Bedroom of one of the homes. Firefighters say he died of smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. But firefighters say it did start outside between the two homes where youre looking at right now with our live shot. The tree in between those two homes is some sort of a cypress tree and that tree caught fire and that helped the fire get above into the roof line area, liz. And that is what caused the fire to spread so rapidly. Once it got into the rafters and to the attic space, there was basically no slowing it down. And it did continue to burn in fact, five hours later there was a big flareup and fortunately firefighters had not left the scene and they were able to put that out. Those flames were so intense, len. Thank goodness those brave Tree Trimmers were there. They saved the day. Unbelievable. Reporter thats right. They were working nearby when no one else was around and they started knocking on doors and doing just what you would hope somebody would do to warn people to get out of the way because a fire was starting up. Brave guys there. All right, len, thank you. This is the before and after i wanted you to see. Now, heres chopper 5 footage showing Joseph Moreno standing on top of his roof. He used his garden hose to spray down his home as flames were burning next door. Sunnyvale firefighters screamed at him to evacuate to get down. Cops even threatened to arrest him. He ignored the orders and kept going. He believes his actions is what saved his home. I think they are stupid. They werent even putting any water on my house on my property and the flames were coming on my property. They are putting that water on the other side of the house so theres no water on my side of the house if i didnt stay and put water up, my house would have gone up, too. Thats what forced them to come to my side of the house and put water. You start water on my house or im not coming down. Not advisable by us. We dont want him to slip and fall. If that happens it takes away our resources to take care of him. Quite stupid. I wouldnt recommend doing that but i had no choice. You just felt the need to protect my property. Reporter would you do it again . Yes reporter the house is saved. Only some minor water and smoke damage. Now, before joseph hopped on his roof, he carried all four of his dogs to safety. Three of those, he says, are his guide dogs since his right eye is blind. Now, joseph has had that house for about five years. There it is. You can see the garage door open. It is intact. It is safe. He says its his first house and he was going to doing everything he could to save the house. Live in sunnyvale, im da lin, kpix 5.
