but the general theme will be mild days and chilly nights until sunday and sunday is when we have our next chance of rain moving in so we are clear tonight, some of you in the north bay dealt with fog this morning. you may once again tomorrow morning so watch out for that and if you hit the frost in the same spot roads could be slippery in santa rosa. sunny and mild thursday through saturday with our next rain chance moving in sunday and right now, it looks like that rainfall will be mainly sunday morning, clearing out by the afternoon. high temperatures tomorrow, 65 for concord. 68 in napa. san francisco 63. san jose 65. and pacifica, 60 degrees. and we are looking at our extended forecast calling for temperatures to moderate on friday. some of you inland will hit the low 70s. saturday we'll see a slight increase in cloud cover in the afternoon. sunday morning is mainly when that rain will move through which now means monday is looking dry. no rainfall on monday. but temperatures will stay rather chilly in the mid-60s inland and low 60s near the bay. guys, just in case you're curious, because most of us have not held a super bowl trophy, once again made by tiffany, 22 inches long and 7 pounds. which means just kind of like a news in san francisco. the shooting happening at st. luke's hospital. chopper 5 over the scene right now. it looks like one suspect has been shot and killed by police. >> this is happening at the part of the hospital that's under construction near cesar chavez in valencia. our mark kelly is on scene. mark, we're watching live pictures from chopper 5 as you describe for us, what's going on now? >> reporter: ken, of course this is all very preliminary information at this point. this is all still coming in. but there was a report of an active shooter just about an hour ago outside st. luke's hospital here and you can see that video what's going on from these live pictures of chopper 5 right now. that shooter is at this point believed to be dead. you can see in this video if we're able to put that up, video of of officers also using a flash-bang before they go in to check on the suspect. the hospital has been on lockdown even at this point even though we do know that that suspect at this point is believed to be dead. the hospital is still on lockdown. so this all started about an hour ago. officers responded here after reports there was a man with a long rifle standing on top of a orange tower sort of an elevator shaft is how it was described. the man's outfit sounded as if he was wearing a construction worker's uniform described as wearing a black hat with a white outfit possibly overalls but some sort of white uniform and near this construction zone. as you mentioned, they have been working on a construction project here at st. luke's for the past year now. as far as traffic, of course, avoid this area at all costs if you can tonight. traffic is at a standstill all around the hospital, several roads blocked off at this point. we are headed to the command post now
