11 seconds from disaster, tonight an aviation expert tells kpix5 we escaped catastrophe at sfo but just barely. Good evening. Im elizabeth cook. Im ken bastida. Andria borba is live at sfo tonight with some new details on that near disaster. Reporter late friday night there were four airplanes stacked up on the taxiway here at sfo, three United Airlines flights, one Philippines Air flight, all filled with fuel and more than 1,000 passengers when that near miss happened. When air canada flight 759 was descending from the skies to sfo, california insurance commissioner was on board. He knew something was wrong with the landing. As we were about to land in San Francisco, suddenly the plane stopped descending and instead sharply began a very steep climb with the engines laboring. Reporter after the climb and banking around the San Francisco bay the pilot had this to say. Nonchalantly came on the intercom and said that theres been a little more traffic at the airport than anticipated, so they were going to swing back around and land again in a moment. Reporter this traffic was this, four planes stacked up on taxiway charlie on the same strip the canada flight tried to land on but the same one he was assigned to. Listen to the traffic from the other pilots and control tower. Looked like you were lined up for charlie there. United 1, air canada flew directly over. Yeah. I saw that pilot. Reporter this 40 year pilot and blogger believes the pilot was confused by the summer closure thats shifted operations over to the bay side of the airport. What was unusual is that two a left has been closed all summer. Normally there would be no aircraft on taxiway charlie except because of the closure they had to wrap themselves further around which put them on a taxiway that normally isnt used and the lights of the aircraft probably gap to look a little bit like a run began to look a little bit like a runway. Reporter max said air canada got as low as 175 feet off the ground and a 1 2 mile away before pulling up. Its going to be about 11 seconds across eight football fields that aircraft would have touched down on top of those airplanes. Reporter now the ntsb has taken charge of the investigation along with the faa trying to figure out what went wrong on late friday night and how to prevent it from happening in the future.
