>> reporter: police say the suspects have the stoneel stolen goods in their -- stolen goods in share van. they made their escape. but one person in this parking lot caught them in the act knew what they looked like and called police. it was a high-priced theft that four suspected criminals nearly got away with and they hit the jackpot either by coincidence or knowing exactly what they were able to get their hands on. san jose police say these four men were at the westfield oakridge mall tuesday but not to go inside the mall. their operations took place outside. >> it's crazy. >> reporter: as shoppers pass them by the men broke into a fedex truck before the driver could unload the goods and then were allegedly able to load a van with $160,000 word of apple products. investigators say the men drove off but little did they know someone saw them breaking into the truck and called police. officers say the men tried to run but didn't get very far. >> they were caught. that's good. >> reporter: now inmates in san jose, but all are from l.a. the question is, what were they doing here? and did they make any other stops along the way? >> i mean, i feel like you have to have, like, a, like, no conscience to do that i mean pretty -- i don't know -- crazy. >> reporter: those suspects face a long list of charges including grand theft and resisting arrest for trying to run from police. live in san jose, maria medina, kpix 5. >> we reached out to fedex to see if apple got the products back or whether the driver followed protocol when leaving the truck alone. a spokesman says they don't release details about customers or security procedures. authorities found the wreckage of a small plane that crashed near livermore. the pilot was killed. the single-engine plane went down in the hills near interstate 580 not far from cows and palomares roads. -- cowing and palomares roads. the tail section of the plane is the only thing you can recognize. the pilot had taken off yesterday morning from concord on his way to reid-hillview airport in san jose. his family notified authorities when he didn't come home. he was the only one on board. the faa and the ntsb are taking over the accident investigation. a veteran santa clara police officer finds himself on the other side of the law. he is accused of shoplifting a smart watch. target workers at westgate center mall in san jose say they spotted kiet nguyen stealing the smart watch last saturday. investigators say that nguyen allegedly used sophisticated burglary tools to remove the locking device from the watch. he is now on paid leave. >> it's extremely disappointing. we all knew kiet. it's a blow to the department, the community and to the badge we wear. >> san jose police cited nguyen with two misdemeanors. he once worked in the financial crimes investigative unit as a detective sergeant and is now an officer. not clear why he was demoted. new outrage tonight over a science camp counselor accused of molesting a boy. it turns out the feds may have been watching him for some time while children were at risk. kpix 5's len ramirez says that news has parents outraged. len. >> reporter: well, parents here in this west san jose neighborhood want to know what the federal government knew, when it knew it and whether they waited too long to act. the saratoga science camp counselor known to kids as papa bear may have been under investigation in a child exploitation case five months before he was arrested for child pornography and molestation. according to a federal whistle- blower, the department of homeland security knew he had guard covarrubias was a -- edgar covarrubias was a threat to children yet still allowed him to have a work permit where he would be around children. >> it makes me extremely frustrate and angry that, you know, again i put my child in danger when they didn't take immediate precautions. >> reporter: parents of fifth graders at carlton avenue school are upset. earlier this year, their kids came into contact with covarrubias at the walden west science camp where they stayed for several days. none of the parents we talked to said their kids were victimized. but some think the federal agents might have used their children to make a case. >> they like to let things build up in order to get a case. but they could have prevented somebody from getting hurt and didn't the they just let it go. >> reporter: covarrubias is suspected of molesting a 10- year-old boy he met at camp in january when the whistle-blower says he was already under federal investigation. and he allegedly had 600 pornographic photos of children on his computer and phone when he was arrested may 7. >> i'm u.s. senator chuck grassley of iowa. >> reporter: now a u.s. senator is looking into the case calling the allegations deeply troubling. now, senator grassley has oversight of the homeland security department and his role as the chairman of the senate judiciary committee. the big question he wants to find out is whether or not federal authorities are properly vetting people like mr. covarrubias who are allowed to stay and work in this country under the "dream act." people who came here as children, um, and whether or not they have committed crimes. he wants to get to the bottom of it. reporting live in san jose, len ramirez, kpix 5. >> san jose state university police officer will not face charges for the death of a man who attacked another police officer near campus last year. the family of the man who was killed held a rally today in san jose. they would like the justice department to look into the death of antonio guzman lopez. >> i'm totally hurt, angry and devastated by the fact that they claim that what the officers did was justified. >> the investigation found that lopez was carrying a 1-foot- long blade and refused to follow orders to drop it. he had criminal history that included a past case of assaulting a police officer. a man accused of killing four people in a crash. prosecutors tried to get anthony imbronone's bail raised to a million dollars. a judge declined the request and kept it at $250,000. he did not enter a plea. prosecutors say he was drunk when he lost control of his mustang and crashed in gilroy 10 days ago. four passengers were killed when the car flipped and landed in a creek. a federal grand jury is reportedly investigating pg&e's relationship with state regulators. announcer: but don't wait! sleep train's ticket to tempur-pedic is ending soon. ♪ your ticket to a better night's sleep ♪ a moderate earthquake in southern nevada strong enough to the felt on the vegas strip. 5.3 magnitude quake happened just before noon about 100 miles north of las vegas. there have been several aftershocks. back here people are still buzzing about the 4.1 quake that jolted napa county last night. kpix 5's anne makovec reports from yountville where people felt the strongest shaking. >> reporter: there have been several aftershocks since that main quake 1.9 and a 1.6. but no major damage to report. >> felt a strong jolt. >> reporter: restaurant owner felipe was one of thousands of people who felt last night's 4.1 quake. >> the cat jumped. the dog jumped. and it was over. >> it just shook. it shook the whole house. >> reporter: everyone was instantly reminded of the north bay's last big quake a 6.0 centered near napa last august. >> with that first one i just -- i was holding on to my bed. >> reporter: that one caused around $1 billion in damage. >> that one we lost a couple of hundred bottles of wine. >> reporter: the two earthquakes were on different fault lines, last night's quake on the green valley fault, august on the west napa fault. they may have been related with exchanged stress. the mayor of yountville said crews checked the utilities and buildings in town after the quake. no damage to report. in yountville, anne makevoc, kpix 5. >> green valley fault line is also responsible for a swarm of quakes felt in concord earlier this month. the strongest one there was a 3.6. the chp has completed an investigation into a fatal collision between a fedex truck and a tour bus. on board were high school students on their way to a college visit. investigators put the blame on the fedex driver although they were not able to determine why he lost control and hit the bus head on. the crash happened last spring along i-5. 10 people died including five high school students. a close call for a team of firefighters who fell through the roof of a building as flames raged around them. this video shows the four working on top of an abandoned casino south of los angeles. then you can see their helmets as the roof gives way and they crash into the burning building. they fell from 30 feet. three of the firefighters were treated and released on scene. a fourth is being hospitalized but will be okay. all hands on deck to rescue wildlife hurt in that central california oil spill. the emergency operation giving some birds a second chance at life. >> and it's like tinder but for a job search. the secret way to meet a new employer without your boss knowing you're on the job hu bulldog: get a queen serta set for just $397. save up to $300 on tempur-pedic breeze. and get up to four years interest-free financing on the entire tempur-cloud collection! the memorial day sale ends monday. ♪ mattress discounters ♪ in -- in santa barbara federal officials have ordered the operators plains all american pipeline to shut down operations and focus on safety. over 100,000 gallons of crude oil spilled on the beach and into the ocean tuesday at refugio state beach. two state beaches will be closed this weekend. about 9,000 gallons have been contain. wildlife has suffered greatly. we got a look today at the emergency center set up to treat wildlife caught up in the spill. so far, five brown pelicans have been rescued. in the coming days more oil covered sea birds are expected to need care. >> federal authorities arrested two southern california men suspected of trying to support isis. one was about to board a flight to the middle east. 24-year-old nadir [ non-english language ] was at l.a.x. when the fbi arrested him. authorities found his friend at an anaheim gas station. fbi says the two men were trying to join isis. >> it's actually going to feel a little bit more like summer around here. it's going to be more warmer away from the water. 21 straight days with temperatures -- >> it has been chilly for the entire month. >> but now as we head toward the unofficial start of summer may actually feel like may around here at least by the end of the seven-day forecast. a peek outdoors this evening. it is another chilly and breezy day. oakland 61. that's it. san francisco 61. that's closer to average than 66 in livermore. the exception to the rule again would be the north bay santa rosa you're sitting at 70. and san jose only 65. your 14th consecutive day not hitting 70 degrees in san jose. weather watchers onshore flow in redwood city 62 and cloudy one spot the 70s today in the north bay. dave giving us sunshine, 71 degrees and this beautiful picture from the backyard looking nice in napa on a friday evening heading into the holiday. if you are heading up toward the sierra there are numerous showers and thunderstorms there. and paralleling i-5 in the mountains to the west, to the west of redding and mount shasta and lake shasta. there are more showers and thunderstorms there. that's wonderful news. we'll take rain anywhere in california and once again it is raining in the higher elevations. oakland tonight 54. vallejo 54. san jose 53 degrees. sunrise very early, 5:54. lots going on this weekend. the eastlake music festival tomorrow only, lake merritt, a little milder, a little sunnier. mid-60s. the pattern is changing. it's going to take about four or five days to get there but we are not going to be stuck in the say weather pattern for the next week. look at all the mountain thunderstorms once again blossoming over the whole western third of the country as close as two hours to our north. high pressure beginning to build in. the first thing it will do is turn our winds north and west. still stormy this weekend in the sierra. if you are going hiking bring the rain gear but toward memorial day and much of next week, that ridge wins, that low pressure area pushes off to the east, and we are trending warmer and sunnier next week. some of you inland may hit 80s. couple of areas of drizzle overnight. another cloudy start tomorrow. but we'll trend warmer starting sunday and monday. concord back to the 70s tomorrow. first time in a while. san jose still the 60s for you. redwood city 67. san ramon 67 tomorrow. benicia though hit 70. 63 in san francisco. santa rosa 75. and cloverdale you will hit the 80s as soon as tomorrow. notice a gradual warming trend by the middle of next week, back to the low 80s inland. and hanging out around 70 degrees near the bay. so it has been a long time since we have been "normal." we'll get there by the middle of next week. >> all right. not too bad. not too shabby. >> pretty good stuff. thanks, paul. the drought will likely have some sort of effect on the memorial day plans. crews are warning swimmers and boaters, don't be fooled by low water levels. the currents can still be strong enough to sweep someone off his feet. for boaters there are plenty of hazards that include everything from rocks, logs to sandbars. they served our country and now the city of san francisco wants to pay them back. the city plans to build a housing complex for homeless veterans and low-income families. the project was unveiled today and will go on 3rd street in the mission bay neighborhood. construction is supposed to start next year and people will be able to move in by 2018. one carjacker messed with the wrong guy. how he ended a georgia man turned the tables on a would-be carjacker. the entire incident was caught on video. take a look. >> you made a mistake.
