>> reporter: everyone in washington is checking out donald trump poll numbers and whether they were for real. he went into iowa ahead. he came in second place. if he doesn't win tonight in new hampshire, there's going to be talk that his campaign was all bluster and, of course, people are going to be watching whether or not marco rubio's robotic responses are going to hurt him or he will still be seen as a main alternative to trump. but unlike iowa, new hampshire really matters in that the republicans 80% of the time, the republican winner wins the nomination and in the modern era, no one has ever finished worse than second place in iowa and gone on to win either the democratic or the republican nomination. >> is new hampshire representative of the u.s. other than iowa? >> reporter: so we have gone, frank, from a small white state in iowa to a smaller and even whiter state. let me give you perspective. richmond across the bay in the east bay has more blacks than the state of new hampshire. daly city has twice as many asians as entire state of new hampshire. you can fit every latino who lives in the granite state into a giants game in at&t park. now, on the republican side, that is not necessarily that different from their electorate but on the democratic side it's nothing like the normal democratic vote so that's why no matter how well sanders or even clinton does tonight, it's going to take nevada and south carolina coming up over the course of this next month to figure out how the democratic race stands. >> sure. well, apparently some polls suggest that new hampshire voters are angry. why are they angry? >> reporter: they're angry in part because republicans are telling them that america is in an abyss. look at new hampshire's unemployment rate. it's 3.9%. that's way better than california. they are also -- but in a sense they are angry because politicians aren't letting them into the process. they are angry at the money in politics. they are angry at these robotic responses that marco rubio is giving. that's why you have the capitalist donald trump, the socialist bernie sanders, out ahead in the polls right now. >> despite the snow i'm hearing 70 to 75% voter turnout. so they are taking this very seriously. it should be a very interesting night in new hampshire. marc sandalow live for us in washington, thank you, marc. a lunar new year celebration nearly goes up in flames in san jose. the celebration was happening at the grand century shopping center on story road last night. kpix 5 reporter kiet do is at the shopping center with what firefighters think caused the fire. reporter: we are live in east san jose and this huge mess that you see here, well, this is a normal thing for this time of year. it is the first day of the -- i should say the second day of the lunar new year. but if you look off there in the corner, that is not normal. we have been covering this topic for 16 years watching this evolve over time. illegal fireworks have become a routine part of vietnamese new year celebrations in san jose. but this is a new one. this is cell phone video of the wild scene last night here at the mall where you can see roman candles and mortars firing into the air. police say one of those mortars landed in a tree and then caught the tree on fire. witnesses say the crowd just watched for a couple of minutes until the flames spread to the main building. somebody called 911 and that's triggered a two-alarm response. san jose firefighters got to the scene knocked down the flames quickly and the fire was downgraded to a one-alarm fire. the building had only exterior damage to one business, century bakery. this man saw the whole thing. >> i seen somebody throw away one, um, [ indiscernible ] and he [ indiscernible ] [ inaudible ] >> nobody run, everybody watch fireworks. >> reporter: so illegal fireworks first got on our radar about 2000, the year 2000. celebrations at a temple on mclaughlin avenue spilled into the street and san jose police had a huge response calling in officers in riot gear about 16 years ago. but over time, the city learned to dial back the police response trying to figure out how to walk this delicate line between enforce, the law and allowing the vietnamese community to celebrate the new year. then the recession hit. officers quit. and that left the department shorthanded to respond to fireworks calls which are low priority within the department. the celebrations at the grand century mall are an annual event where people traveling from all over to see it. it's always rowdy here at night. people have gotten injured and had several fire calls here over the years. so you really come here at your own risk. the city has known about these celebrations here for at least a couple of years. we're live in east san jose, kiet do, kpix 5. the year of the monkey is starting with a lot of warm weather. that's for sure. my gosh. 80 degrees in some areas. >> we're having more fun than a barrel of monkeys! the toll plaza right now. so looks good out of oakland into san francisco. as you work your way along the golden gate bridge this morning fine. 580 to the golden gate bridge 14 minutes. the rest of the bridges checking in problem-free. that includes the san mateo bridge, 12 minutes between 880 and 101 westbound. a first look at the south bay so far, so good along 101 in both directions. all the hype and hoopla is over. now it's time to assess whether it was worth it for the bay area to host super bowl 50. kpix 5's jackie ward is live in san francisco with more reporter: good morning. now it's time to analyze. what went well, what didn't work and would the people of the bay area do it again? 1.1million people visited the area this past week. they filled super bowl city and justin herman plaza and spilled out on the embarcadero and market street. now the question for those of house lived here, was it worth it? we are getting a good feel about what the bay area thought about hosting super bowl 50. it's a fairly positive response. when asked how they would rate the event, 42% said they were excellent. 25% said good. 19% said fair. 11% poor. in the same poll we asked if the financial benefits from hosting the super bowl outweighed the inconveniences. 49% said no. 36% said yes. 15% weren't sure. >> i didn't go to it but, yeah. >> nothing positive to say? >> i heard they had crab fries. >> reporter: so not everyone benefited financially these last three weeks. city permitted vendors were displaced to make room for super bowl city. now supervisor aaron peskin wants to give those small vendors half a million dollars for dealing with the disruptions. so supervisor peskin is still criticizing how much the city will potentially have to pay to the super bowl last year in the number of residents going without health insurance. states seeing coverage gains are a mix of democratic and republican voting. data from the same government reports shows the uninsured rate for the u.s. as a whole dropped 5% over the last two years as obamacare saw a major expansion. president obama wants congress to approve emergency funding to fight the zika. today obama is asking for nearly $2 billion of aid to stop the spread of the virus which is typically transferred through mosquitos. it's been linked to birth defects that cause babies to be born with unusually you will see the bulk of the delays out of the altamont pass. pretty typical westbound 205 make the connector to 580 out of tracy. so not too bad this time of the morning. 22 minutes altamont pass to 680. taking a look at your eastshore freeway commute so far, so good. traffic light on all approaches to the bay bridge right now. no metering lights just yet. seeing a few cars backed up in the cash lanes but overall a nice ride out of oakland into san francisco. once you get into san francisco, super bowl city closures are in effect southbound embarcadero closed near the ferry building. that will be there at least until friday. the good news is howard is open now. all the lanes are reopened between 3rd and 4th. so they are starting to clear things. but we were speaking about that here during the break and i guess you are still getting stuck in some of that backup especially along battery and market. it looks like it might have been busier. so hopefully people avoided the area last week but now they are all back to work so it's busy in the financial district. southbound golden gate bridge looks good. they did the zipper truck earlier so the lane changes adding more lanes for your morning commute out of marin county, no delays into san francisco. the san mateo bridge looks nice. we have a nice drive westbound between 880 and 101. only 13 minutes. it was a beautiful day
