Daniel dewitt was schizophrenic and had stopped taking his medication. Cukor called a nonemergency number but police were only answering high priority calls because they were busy with an occupy protest. 15 minutes later, cukor was bludgeoned with a garden pot. The 67yearold died from his injuries. His widow says his death was entirely preventable. My husband was an extraordinary man and it took extraordinary failure of so many systems, things must change and i somehow want to begin to effect that change to think that i can do anything alone is ridiculous. Dewitt was a star player at alameda high. His lawyer says his parents tried everything they could to get their son help for his illness. He was put in mental hospitals nine times before the murder. But released after just a couple of days of treatment. Dewitt was found incompetent to stand trial. He pleaded no contest to murder by reason of insanity. The cukor family settled a wrongful death lawsuit with the city of berkeley last year. The city promised improved communication with dispatchers and emergency callers. Liz . Veronica, thank you.
