bracing for a new round of potentially violent protests. rrow's live from the cbs bay area studios this is kpix5 news. tonight a bay area city bracing for potentially a new round of violent protests and police expect tomorrow's protests to be bigger than this one. good evening. i'm veronica de la cruz. liz is on assignment tonight. >> i'm ken bastida. berkeley police are not taking any chances tonight. christin ayers reports they are telling people leave your axes and shields at home. >> reporter: by 10 a.m. tomorrow this park is expected to be full of protesters, counter protesters and police for what could be another violent clash over free speech. this is what it looked like the last time there was a pro trump rally in berkeley civic center park. a series of bloody brawls between conservatives and liberals. today the men who organized that -- man who organized that rally, rich black, was back in berkeley flanked by what appeared to be bodyguards getting ready for what could be another explosive rally tomorrow. >> i think they're just preparing for the worst. >> reporter: marco gutierrez, a trump supporter, was there march 4th when the protests turned violent. he's convinced this time will be different but admitted . >> there's a few people out there that are definitely feeling they're coming here to do some kind of a fight. >> reporter: benjamin lynch is organizing a counter protest and says his group of protesters will defend themselves. >> when they come down here with weapons, with bats, with knives to attack people that don't believe in what they believe to bring their hate into our community, we're not having that here. >> reporter: tonight the city of berkeley released a long list of items banned from the rally including baseball bats, poles, glass bottles, pepper sprays, knives. a member of the berkeley college republicans told us the group has been targeted repeatedly with graffiti reading behead the bcrs and kill bcr. >> this is the same targeted harassment we see almost weekly and we don't think the university takes them seriously. >> reporter: for tomorrow's rally both sides insist the last thing they want is violence. >> i thought that we come together and we try to reason out all this and see that we all want the same thing. we want freedom of speech. >> reporter: in berkeley christin ayers, kpix5. a mystery glitch has disrupted b.a.r.t. service all night long in the east bay. there is some electrical issue on the tracks, but b.a.r.t. still hasn't been able to pinpoint the exact root of the problem. right now passengers have to take shuttle trains between the north concord and pittsburg point bay stations. at north concord people have to get off the regular trains in san francisco and get on board shorter trains. electrical service was knocked out in 22 cars. b.a.r.t. man testing trains in the last hour to -- has been testing trains in the last hour to see if the issue has been fixed or not. >> you have too much power going into the system and creates an arc and burns out one of the components. so you've got a five-car train that is drawing less power and less susceptible to have these types of programs. >> over a year ago b.a.r.t. had similar problems near north concord and also west oakland. power spikes knocked cars out of service. b.a.r.t. will run shuttle trains through the rest of the night and hopes to have the electrical issue fixed by tomorrow morning. a suspected drunk driver killed a mother and daughter on their way home from church. the deadly crash happened late last night on great america parkway near highway 101 in san jose. kpix5's andria borba is there tonight. >> reporter: minutes after leaving holy thursday mass at our lady of peace catholic church, the most holy week on the christian calendar ended in tragedy for the bontilao family of san jose. these skid marks show where a suspected drunk driver plowed into a subaru killing 61-year- old carina bone it i whether or not and her -- bontilao and her mother 72-year-old bontilao. >> it hit the raised median causing the vehicle to go out of control. >> reporter: the driver vinod bonthu slammed head on into the subaru. >> he pretty much lost control. >> reporter: the chp said this is clear it was the a case of poor skills behind -- this was not a case of poor skills behind the wheel. bonthu is under arrest for driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter and was hospitalized with major injuries. the bontilao family tells kpix5 they have called san jose home for years. their mother was known as the grandmother of grandmothers. two other members of the bontilao family in that subaru remain in the hospital tonight with injuries. tonight a break in ail san jose homicide, these -- a san jose homicide, these three member booked into the clair -- men booked into the santa clara jail. police believe they were responsible for a shooting of a man on january 31st, no details yet on the motive. it is saturday in north korea and the most important holiday of the year there and there is concern tonight that the unpredictable dictator kim jong un could use the occasion to flex his military muscle and conduct another nuclear test. here's kpix5's betty yu. >> reporter: wearing a black suit and white shirt north korean dictator kim jong un stepped out of a limousine, saluted his honor guard and presided over this massive military parade in pyongyang. the day of the sun marks the birthday of his late grandfather, the communist country's founder. the government could also launch missile and nuclear tests in defiance of the united states. >> the nuclear test will take place at a time and place as the supreme leadership deals necessary. >> reporter: -- demesnes. >> reporter: north korea's vice minister said his country is ready to strike first if provoked. >> if the u.s. comes up with a dangerous military option, then the first card is in our hands. we'll deal with it with our preemptive strike. this means war. >> reporter: tensions started to escalate since north korea started testing nuclear and ballistic missiles. north korea staged four ballistic missile tests this year. now a u.s. navy strike group is making its way to the region. a military official said the u.s. does not intend to use force against north korea unless the country targets another. betty yu, kpix5. >> vice president mike pence is heading to south korea tomorrow. with united in hot water tonight delta is now upping theante big time to get customers to give up their seats on overbooked flights. cbs5's emily turner is live tonight to explain. >> reporter: it all comes down to money. just how much would you take to get off of a flight you really wanted to be on? well, everyone has a price and on delta that price is pretty high. >> no. this is wrong. oh, my god! >> reporter: whether it was this shocking video or the backlash that followed delta has decided it doesn't want any part of it. the major airline announced today it's changing its poll of when -- its policy when bumping passengers, something travel blogger chris mcguiness says has been a big issue with travelers and bloggers alike. >> i think it's great the airline responded to what happened and they're actually making a change. >> reporter: in an effort to involve involuntary bumping like what happened on united's situation delta is upping payouts for those who offer to take a later flight. >> as a paying customer you should have the choice. >> reporter: would you get off a flight for almost 10,000? >> yes, i would. >> reporter: not a question in your mind? >> no. >> reporter: now that could happen. gate agents are now authorized to offer $2,000 for those willing to give up their seat up from 800 and supervisor's offers skyrocketed going from someone thousand 50 to 9,900 -- from 1,350 to 9,950-dollars, although that will be -- $9,950, although that will be a rare situation. >> i don't think there will be people getting $10,000 from delta when people will accept much lower offers than that. >> reporter: whether it's a pr move or an attempt to avoid united's situation, it's unknown. >> i think it's pretty good incentive. i heard someone say today they have the right to bump whoever they want. so you have to get off. you might as well get $10,000 to do it. so works for me. >> reporter: in the wake of all this united has made its own policy changes as well when they have to bump people off of flights in order to get their people on them. they say those changes have (vo) love. it's what makes a subaru, a subaru. he's been targeted by the same man twice. the first a san francisco man is baffled by a bizarre home break- in. he has been targeted by the same man twice. the first time the intruder showed up with a bottle of jagermeister. kpix5's susie steimle spoke to the victim who says what's even stranger than that is what police told him to do. >> i just got back in my house. >> reporter: to say that pavan gupta had a strange night last friday would be an understatement. his snapchat tells the whole story. >> i got this crazy guy who is on my balcony living in my house. >> reporter: he came home to find a man he didn't know had barricaded himself inside his twin peaks home. >> he came up to the window holding a bottle of jagermeister next to his face and he starts screaming. >> reporter: that's when pavan called police. things got stranger from there. >> he goes to my room like he's dancing around completely naked for hours. >> reporter: we now know the suspect is 22-year-old nicholas davis. he didn't threaten, harm or steal anything, but he did refuse to come out after 10 hours. police arrested davis for unlawful entry and resisting arrest and released him wednesday night and it all started back up again. >> he goes straight back to my house, 3:00 in the morning he starts banging on the door. >> reporter: pavan said he called police the next morning and they told him he has the right to use force if he deems it necessary. >> i don't appreciate the idea of shooting people that come to my house. that's absolute madness. >> reporter: the suspect in this case, nicholas davis, is facing two misdemeanor charges for the break-ins that took place at this location and a felony charge for the break-in and burglaries that took place on divisadero. he's due in court monday. in san francisco susie steimle, kpix5. some people in san jose are on a hunger strike tonight and the cause is to help renters facing eviction. four people are on liquid diets outside city cal from a group called the -- hall from a group called the renters rights coalition. they say landlords in san jose often evict people without reasonable cause. >> what we find this year is the same type of lack of prioritization for the housing crisis and so as part of the coalition we decided to bring the housing crisis to the front steps, so to speak. >> the city council will take up rental housing issues at its next meeting on tuesday. maybe you've noticed. leafy greens are in short supply in some bay area grocery stores. reporter lisa meadows explains what's behind the lettuce shortage. >> reporter: if you're a big fan of salads, blts or anything avocado, you won't be a big fan of the latest news on fresh veggie prices. >> the prices right now you'll see sticker shock, more than twice the price what it should be this time of year. >> reporter: and we are talking a lot of different vegetables. >> iceberg lettuce, leaf lettuce, red leaf, butter leaf, green leaf, romaine, cue kimberlys, eggplants, green -- cucumbers, eggplants, green beans. row crop vegetables. >> reporter: local restaurants may see the cost of their fresh vegetables almost double in price. the culprit? the wet weather. >> all because of the rain, not last week or last month, but the rain three months ago. three months ago we should have been planting crops we should harvest now. we can't harvest those crops because they weren't planted. >> reporter: not only may you end up buying these foods for twice the price, what you are getting may not be all that good. >> when you find really high prices of farm goods out there, they'll put any head of lettuce they see in the box. >> that was lisa meadows reporting. sad news tonight from the san francisco zoo, the zoo's only polar bear has died. uulu suffered from congestive heart failure. she was 36 years old and weighed 545 pounds. the zoo rescued her when she was 3 years old. despite her death the zoo continues its plans to build a new polar bear facility on the west end of the property. tonight a baseball hall of famer is making a surprising revelation about the man who saved his life. a former football player for stanford and the nfl. here's reporter steve hartman. >> reporter: when pro football player conrad bruland was hospitalized with a brain aneurysm last november, he took it as a sign. he texted his mom from the hospital. god has something big in store for me. i can't wait to see where his will takes me, but a few hours later the aneurysm ruptured. >> i couldn't leave him. >> reporter: his parents mary and ralph raced to his side. >> i had my right ear on his chest and talked to him and laid down all day and listened to his heartbeat all day long. >> reporter: but her son was brain dead at 29. if this was god's plan, it sure felt like an awful one. >> when we left, i said whoever gets his heart better deserve it. >> i had a massive heart attack. one paramedic had the paddles in his hand, come on, we're losing him, we're losing! >> reporter: you heard that? >> yeah. and then i was gone. >> reporter: this is rod carew. even if you're barely a baseball fan, you know the name. >> these are all the titles. >> reporter: long before that massive heart attack landed him on the transplant list this hall of famer played for the minnesota twins and california angels. along the way he earned a reputation for being great with kids including one wide eyed boy named conrad ruland. >> he gets in the car, big eyes, about 11, maybe 12 and he's saying mom, mommy, i met rod carew today. he's a pro athlete. i want to be a pro athlete and the rest of the day that's all he talked about was meeting rod carew. >> reporter: they only met that once, but these two professional athletes are now inseparable because a few months before he died conrad checked the organ donor box on his driver's license and the man who received his organ that saved his life was rod carew. >> you're part of our family now. >> yes, forever. >> reporter: the two families got together recently. >> i'm going to ask mom to listen to his heart and tell me how beautiful it sounds. >> that was really cathartic for me to be able to hear it again. >> reporter: every heartbeat is unique and she said this is unquestionably conrad's. the two families now plan to team up to tuesday rod and conrad's celebrity to promote the american heart association and to encourage many more people to become organ donors. >> whatever, if we can save a life and that means including conrad now, you know. wherever i go, he's going to be there. >> reporter: when conrad sent his mom that text saying he felt like god still had a plan for him, he obviously thought he would go on living and now we know. he will. steve hartman on the road in orange county, california. all this rain we received all winter long into the spring has helped out our drought. it is gone. take a look at how much water is in our reservoirs now. 22million-acre feet, if you add up every reservoir in the state of california running 12% above average. translate that to gallons. it's a lot of water, 7.3 trillion gallons of water today in california's reservoirs. napa tonight 44 degrees, vallejo 43, another night in the 30s in sonoma county, santa rosa 39, san jose tomorrow morning 45 degrees when you wake up, 48 in san francisco. eastern parade this weekend union street in san francisco. i wish it was saturday. of course, easter is sunday when the parade is and there will be showers around especially in the afternoon. we have a weather change coming. the weather change today was less wind, more sunshine, mild early because of this ridge of high pressure. it hangs out about 24 more hours before this guy moves through and shoves that ridge out of the way, cloud cover tomorrow afternoon and rain moving in by sunday. futurecast says tomorrow morning sunny, tomorrow afternoon clouds moving in. by sunday morning your sunrise church services will be cloudy but dry. by afternoon or late morning, 11:00, a few light showers for the north bay. the rest of us get a chance of scattered showers early afternoon. by dinner time the rain is gone, not looking at much rain but scattered showers around on easter sunday. tomorrow is a great day to get outside. in the north bay sunday morning the rain could begin as early as 9 a.m. for the rest of the bay area showers could begin as early as 11 a.m. let's enjoy tomorrow. oakland 67 degrees, sunshine, napa close to 70. san jose will hit 71, livermore 71, san francisco sunshine and 66 degrees. showers mainly in the early afternoon sunday, another round of light rain monday night and the weather system passes by mainly to the north on wednesday. if i could extend this forecast out two weekends from now, i probably would put in some 80s. i think it's going to get seriously warm about seven to 10 days from now. cross our fingers. >> you're making up. >> we're going to try all summer long. >> thanks, paul. down go the domino's, tonight the world record attempt in san jose. >> and here are tonight's guest on the late show with stephen colbert. ,,,,,,,,,, st shattered in the so >> closed captioning for this newscast is sponsored by living spaces. an interesting state record shattered in the south bay today. >> yes. it involved lots of dominoes. take a look at this. that is more than 25,000 of them. a group of young men spent the past three days setting them up inside the children's discovery museum in san jose and they finally set them into motion this afternoon. the previous state record was 15,000 dominoes set by the same team back in january. >> group of young men with a lot of time on their hands. >> yes. >> so why not?
