The sinkhole opened up last wednesday at the intersection of alvarado boulevard and fair ranch road. District Officials Say a broken water main is at the root of the problem. Both westbound lanes on alvarado boulevard will be closed as crews work to try to fix those pipes. There is now a temporary barrier in place on the 23rd avenue overpass in oakland. The fence that was there fell on to 880 monday night. The chp is trying to figure out how it happened. The section that fell was long enough that it blocked traffic both directions for about an hour. Crews removed it but not before it caused a 10car crash. A caddy in the crash burst into flames. The driver made it out okay. Two other people involved in the wreck did go to the hospital. Researchers say Monarch Butterfly populations have dropped from a billion to fewer than 60 million in the last two decades. For the immediate future, San Francisco will remain a sanctuary city. The board of supervisors tabled a resolution that would have encouraged some cooperation with federal immigration officials. The sanctuary city policy has come under fire since kate steinle was shot and killed on pier 14 in july. The suspect is an undocumented immigrant with a long criminal record. He was released from a San Francisco jail despite the feds desire to deport him. Whenever there is a suggestion that somebody could harbor federally convicted felons from being potentially prosecuted or caught, then were left with an open question. We believe that Public Safety requires that we make a very clear distinction between local Law Enforcement and immigration enforcement. With the sanctuary city policy in the national spotlight, politicians are divided on what direction to take. Meantime in washington, dc, Senate Democrats blocked a bill to crackdown on sanctuary cities. It would have cut off federal funding for cities that do not cooperate with immigration officials. Vta is tearing up alum rock avenue on the east side but the contractor was fired and now the project is on hold.
