On to campaign 2016. The recent primaries were make or break for some president ial hopefuls. Donald trump took north carolina, illinois and florida, most important, where its winnertakeall. Trump earned 99 delegates there spelling the end of marco rubios campaign. Hillary clinton scored key wins widening her lead over Bernie Sanders. Most all, yesterdays primary lit the match for 2 underdogs. John kasich who took his home state of ohio was one of them. I want you to know the Campaign Goes on. And i also want you to know that its been my intention to make you proud. You do not have to accept the status quo senator ted cruz brushed off kasichs big win saying trump is his true competition t still, kasich is the only one of the pack returning to the campaign trail today. He is going back to work. California to be in play for the republicans. Here is our kpix 5 political analyst melissa caen to talk more about it. Good morning. All right. So i watched trumps victory speech yesterday. He was talking about bringing republicans together. What is the path for trump now and how does he get enough delegates to avoid a brokered convention . To be clear his lost in ohio was not fatal. He will still get the majority of delegates that he needs by the convention to become the nominee. However, um, it is getting a little more difficult to sort of map that road. What he is going to need are big wins in big states like new york and california. Thats right our primary there in the first week in june could be decisive in terms of whether trump is propelled to that nomination or if we end up with a brokered convention. Remember, in california, we allocate our delegates by congressional districts. So you need a big ground game. I think we can all expect to start getting some phone calls from candidates here in the next couple of weeks as it looks like the race is going to be close. That will be fun because its been a while since california made a difference. Were so excited dont just come here for the money. Talk to us. How about marco rubio . In his home state he a big piece of humble pie last night. Hes done. Who is going to benefit from him leaving . So, you know, its hard to predict where voters kind of hearts and minds go. Of course maybe you could see some folks moving over to donald trump or, um, or ted cruz. But the majority of rubios votes i would think would go to john kasich. Maybe not 100 . He seems to be the primary beneficiary. And look, were moving into elections in states like pennsylvania which to some degree are similar to ohio where john kasich might have a chance thanks to the now homeless rubio voters who can find that kasich is more aligned with them. So looks like kasich will not be the nominee. But he could do some damage. So whats next for clinton and sanders . Sanders has to be really smarting from these losses. He had some momentum going in but then Hillary Clinton really won big in some states that the senator was counting on so for sanders, he could still be the nominee. Theres still a path for him. But it is threading a needle at this point. He needs remember, democrats award delegates proportionally so he can not only beat Hillary Clinton in several races but beat her with huge margins to shore up delegates. And again, it brings into play states like new york and california. These are the large states with big delegate pools sanders needs for the nomination. That Cleveland Convention is going to be fun . Exciting. Book your flight. I did well talk to you again next hour. Thank you. See you then. Time now 5 09. There one day and gone the next. Part of a highway collapses after recent el nino rains.
