with the fbi over a new e-mail investigation. good evening. i'm elizabeth cook. >> i'm ken bastida. just days before the election the feds drop a bombshell. the fbi has reopened the criminal investigation into clinton's e-mail scandal. veronica de la cruz tells us the feds uncovered new e-mails during a sexting investigation. veronica? >> the fbi won't say what's in those e-mails. director james comey admits he doesn't know himself, but the presidential nominee insists that she has nothing to hide. it was nearly four months ago that fbi director james comey cleared hillary clinton of any criminal wrongdoing for using a personal e-mail server while she was secretary of state, but today comey sent a three paragraph letter to congress writing, "agents on an unrelated case had learned of the existence of e-mails that appear to be pertinent to the clinton investigation." >> we are calling on the fbi to release all the information that it has, even director comey noted that this new information may not be significant. so let's get it out. >> cbs news has learned the investigation involved former new york congressman anthony weiner, estranged husband of long time clinton aide huma abedin. the fbi confiscated a laptop the two shared. separately wean -- weiner is under investigation for allegedly sending sexually explicit messages to a 15-year- old girl in north carolina. >> so what he's saying is i may have seen something that may be pertinent. i can't tell you. >> the investigation is the biggest political scandal since watergate and it's everybody's hope timing is clearly very unfortunate. we saw hillary clinton extremely upset of this -- upset this is happening 11 days before the election, but director comey said if i was accused of holding this information until after the election, then it would be a real scandal and indefensible. >> comey said he also felt obligated to let congress know about the new e-mail since he previously testified that the case was closed. breaking news, there's been another freeway shooting on 580, this time in richmond near marina bay parkway. it happened after 8:00. westbound lanes were briefly shut down. we don't know yet if the bullets hit anyone or struck any cars. ir sho .. near bath and breaking news in san jose tonight, two people were stabbed this evening inside the valley fair shopping center. he's l. the other pe it was near bath and body works about 8:00. one man was stabbed in the back. he is in the hospital tonight. the other person suffered a superficial wound. two groups of young people got into a fight police say. >> the mall was open full of people. i walked in there to take a look at it and it was packed. >> five suspects ran out of the mall into the joining neighborhood. officers quickly chased them down and arrested them. police were confident they found everyone involved, so the mall reopened. in the east bay a prominent attorney was shot to death on his own front porch while his wife was inside. tonight his killer is still on the loose. christin ayers talked to a relative who said the father of four had no known enemies. >> reporter: tonight neighbors left flowers on the doorstep of a prominent el cerrito lawyer. police say jim gilliland, a partner at kilpatrick, townsend and stockton, in san francisco was walking up to his house after leaving a social event last night. someone opened fire around 8:45 killing him on his front porch while his wife was home. >> i heard pow pow, pow pow pow. it was two and then three really fast and we both looked at each other and said that's got to be gunfire. >> reporter: they had been on the block mere minutes before the shooting and saw something suspicious near jim's house. >> there was like a dark colored suv parked the wrong way on the road. as you were driving up, its headlights were toward us. >> reporter: police are also exploring other leads. >> there was a white car seen leaving right around this time and someone also thinks they saw somebody running in the block. >> reporter: tonight jim's family members did not want to talk about the murder. a sign on their door referred questions to police. neighbors told us the family ask they not speak about the murder out of respect. one man said this is an area where murders simply do not happen. >> i'm surprised that something like this would happen here. it's unfortunate. i'm just appalled. >> reporter: appalled and on edge. tonight a volunteer security team is patrolling the neighborhood. police are asking for the public's help while the 5 tonight andria borba shows us from ft. funston in san francisco. >> reporter: pounding the coast of california the surf is rhythmic, hypnotic and one of several problems as constant as the waves, erosion. >> the problem is we don't have good measurements of that. >> reporter: jonathan rogge is a research geologist studying the effects of erosion on the 100-foot cliff around ft. funston, but getting good measurements is tricky. >> it's always difficult trying to measure a cliff. you wouldn't do that with a survey rod. it's too dangerous. >> reporter: that's why the california coastal records projects comes in. kenneth and gabriel adelman have been taking aerial photos of the coastline for years. >> these photos were taken with lots of overhappen one after another after another. >> reporter: like -- overlap one after another after another. >> reporter: like these taken in 2004 which show this landslide and combined with the granite the usgs can combine them and get more information then otherwise wouldn't. there's plenty of anecdotal evidence at ft. funston. how much erosion is there? see the structures in the sand? they used to be on clifftops, but now the usgs has actual numbers to match with the scenery. >> measurements are critical for understanding both the rates of erosion currently and also projecting to the future. >> reporter: andria borba, kpix5. plane. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: they used the plane slides to evacuate as emergency crews rushed to put out the flames. >> it was a big ball of red flames blew up from that window. that's all i can tell you. iago the out of there as fast as i can. >> reporter: the boeing 767 was leaving chicago -- i got out of there as fast as i can. >> reporter: the being 767 was leaving chicago to miami -- the the ntsb is sending investigators. allen martin, kpix5. in florida first there was smoke, then this fell -- fedex plane exploded in ft. lauderdale, no word on the cause. both pilots escaped and are okay. an arson spree in san francisco's chinatown may be over tonight. 56-year-old michael devito was arrested for allegedly setting a fire in a doorway of a building. an atm, recycling bin, piles of trash have all been torched always at night when no one is around. police are now trying to determine if devito had anything to do with the rest of those fires. there's a problem with the mail in berkeley and why a trip to the mail now requires a flashlight. liz? >> reporter: some people told me they aren't getting their mail deliveries until midnight and this problem has gone on for weeks. >> i just distinguish they would deliver my mail on time. that's really all i want. >> reporter: bonnie malikki works from home as a bookkeeper and relies on usps for business, but lately her mail hasn't been showing up on time, if at all. >> i can't get my work done with the mail that's supposed to come to me. >> reporter: the postal service admits there are delivery issues in berkeley and other bay area cities. what's going on? a combination of a spike in online shopping and not enough mail carriers. right now there are about 163 mail carriers assigned to berkeley up 12 from last year, but it's still not enough. usps says it plans to hire 19 more to try to keep up with the influx of deliveries. >> we fool once we bring on the additional 19 employees we currently need -- feel once we bring on the additional 19 employees we currently need to hire for berkeley, we'll see mail delivered in the prescribed time. >> reporter: some have worked double shifts. >> there needs to be more funding from the feds for our postal service. this is a basic service, but they take it out on the laborers. i feel it's not right. i feel very sorry for the letter carriers. >> reporter: tonight usps tells us on average a mail carrier will deliver to at least 500 addresses a day. cate cauguiran, kpix5. theory tonight about the blue whale washed up near thornton beach in daly city this week, it was hit by a ship. marine biologists performed a knee crop ski. research -- necropsy. researchers say the animal had multiple fractures to its skull and back indicating blunt force trauma consistent with being hit by a large vessel. the whale was 65 feet long, a male. scientists plan to take more samples before they make a final determination. if you've been up to the sierra lately, you've probably noticed dead trees are everywhere. they're victims of a tiny killer clearing a path across california and wilson walker explains only on 5 all the rain we're getting could make it worse. >> it's not just like the fall colors on the east coast. these are trees that are dying, trees that were dead. this is pretty early on, still have needles on the tree. >> reporter: deep in the stanislas national forest entomologist sherry smith is following a killer no larger than a grain of rice. >> for native bark beetles in california drought is the trigger. you can see the tunneling. >> reporter: the beetles are clear cutting their way through pine forest all the way down through southern california. >> there were so many bugs you'd see a tree, it looked like it had been shot with a shotgun. >> reporter: the state's tree problems don't end with bark beetles. >> in 2008 when i was in this exact location, you couldn't see any sky. >> reporter: she's watched sudden oak death spread from monterey county up the coast. >> it looks rather innocuous. this is what the disease looks like. >> reporter: the tips of the leaves the oaks turn brown before falling gray to the forest floor. >> the denseness is a chronic issue. >> reporter: bark beetles, disease, too much density on the forest floor. any single one of these things can cause trouble for a tree or forest, but when you add them together insultly with the fuel of a -- simultaneously with the fuel of a four year drought, you're talking about something that's nothing but a tree disaster and it now covers a large swath of california. >> we've estimated about 66 million statewide. >> reporter: 66 million dead trees, the worst in the bark beetle explosion in the foothills where thousands of acres every single pine tree has died. >> pretty much in here it's almost 100% mortality of the ponderosa pine. >> reporter: back in kern county forresters are trying to keep the dead trees from causing another disaster in the form of an explosive fire and that means homeowners are responsible for bringing the trees down as their property values fall right along with them. >> it's a real problem getting rid of the trees without going broke doing it. >> reporter: then there's an even larger price for all of us as utility crews with caltrans race to keep dead trees off the power lines and roadways. as for the future, even some drought relief might make some problems worse. >> it's coursing through the water and landscape. >> reporter: while a healthy rain season would slow the beetles, sudden oak death thrives in moisture. >> it's waiting for the ripe conditions and it will have explosive growth again. >> reporter: it's a statewide catastrophe that has only intensified the debate over how california's forest strategy should evolve, but for tens of millions of trees, the damage is done and recovery will take decades. for some areas the worst may still lie ahead as california tries town tangle a crisis now unfolding across 32 million acres of forest land. >> we keep passing the buck really and it gets harder to have enough resources to solve the problem. >> reporter: wilson walker, kpix5. >> dry out there for how many years and that causes the forest to do what it's doing now try to rejuvenate itself. one year it's bad, four years in a row is a significant problem. bark beetle loves drought. let's hope we can put an end to that part of the issue. one storm moving out, another storm poised to move in up toward eureka. tomorrow night and sunday morning there it is, heading towards eureka, heavy rainfall falling in your backyard in the not too distant future. right now cloudy skies, still humid and mild, livermore and san francisco 62, 64 in both san jose and oakland, concord 63, santa rosa 59 degrees. the storm gave us about an inch of rainfall throughout much of the bay area. that storm is over now. montana, man, that moved out quickly hopping aboard the jet stream. the next storm is poised to move in very quickly the leading edge off the northwest california coast line. here comes the next storm. in between mainly dry day tomorrow, not completely. futurecast paints a mostly cloudy moderate temperatures, mid-60s, but scattered showers here and there. we'll call it mostly dry tomorrow. rainfall sunday, most of it falling between midnight tomorrow night and lunchtime sunday, another 1/2 inch in the south bay, another inch or 2 for the santa cruz mountains, san francisco, san mateo county an inch of in the east bay 1 or 2 inches of additional rain. 7:00 to 9:00 in the morning the heaviest rain slicing through the bay area. sunday afternoon plans, things look better, just scattered showers by sunday afternoon. now to the change. that's halloween monday 5:00, the third wave of rain will likely get here earlier. i just changed the forecast. looks like it will be showery for the trick-or-treaters monday evening. highs tomorrow, free mon 70, ra lay -- fremont 70, vallejo 60's, only a shower o -- 66, only a shower or two. by monday things clear out. monday evening and tuesday and thursday maybe showery as well. all of a sudden we are right in the rainy season, not a problem.
