there is a protest tonight, those protestors will not be getting on those freeways. live in oakland, i'm da lin, kpix 5. >> police faced off with protestors in st. louis today when they tried to storm city hall. [ screaming ] >> police were able to hold off most of the group before locking down the building. more than 100 additional officers were called in. three people were arrested. cbs reporter kris van cleave is live in ferguson. there was major cleaning up there today. >> reporter: good evening, liz. yeah. it really is a tale of two cities when you're talking about ferguson. there's ferguson at night where you have seen two nights now of violent demonstrations and very high security. during the day, completely different story. it is calm. even friendly and welcoming. kindness came from small hands in ferguson wednesday. leah bailey and her family are helping clean up the damage left from a second night of violent demonstrations after a grand jury decided not to indict police officer darren wilson in the shooting death of michael brown. >> if we want to see positive change here, then we need to be part of it. >> reporter: criminals set off explosives at this car repair shop last night. today it's back open for business. its smashed out windows replaced with plywood. jim is the store's manager. >> during the day this is a city you would like to have lunch in. at night you don't want anywhere near here. i mean, it's -- it's -- it's a jekyll and hyde kind of thing. >> reporter: there is still a strong police presence here during the day but nothing like the small army of officers and national guard that we saw during the demonstrations tuesday night. the officer who killed the 18- year-old broke his silence this week and said he was forced to shoot. but on "cbs this morning," the parents of michael brown said wilson had a choice and did what he wanted to do. >> in his statement he said he would do it again. >> his conscience is clear? how could your conscience be clear after killing someone even if it's a accidental death. >> reporter: they may pursue a lawsuit and the justice department is investigating. now, missouri's governor today thanked police and the national guard for their efforts saying the additional troops last night helped. still 45 people were arrested in ferguson during the demonstrations. >> looks like it's cold outside now tonight and snowing in the background there, kris. are you hearing any word of protests there tonight? >> reporter: there are some demonstrators out just minutes ago we drove through downtown. the national guard standing behind barricades with full-on riot gear and shields right around the ferguson police department like we've seen. the difference just dozens of demonstrators as opposed to hundreds last night and the thousands monday night. we think the weather is a big factor. it's been snowing most of the day now. it's a mix of snow and sleet not to mention it is the night before thanksgiving. so so far, we have seen small numbers of people. but, of course, that could change at any time. liz? >> hopefully most of those folks want to go home. kris van cleave live in ferguson, thank you. in los angeles protestors were out early stopping the morning rush hour traffic. here they are standing in front of cars their hands up. it's the 101 just east of downtown l.a. and traffic was backed up for miles as police and highway patrol tried to get those protestors off the freeway. nine of them were arrested. [ screaming ] >> in minneapolis this drive was trying to get away from protestors when he ran down a 16-year-old girl. people quickly surrounded the car and started punching the windows. the driver was able to escape the crowd and is cooperating with police. the girl was treated for minor injuries. here in the bay area, people are on the move. they are heading out of town for the holiday. let's take a look at what drivers are dealing with. this is i-580 in dublin. a packed freeway right now. things are moving slowly but they are smooth at any rate. hey, let's look at 880 in oakland. lights are on, we got a ribbon of red one way, the ribbon of white the other a steady stream of traffic on that freeway. kpix 5's mike sugerman is in mobile5 right in the thick of it. you're not in a hurry, are you, mike? >> reporter: well, i'm not but look at this! let's go to the -- i'm on highway 80 on the road to tahoe, and all of a sudden it opened up! just before you came to me. it's great! we took, um, 16.9 miles in the last 45 minutes. we left albany at quarter after 4:00. we are coming up to the carquinez bridge. this is fantastic! but it was about 25 miles an hour before this. i'm one of 50 million americans on the road today. you know, earlier today i went to the oakland airport where the other half lives. it was flying. the other 10% because 90% are driving. and here's what they can look forward to for their thanksgiving day. >> thanksgiving is in martinez california except the [ indiscernible ] yuba city at my brother's. >> we're from orange county. >> reporter: where are you going for thanksgiving? >> we're going to marin county. >> reporter: where are you coming from? >> florida. >> reporter: wow! >> we're going up to her brother's house out in i think it's brentwood out there. >> reporter: you like her brother? >> yeah. [ laughter ] >> he does. >> reporter: sitting around the table, who is the one that's going to pick the first fight, do you think? >> my brother, um, probably my brother jack. [ laughter ] >> going to be a nice day. >> reporter: how do you guarantee that? >> i keep my mouth shut. >> we are, um, spending thanksgiving in a hotel in union square. >> reporter: no family, no turkey? >> not this year. >> reporter: wow. i want to be you. [ laughter ] >> reporter: all right. well, the road is opened up here on the carquinez bridge. and if you are going to tahoe, you might make it in time for, i don't know, late dinner. it's bad on 80 on 880, on 580. but if you are going west -- eastbound on 80, you're in fat city! on the carquinez bridge, moving! mike sugerman, combination. >> for definitely more stressful for travelers headed to the east coast. a major winter storm is causing chaos at the airport. the washington-to-boston corridor is getting slammed with rain and snow. more than 550 flights have been canceled. sfo says travelers headed to boston, newark and new york can see up to three-hour delays. weather isn't an issue now in the bay area but meteorologist paul deanno says it could impact your trip home. >> talk to me on saturday and sunday. look a whole lot different on the radar and frankly i am thrilled. it's exactly the kind of storm we have needed to put a sizable dent in the drought. it's not here yet. if you are traveling this evening or tomorrow morning, the weather won't be an impediment. hi-def doppler radar is dry. but let me show you what's offshore. about 650 miles away a big area of low pressure that will bring us significant rainfall. i have upped my predicted rainfall totals so we'll have that coming up in 10 minutes. >> thank you. rescuers couldn't believe it when a 4-year-old boy survived a cliffside plunge. exclusive new video of his recovery. the small milestone today in the hospital and the challenge his family didn't see coming. >> cleaning out before the black friday crowds. smash-and-grab at a high-end bay area boutique. >> you want to see characters like your sister in the movies? >> yes. >> a bay area girl stands up to fight for her little sister. find her a new hero. the fight she is taking all the way to the steps of the big movie studio. ,,,,,, from a cliff. tonight we can show you the progress a 4-year-old boy is making after he survived a fall in a cliff. sebastien johnson slipped a couple of weeks ago while on a hike with his family at bodega bay. the fact that he is alive surprised rescuers. kpix 5's ryan takeo reports. >> reporter: walking into his hospital room, you can tell 4- year-old sebastien johnson's right eye is still swollen but his mom says he is looking better every day. the family is thankful they can share simple moments. >> he could have died. and he didn't thank god. >> reporter: sebastien fell 230 feet down a cliff near bodega bay three weeks ago. he slipped while throwing rocks into the ocean. >> the hard part is not being able to help him with the pain just standing aside and seeing him hurt so much. it causes me hurt. >> reporter: that hurt is slowly fading as sebastien heals. the mother says every day brings a mini milestone at oakland children's hospital. today sebastien raised his leg on command. >> watch her jump on the chair. >> reporter: as the recovery continues, the family is now dealing with their next shock. they just got a $17,000 ambulance bill. they are trying to raise money for his recovery from the "go fund me" account. >> with help we are doing it. >> reporter: this is only the beginning of a long tough road but despite the pain and struggle, she now has a reason to appreciate this thanksgiving like never before. >> very thankful for the hort, for the rescuers, for sebastien's life, for the hospital. >> reporter: sebastien's mom says he is so strong because of his mindset. he thinks he is a superhero. ryan takeo, kpix 5. >> he is. sebastien is going to spend at least another month in the hospital before he gets to head home. other bay area headlines. a warning tonight on the cal campus after a student was reportedly assaulted in her dorm hall. uc-berkeley police say the suspect tailgated the woman, walking in the door behind her. he then grabbed her in a stairwell and then took off. a high-end heist in union square two people crashed a car into the chanel boutique on maiden lane at about 3:00 this morning. the passenger then got out and stole a bunch of handbags from the store. the two then drove off. new surveillance video shows it only took a few seconds for a cleveland police officer to open fire on a boy who was holding a toy gun. the 12-year-old is seen walking near a playground in cleveland last saturday. he points that pellet gun at people several times. officers say they told the boy to raise his hands three times believing that the gun was real. he appears to still be holding that toy gun when the officers get out of their car. shots are fired a couple of seconds later, tamir died at the hospital. the officers are on administrative leave. >> a young girl with the love of the movie "frozen" had one complaint. the fight for her little sister that's going all the way to disney studios. >> and a live look at chairs already lined up. we'll break down the doorbuster deals worth lining up early for. female announcer: when you see this truck, it means another neighbor is going to sleep better tonight. but sleep train's ticket to tempur-pedic event ends sunday. through sunday, choose from a huge selection of tempur-pedic models, including the new tempur-choice, with head-to-toe customization. plus, get 36 months interest-free financing, two free pillows, and free same-day delivery. are you next? but hurry! sleep train's ticket to tempur-pedic event ends sunday. ♪ your ticket to a better night's sleep ♪ they both love the disney m frozen. it started with the bay area girl standing up for her little sister with down syndrome. they both love the disney move "frozen." but delaney knew something was missing. a character her sister could relate to. reporter kristine lazar on the message the girls delivered to disney headquarters. >> reporter: one after another a bay area family handed over books filled with signatures at disney studios in burbank. >> i want people to know how amazing children with down syndrome are. >> reporter: kesstin ott-dahl and her partner started an online petition to encourage disney to create characters with disabilities in its animated films. >> we put the petition up and we had 1,000 signatures in an hour. so then we knew we had something. so then we decided, well, we're going to try for 10,000 signatures. and we had that in five days. >> reporter: the petition now has more than 75,000 signatures. the movement was inspired by the 16-month old daughter delaney who has down syndrome. earlier this year, the family says delaney was watching a disney movie with her older sister who started crying telling her mom delaney could never be a princess. >> jules told me no, mommy she can't because there are no princesses with down syndrome. >> reporter: do you want see characters like your sister in the movies? >> yes. >> reporter: why is that? >> because i love my baby sister. >> reporter: disney responded to the petition in an email to the family. it reads in part, the disney brand has always been inclusive with stories that reflect acceptance and tolerance and celebrate the differences that make our characters uniquely wonderful in their own way. but the email stopped short of a commitment to creating characters with disabilities. >> kids will be familiar and they won't be afraid and discrimination will not even exist in their hearts. >> reporter: and the in a amly says teach children with disabilities that dreams do come true. >> they can do anything that anybody can do. >> reporter: in burbank, kristine lazar, kpix 5. >> that family says this is a petition not a protest and that disney has been welcoming to them and sending them tickets to go to disneyland. lots of people are lining up to stuff their shopping carts tomorrow. many already camped out and they tell our ann notarangelo the deals are worth the wait and to that, ann, i say what deals are worth it? >> reporter: for people who like to shop this is the time to do it. this is kind of an anemic showing so far only a couple of chairs. but across the bay area, we have found people who have been camped out for the last week. >> i'm going to beltway the game. i'm gonna get some good stuff. i'm going to play the game. i'm going to enjoy it. >> reporter: it's a family campout in emeryville for the best deals. and we found some. best buy opens at 5:00 tomorrow with a laptop for $300. 100 less than the normal price. other great thanksgiving day deals? at 5 p.m., toys 'r us has a 7" tablet half off just 40 bucks. an hour later at 6:00, target has a wi-fi blu-ray dvd player $70 off on sale for 50 bucks. over at walmart, people will line up for this 50" tv priced at 218 when they open at 6:00. kmart is kicking off the holiday season at 6:00 tomorrow morning. they are selling 5-dollar can openers toasters and irons and 9-dollar board games. so how good are the prices and the deals the next two days? it depends. if we spend a lot of money this might be the best we see but if we're not spending enough retailers will discount prices toward christmas. in pleasant hill, ann notarangelo, kpix 5. >> okay. >> you have a panda hat? if you want to dump it, a san francisco food truck is offering giants fans a trade for that pablo sandoval hat. bacon bacon says it will be more than glad to take your hat now that the panda is off to boston. in exchange you will get what they call the bouquet described as bacon, bacon, bacon, and more bacon. >> wow. i just got hungry. santa clara's planning to put on quite the show when it hosts super bowl 50. the city has approved $2 million in funding for various events. santa clara wants to put on parade and fireworks. that's on top of events planned in san francisco which is the official host city. you will be able to watch super bowl 50 right here on kpix 5. >> that's down the road. we are looking at the next couple of days. >> lots of rain. >> this is going to be a super soaker. we don't say that, that often because it's been two years since we have had one. but this period of time the next six days going to be really, really wet. not tomorrow, not black friday for all the people waiting in line for the special deals. it starts on saturday. and it is going to pour. let's get through wednesday night. traffic surprisingly almost nonexistent heading into san francisco. i guess everybody is leaving. 69 degrees right now in oakland. livermore at 63. a beautiful day in san francisco. you're currently at 64. san bruno 64. san jose and santa rosa in the low 60s. a little more humid tonight which will promote some fog, not much. san rafael down to 47. that humid air will hold on to the heat a little better so concord 46. mountain view 48. how much rainfall are we talking? what is a super soaker? how about this. more rain may fall in san francisco over the next 6 days than fell in san francisco over the previous 215. we are talking 3 inches of rain in san francisco with perhaps double that in the north bay. that's a half foot of rainfall. it is the clash of weather titans. we have a very strong wound up area of low pressure but it's being blocked by an equally strong area of high pressure. this is actually good news. the fact that it's not raining right now is good news because the ridge wasn't here, this would slide way to the north. we get a little rainfall, done. instead, it's going to kind of load up its ammo and then when the ridge leaves it's going to wobble down to the south grab the tropical moisture and then move over us. this transition will happen friday evening where the rain begins in the north bay. i'm talking saturday, sunday, monday, and now also tuesday. 4 days. not going to rain all the time all four days. there will be breaks in between the wet weather but it will be raining heavy at times periods of heavy rainfall over a 96- hour period. how much rain does that mean for you? if you are watching us in san jose you could get 2" of rain. in the east bay walnut creek and antioch up to 3" of rain. if you are in the higher elevations of marin on sonoma county you could see 6" of rain. equally as much in the santa cruz mountains. and then san francisco and foster city and redwood city, we are talking 2 to 3.5" of rainfall. dry weather tomorrow, dry weather through friday evening. but that very wet pattern begins saturday lasts through tuesday and the wettest weather since november of 2012, it has been 2 years since we have had this much rain over a few days. san jose tomorrow for thanksgiving, happy thanksgiving, 71 for you. palo alto 69. it will be a sunny day in san ramon 71. pittsburg 70. thanksgiving in san francisco 65 with some morning fog. sonoma 67. and lakeport 67. cloudy on friday still dry. the rain begins on saturday and will rain through tuesday. it will get very wet starting this weekend. back to you. >> thank you.
