>> well, i don't believe so. >> reporter: prosecutors said the video made in his bedroom allegedly shows him dragging his girlfriend from the bed to the floor kicking and hitting her. 117 times over 30 minutes. he faced 45 counts of battery and false imprisonment. then the case started to unravel. >> very high-powered attorney was hired for her and then she became unavailable to us. >> reporter: hired by whom. we don't know. >> reporter: and the judge threw out the video evidence. >> because we were left with no witness and no video. >> reporter: that has to anger you? >> it's disappointing. it's disappointing on many levels because we know this is the kind of case where you know you have significant levels of domestic violence. >> reporter: he avoided years in state prison and got 52 weeks of domestic violence counseling, three years' probation, and 25 hours of community service. >> which is woefully inadequate accountability for a batterer and that's a disappointment for us. >> reporter: a domestic violence counselor wished the case went to trial even if it was weak. >> it still would have meant that the -- that the information, the charges, would have been heard in court and then we would have learned a lot more about what happened. >> reporter: the irony in this case, in his own video chahal talks about being bullied in school and how his own experiences humbled him. >> i was the only one in school and it got sometimes violent, got physical abuse, emotional abuse. >> reporter: despite his guilty plea, chahal still claims innocence. in twitter postings today he claimed that he was cornered into accepting his misdemeanor pleas and that all of this was overblown allegations because of his high-profile status. those postings have since been taken down. reporting live in san francisco, linda yee, kpix 5. >> today the democratic national committee returned a $20,000 check donated by chahal. there's another tech big wig in trouble, too. this one accused of assault in a road rage beating in marin. this is jeff smock in a corporate video when he was head of iron data. he is accused of getting off his bicycle and beating a driver unconscious. witnesses say smock kept hitting the 55-year-old man even after he was down. it happened last month at the corner of east blithedale in camino valley. police say there was an argument about whether he hit a bike. the condition of the driver is under no. no charges filed. a man accused of seeking revenge on his doctor made his first court appearance. this is 84-year-old raymond iwase. cameras weren't allowed in the courtroom for today's hearing. he phase an attempted murder charge. -- he faces an attempted murder charge. the prosecutor tells us what led up to the shooting on wednesday inside a medical building in daly city. >> he apparently was seeking a doctor who treated him a couple of years earlier. raymond iwase was apparently unhappy with the treatment he had received and had come back to seek revenge on the doctor. >> iwase did not enter a plea and is being held without bail. he is due back in court next week. caught on camera a busy morning for two armed robbers who knocked off a couple of 7- eleven stores. it happened just before sunrise in san jose. one on white road the other martin avenue. kpix 5's keit do with the story of one clerk who knew exactly what to do. >> reporter: surveillance video captured the two masked men storming the 7-eleven on south white road then hopping the counter with guns drawn. the clerk knew not to put up a fight with such brazen criminals. you have been robbed a lot of times? >> yeah. >> reporter: you're a pro at it? >> yeah. >> reporter: the clerk searched him for weapons and then demanded he open both registers which he did. the two robbers took $300 in cash, scratch tickets, other items and bananas all in 52 seconds. were you going to try to do something? >> no. i was scared. so i never thought i would do something to them. i didn't want any trouble so i just let them go. >> reporter: san jose police say the crooks went on to rob another 7-eleven about a mile away. then for some reason they got out on foot and started causing cars nearby. a neighbor called 911. officers arrived and spotted the two suspects. but they bolted. sjpd surrounded the neighborhood of three dozen homes and began searching door to door with a k-9 unit and assault rifles drawn. they found some clothing but not much else. just how dangerous are they? >> they're armed robbers with a handgun that walked into a store and committed and armed robbery which is serious. >> reporter: back at the first 7-eleven a man is seen terrified in the surveillance video with his hand up. the homeless man had this message. >> change your direction in life. >> reporter: as you can see from the video investigators don't have much to go on only saying that the suspects are asian last seen wearing dark clothing. if you have any information, san jose police want you to give them a call. in san jose, kiet do, kpix 5. other bay area headlines, oakland police say tips from the community helped them catch an arsonist in this surveillance video. a man seen walking around a children's hospital office building just minutes before it was set on fire earlier this month. 43-year-old john fitzgibbons was already in jail for violating a court order. he is now charged with felony arson. you can't blame the rain for this flood. church was there as a le rewas -- chopper 5 was there as a levee was intentionally breached there this morning. it's a restoration project sponsored by the army corps of engineers. it will restore 650 acres of mash land. the warriors changed to golden state. now they are asking for input on whether to change the name back to the san francisco warriors. a warriors spokesman says they are not considering it at this time. however, a decision could come as the team draws closer to moving to san francisco. they helped in hurricane katrina and 9/11 but nothing compared to this. >> this wasn't a normal digging operation. >> back from a devastating mud slide. a bay area rescue team on the most challenging mission of their lives. >> a popular high school student murdered before prom. how it all may have been prevening over rejected invitations. >> they said, according to our records, you are deceased. >> imagine hearing that on the phone, huh? a bay area woman fights to prove she is not dead. you won't believe what it took to sort out that mistake. we're getting to know him a little better or at least we is. these pict the stowaway teen remains in a hawaii hospital tonight. we are getting to know him better at least who he is. these pictures are from 15-year- old's facebook page. and there's nothing too out of the ordinary about them. his mother is speaking out tonight. she talked to the "daily mail" saying, quote, if i could give a message to my son, i would say, i am still alive and i will come one day. please stay calm and do not do anything stupid. >> the boy's father reportedly told the son the mother died in a rocket attack years ago and the mother then said, i am extremely worried about my son. the fact that he did what he did shows that he is unhappy. the preliminary report that was released today detailed the events of the deadly bus crash in orland. the national transportation safety board report makes no mention of the fedex truck being on fire before the crash. witnesses in a car said that they saw flames coming from the semi as it crossed over the median along interstate 5. 10 people died when that fedex truck hit a tour bus full of students, hit it head on. a full investigation could take months. a rejected prom invitation may have sparked a brutal attack inside a high school in connecticut. that attack left a 16-year-old student dead. other students mourned outside jonathan law high school in milford. 16-year-old honor student maren sanchez was stabbed to death and police are investigating whether the suspect attacked her after she declined his invitation to the junior prom. >> she was of a 16-year-old junior vibrant, very, very involved in jonathan law high school. an incredible contributor someone who was loved and respected. >> that prom was scheduled for tonight but it has since been postponed. the 16-year-old boy who allegedly stabbed sanchez is in custody on suicide watch. his name is not being released because of his age. when i walked outside and i saw all of those people and it was just raining downpouring down on us, my heart was warmed. >> the disappointing outcome for people desperate for healthcare. >> a massive mud slide, tonight a bay area rescuer describes his most difficult mission ever the tireless work to recover victims in washington state. ,,,,,, female announcer: get three years interest-free financing on brand name mattress sets. plus, get free delivery, and sleep train's 100-day low price guarantee. sleep train's interest free for 3 event, is ending soon. ♪ your ticket to a better night's sleep ♪ washington state. crews have spent more than a month looking for tons of debr there are still two people missing after the massive mid slide in washington state. crews have spent more than a month looking for people buried in tons of debris. 41 bodies have been recovered so far. kpix 5's len ramirez talked to a veteran bay area fire chief who is just back from that slide and he is saying, len, it's unlike any disaster he has seen before? >> reporter: very touching interview that we just did. this was a very bad disaster up in washington state. i'm actually at the home of california task force three in menlo park a warehouse full of interesting devices heavy equipment and things like this. this is actually called the search cam. the camera extends on a pole and you can look into tight crevices with these lights and camera and find bodies. this is the type of equipment they just took up to washington state to help search for victims. frank worked rescue and recovery operations at katrina and the world trade center. today he is just back from the landslide in washington state, an operation he said was even more difficult. >> katrina, many of those victims were found on top of the surface or in areas where we could easily acquire them. we didn't have to dig for many of those. this here was complicated by the millions of cubic yards of mud and dirt, debris and trees on top of them. >> reporter: he is a division chief with menlo park fire but a section leader with fema's national urban search-and- rescue team. he spent almost the past month in the community of oso where 41 people were buried alive when the hillside above them gave way. >> what we're looking for was debris from houses, vehicles, and trying to attach those to put them back to where they came from. >> reporter: he said every shovelful of dirt they turned over was checked for human remains. >> we wanted to bring these people back to their families and that was our challenge up there bring them back as dignified as possible. >> reporter: only two of the missing have not been recovered, he says search teams will go back later this spring. and california task force 3 is one of eight such task forces in california, one of 28 in the nation. they are all packed up with gear ready to go charged up and they can be anywhere in the country in six hours. reporting live in menlo park, len ramirez, kpix 5. natural gas explosion rattled a small seattle suburb flattening three businesses. the aftermath looking like a war zone but they say the disaster could have been much worse. it happened at 3:45 a.m. when no one was around. debris littered the street for five blocks even landing on power lines. flames engulfed this barbershop. authorities say only a couple of people suffered minor injuries at a nearby assisted living facility. ukraine's prime minister says russia wants to start a third world war and fears an imminent russian invasion. tensions continue to escalate in that region. ukranian antiterrorist forces have moved to push pro-russian forces out of the east. meanwhile russian fighter jets have flown into ukrainian airspace several times over the last 4 hours. >> they are going to attack ukraine. we are going to resist any invasion. and we call upon the russian authorities to stop this madness. >> now, adding to the standoff, pro-russian forces in eastern ukraine have detained a team of international observers. they believe they're hiding a spy from kiev. stocks tumbled today due to the escalating situation in ukraine. the dow, nasdaq and s&p were down. a huge turnout in the rain for free medical checkups. >> it is very heart-wrenching quite frankly. when i walked outside and i saw all of those people and it was just raining downpouring down on us, my heart was [ indiscernible ] >> thousands who can't otherwise afford it showed up in oakland and vallejo for free health screenings, eye check-up and dental work. >> i am a single mom and sole provider. i don't get child support. so, uhm, it's -- it's fabulous tore me because dental care is just so expensive. it's fabulous for me. >> nearly 100 healthcare providers volunteered for the bridges to health event to treat nearly 3,000 people. organizers say there weren't enough healthcare providers some people had to be turned away. kind of a wild day weather- wise today. it was raining, it was sunny, it kind of went a little off and on. >> and all throughout the day was chilly highs in the afternoon only in the low 50s. about 15 degrees below normal so what happened?
