will drivers start seeing savings at the gas pump? good evening, i'm ryan yamamoto. an east bay couple caught in the crossfire of a freeway shootout in oakland. the man behind the wheel shows our sara done chi how they literally evaded a bullet. >> reporter: that was the definition of a close call. a bullet flew through garrett mason's car on 580 in oakland. he was caught in the middle of one driver chasing another. then. >> one of the vehicles' passengers got outside of their window, basically sat up on their passenger window and opened fire at the car that was tailing them. one of the bul happened to go through our windshield. >> reporter: and where it hit the windshield made the difference between a scary situation and a deadly one. it was inches away from garrett's fiance. even though he caught it on their dash cam, the shooter got away. garrett isn't alone but is lucky. dozens of freeway shootings have prompted governor newsom to pledge funding for a new camera system. >> it's kind of what the cops have echoed, that those types of incidents are on the rise. the only thing that was unique about our situation was how the bullet had gone straight through and how we had the footage of the occurrence. that was really the only part t that shocked them. >> reporter: garrett is working with a detective but isn't optimistic his case will be solved since he didn't catch a plate number or image of the shooter. he's glad his fiance is ongkay, but it's forcing him to answer tough questions about living in the area. >> unbelievable when you see how close that bullet came to her. we reached out to chp. no official response on where things stand. a tragic accident in mountain view where a boy drowned. investigators are trying to determine what happened. now to the fire watch where a fire is 40% contained. and a group of people forced to seek shelter inside a pg&e power plant. we have more on the drastic decision one father made to save his family. >> reporter: fourth of july fish something a tradition in john sullivan's family, but this year was different. >> we had gotten the kids set up on the beach. >> reporter: when he noticed a nearby bonfire out of control. john and his wife grabbed their 8 month old daughter and 5-year-old son and ran. >> you can't go this way. . it's not safe. i need everyone to turn around. >> reporter: the group fled to a nearby pg&e property. first responders forced them inside. >> there's the power plant. most of us were in there. >> reporter: in this picture, you think this fire's coming right for us. . >> the fire was coming a lot faster than we thought it was. i called my father and said i love. >> reporter: fire surrounded the property. what did your mom say to you when you said that you loved her in. >> okay, i love you. and i'll he sao whsee you when out of there. >> reporter: was there ever a point -- >> we might not make it? absolutely. i thought about putting the 5-year-old in my backpack and floating down the river with him. >> we also saw several new brush fires in the bay area. this one in sonoma county. the flames were first spotted around 6:30 and burned about five acres before crews got it under control e. and a big flame started and subsided quickly. a mass shooting at a fourth of july parade in chicago, the suspect not only confessed but s said he considered attacking a second parade in wisconsin. investigators say he fired 83 rounds into the crowd, reloading his legally-purchased rifle twice before then escaping the scene disguised in women's clothing. police are no closer to a motive. >> you know, i don't know that we're going to get a why from him. we don't have any better understanding today than when we first started talking to him about the why in particular. >> reporter: an attorney for the suspect's family says his parents didn't see any warning signs despite a number of troubling social media posts, threats of violence and encounters with police in 2019. a restaurant is serving up its final plates after losing its long-time lease. the landlord happens to run the world famous restaurant next door. >> reporter: after more than 24 years serving the community. >> it's not ready to say good-bye quite yet. every night can you hear the rumable of chatter as dishes and cocktails are served. this is not just another restaurant but a place where regulars and foodies have been coming for years, in some cases decades. >> i've been coming here ever since they opened. i remember when they constructed the place and walking by saying when are they going to open? >> it's a sad loss. there's been so many losses in the last few years, this is just another one, another place that has to go. it's kind of sad. >> reporter: cesar lost its lease when the landlord decided not to renew. >> she just doesn't understand how much the people that come to cesar love cesar. >> reporter: its original founders have had a long-standing relationship with shea paniece. >> the original founders are gone and why should cesar be here? >> reporter: the restaurant announcing wednesday that it is close to inking a lease at a new location nearby. the foagoal is to reopen as quiy as they can so as july 23 approaches cesar is telling customers see you soon again. >> if we were just closing andiand going away they'd be devastated, leaping out of windows. i think saying that we will be in a new location has given them great hope. crude futures are looking up again at this hour after dipping below $100 a barrel earlier today. and while recession fears are expected to keep pushing prices lower, industry experts say it may take a while to really see an impact at the pump. >> stations do deliver the lower prices, but it takes them time to get access to that cheaper price, to sell through their expensive fuel and start lowering their price. >> that analyst tells us prices will probably drop by a penny or two avevery day for the next couple weeks. plans to close california's last nuclear power plant may be put on hold. pg&e had plans to close that plant in 2025. still ahead tonight, governor newsom facing big backlash over his family vacation destination. his response to the critics. san francisco is trying to stop the spread of monkeypox. and we will introduce to you the potbelly pig that won at the monk . tonight, governor newsom's office defending his decision to take a trip. reporter tom wait has the heated debate. >> let's talk about what's going on in america. >> reporter: governor newsom made headlines with this ad that aired in florida on fox news over the weekend, ripping republicans. >> i urge all of you living in florida to join the fight. >> reporter: but with high profile comes more scrutiny. now he is getting pummeled online for taking a trip to montana because it is on a list banning state travel for lgbtq policies. >> newsom didn't break any laws. this is not some kind of major scandal. but it is something of a warning to team newsom. he is starting to play the national politics. and, if he continues to play in national politics, he'll be subject to a level of scrutiny that he's just not used to. >> reporter: the governor's office released a statement about the montana trip that reads in part, the state's travel ban extends to state fund us. connecting the two is irresponsible and falsely implies there is something untoward. this was a family trip. testi democrats have banned travel to these states. >> the governor's office would not say if newsom was with his taxpayer-funded security detail. back here in the bay area. investigators are being looking for the cause of a fire that ripped through a home in san jose. it was east of 101 and capital expressway. luckily no one was hurt. and tonight san francisco is warning some people who attended the pride weekend to watch out for symptoms of monkeypox. the city has reported 40 cases, nearly double the number from last week. transmission was traced to at least one event during pride. doctors say anyone who attended large events to look out for symptoms. >> it definitely can be transmitted in multiple ways. >> head to our website kpix.com for more information. the only abortion clinic in the state of mississippi closed its doors about an hour ago. the ban went into effect at midnight. the only exceptions are for rape or to save the life of the mother. opponents argue the wording of the law is too vague. new video out of south dakota where a storm flipped a 18 wheeler and turned the skies an eerie laishade of green. as we check in with paul, the one thing a lot of people in san francisco noticed, the air was very heavy. >> yeah, the past couple days especially. today it wasn't quite as humid. if you went out this evening you probably noticed the difference. the fire danger is going to ramp up. but we have one more day in this same weather pattern. below average temperatures thanks to the system that's parked off the coast. close enough to squeeze the atmosphere, produce onshore winds. the storm system gets nudged a little to the north and the heat dome isn't going to be directly overhead but close enough to influence our weather and push temperatures up to above average by sunday and monday. right now, though, still in the same pattern, there is the fog rolling back in as we look out from the mark hopkins hotel. everybody between 59 and 63 degrees. the fog is going to continue spreading into the inland areas. the fog is going to eventually dissipate a little faster than it did today, which gives us a couple hours of additional sunshine. it should happen by about noon at the latest. everybody ends up in the 50s. no change from normal across the board for our wake-up temperatures on thursday. high temperatures near the bay still close to average within a couple degrees on either side.i. low 60s around the coast. temperatures farther into the 70s, even a few spots around 80 degrees in the santa clara valley. tri valley, the fog hanging on just a bit longer. your temperature still in the 70s, but low to mid-80s through the delta. mid-80s isn't bad in july. temperatures in the upper 60s in san francisco. low 70s for east bay. a mix of 70s and 80s for the north bay. tempera temperatures will warmup sunday and monday. it's not much of a warmup around the bay. inland temperatures hit the mid to upper 80s. the temperatures in the low 90s inland and the east bay drop down to the 80s. we return to normal by tuesday a and wednesday. giants fans went on a rollercoaster ride. steph curry has his finals mvp bu c . the giants are just a game out of the playoffs right now, so it could be a whole lot worse, but climbing back into the nl west race is going to be tough. like you're still living in a storybook year? >> oh, it definitely does. every time you hear "congrats champ." you catch yourself, oh, yeah, we really did that. obviously, we're going to enjoy the celebration and what we accomplished and then in due time get ready for hopefully another run next year. >> cleveland browns have interesttheir run this year, they traded baker mayfield in exchange for a draft pick, fifth rounder. it's now july 6th, and jimmy g is still a 49er. there's a lot of different ways this could end. most likely, a trade, but he's going to have to throw a football post shoulder surgery in order to be traded. we'll see what happens with that, but i wouldn't expect any movement anytime soon. >> if you only get a fifth for baker mayfield, what are you going to get for
