New at 5 00, hundreds of seniors in burlingame need a new place to stay tonight after a fire broke out in their care facility. Chopper 5 was over the senior home on troutsdale drive this afternoon. A malfunctioning electrical box triggered a small fire around 9 30 a. M. No one was hurt but the fire knocked out power to the building. All 269 patients are now being temporarily relocated to other facilities until service is restored. There is no word yet on what caused a threealarm fire in a San FranciscoApartment Building this afternoon at 2 00 at second and geary in the inner richmond. Chopper 5 was over the building just as firefighters got control of the flames. But look at the back side of the building. Those are the back stairs of a threestory building. They are gone. Fire crews also checked for smoke damage in adjacent homes. Traffic troubles to report now on both ends of the bay area. Up in Solano County westbound 37 is just now reopening after a big rig hauling hay caught fire around 6 45 a. M. The flames so intense, the roadbed was damaged. Heres a live look right now from chopper 5. The road was closed in both directions for a while to make those repairs. But most lanes have now reopened. And in the east bay, a twisted mass of metal is all thats left of a double trailer big rig. It crashed through the concrete divider on 680 and burst into flames. It brought the morning commute to a standstill in walnut creek. Chunks of concrete flew in all directions but no one was hurt. Lisa chan talked to commuters stuck in the mess. It was a mess. I have never seen anything like it. Its the worst traffic i have ever seen on that road. Reporter he was one of the many people stuck in gridlocked traffic this morning on 680 in walnut creek. His usual 10minute drive to his sons school took 45 minutes. I called the school and they said there would be no tardies today because everybody is going to be late. Reporter at 6 a. M. The chp says the driver of a big rig with dual trailers filled with 60,000 pounds of gravel had a tire blow out on 680 north at main and walnut creek. The driver swerved and hit the center concrete barrier multiple times. The truck then drove on top of the barrier which created a spark and erupted the fuel tanks. It became engulfed in flames. During the course of the collision, the concrete actually went over into the southbound lanes of traffic and caused about 10 vehicles to be involved with a collision with the concrete. Reporter no one was seriously injured including the driver of the big rig. In all, only 4 people had minor injuries. We were very thankful and lucky especially with it being dark earlymorning hours. You know, its one of those things where you cant really predict whats going to happen, but when it does, um, luckily, drivers were paying attention. Reporter caltrans quickly swept all the lanes made repairs to the concrete barrier and the gravel had to be removed from the big rig to tow it. All that work meant a morning of bumpertobumper traffic. It took Diane Thompson two hours to get to danville from walnut creek. Its the worst i have experienced. In palo alto, crews continue their work on a broken water main at a very busy intersection. The break happened this morning at Hillview Avenue and hanover street. Its right near Hewlett Packards corporate offices. We are told the intersection will likely remain closed through the evening commute. And this sinkhole in union city is still growing. Look at the size of it. Its gone from about 6 feet by 6 feet to one thats 35 by 55 feet. Not clear what caused the water main break. Water service is back on in the area. But the work is going to continue for several more days. Westbound lanes on alvarado boulevard at fair ranch is closed. For now theres one eastbound lane available.
