Live from the cbs bay area studios this is kpix5 news. Shot. Breaking news, right now a Massive Police presence in a bay area neighborhood after a Police Officer is shot. The gunfire erupted in San Franciscos taravell district near sloat boulevard a couple of hours ago. Cate cauguiran has the latest. Reporter we are live at 26th and vicente where police apprehended the suspect. We were also here when San Francisco police s. W. A. T. Team deployed what they called nonlethal flash bangs to try to get that is, but well give you a get the suspect, but well give you a closer look at the scene right now. Officers have put down flares to keep people out because this is still a crime scene. Look at this video a witness took. You can see one person sitting down with a bandage on his forehead. We cannot confirm who that person is, if that, in fact, is the injured officer, but what we do know is the shooting happened before 8 30 tonight near a luckys supermarket at sloat and everglade drive. Quickly after San Francisco Police Officers set up a wide perimeter. We saw dozens, if not 100 of officers scouring the area, and we got a chance to talk to a witness who heard the initial shot. I heard gunshots and officer down. We didnt know who was down, so we stayed in to be safe. I saw the cop running i guess towards the suspect and he was limping. Reporter it was said in a statement this started when the injured officer was responding to a call about a mentally disturbed person. Back out live here at 26th and vicente, an active crime scene and several hours still here, one officer injured, but the suspect is in custody. We are live in San Francisco. Ken, back to you. I just want to ask you did that area right there, i know theres a playground there. Theres a parking lot there. Is that where the investigation is going on right now . Reporter yeah, that is correct, ken. The investigation very much still an active investigation because this is where they chased the suspect to this area. So its still blocked off. I know that police have been leaving the scene very slowly, but again still an active crime scene. Cate cauguiran in San Francisco, thank you. Kpix5s susie stimel is at sf general tonight with that part of our story. Reporter we know that a couple higherups in the city including the mayor has been in the hospital with this Police Officer who is wounded. We have mayor ed lee with us now. Can you tell us what was the feeling like inside the hospital . Im down here with command staff with the president of our Police Commission and our fire chief and had a chance to meet with the officer that was shot, one of our young officers. He sounded like he was alert. I know hes in Critical Condition. Ill have the doctors kind of give you his prognosis, but he was able to communicate with me and i had a chance to thank him for his service and met family members as well who are with him now. Dont have any other circumstances but to say this hes one of our young officers and that hes one of our young officers and i must say im grateful to our Police Department every single day for everybody, everything that they do. We have a great hospital here, so hes going to be taken care of and also glad to hear that the suspect was apprehended. I dont have any details about that person or condition that hes in, but i know i have a goo feeling that our officer will recover. Reporter and this young man was alert and talking . Yes, he was. Reporter what did he say to you . He certainly had the respect of meeting me as mr. Mayor. I told him you just got shot. What are you calling me sir for . So he was in good spirits, but again these things are critical and ill let the doctors speak to his condition, but im very grateful to him and to every officer. Reporter whats the message from the city when Something Like this happens . I think we come together and have demonstration of that tonight. I also want to be thankful for this hospital because everyone is alert working at their highest level to make sure this man can recover and im thankful that we have a good Police Department that knows what its doing, but also has these sacrifices and these moments that we are all very concerned about. Reporter mr. Mayor, thank you so much for speaking with us. We do know that we got a statement from the Police Officers association and that was from the president who said this brave officer was just doing his job. For his courage he deserves all our gratitude and respect. Please keep him in your prayers tonight. He is certainly within the thoughts of city leaders. Kpix5s andria borba is there tonight. What can you tell us . Reporter we just got briefed about five minutes ago by sffd. Im at the corner of sloat and everglade. This started around 8 15 in the afternoon on the backside of luckys, a very busy shopping center. We were told it was very busy at that time. One man heard three gunshots and looked out his side window to see one man on the ground and another man running. Were told there were four Police Officers that responded to the scene. The witness we spoke with says he saw this officer get put into an ambulance. He looked injured, but he looked like he was going to survive. He looked like he was conscious, you know. Reporter you said his head was bandaged . When i looked outside, yes, his head was bandaged, but he looked like he knew where he was. So thats a good sign. Reporter again we spoke with sfpd a short time ago and they say that this officer is very, very lucky tonight. You heard that witness say the officer had his head bandaged. Here is sfpd officer carlos manfredi. He is very, very lucky. Were very fortunate hes going to survive. As you can tell, a 1 2 inch closer and we would be telling a different story right now. Reporter were back out here live. Were told after the shooting happened at 8 15 there was a short foot chase and then the suspect made his way inside fern grove. Officers threw in flash bangs as a tactical diversion to get to the suspect, but he suddenly emerged from the bushes. Officers as you can see behind me have cleared the area since that suspect now is in custody, but we do have some video from the scene earlier. According to San Franciscos Police Officer association this started when one officer responded to a call about a mentally disturbed person before 8 30 near the luckys supermarket at sloat and everglades drive. Thats where the officer was shot and injured. The suspect took off prompting a massive search of the area. Officers found him near Parkside Square where we are currently located. We just learned that the suspect and officers were engaged in a shootout and that San Francisco s. W. A. T. Team deployed what they called nonlethal flash bangs to get him. We also know the suspect was shot. As for the officer injured, he was taken to San Francisco general where San Francisco police have told us that that officer is expected to be okay. Tonight officials at Santa Clara University say they busted the students who scrawled a bloody message of hate on a poster promoting campus unity. Surveillance video shows two men inside a dorm elevator last saturday. You can see one of them press his finger to his leg, then scrawl something on the wall. Turned out to be swastikas drawn in blood on an lgbt poster. The students names have not been released yet, but in a statement the schools president said the swastika is a powerful symbol of hate, one that cannot be ignored. The university is holding a forum on tuesday to discuss the incident. Tonight another woman has come forward to say that she was harassed by donald trump. The Southern California woman was a contestant on the Apprentice Television show of, but the alleged incident happen show, but the alleged incident happened after she was off that show. A photographer from Northern California was filming a routine dive when a great white suddenly swam straight into the cage. The shark was chasing some bait, couldnt stop in time. To escape they opened the hatch. The only guy more relieved to get out, the diver who came out behind him. He wasnt hurt. He stayed on the bottom of the cage. Hell probably have nightmares for life. The end of that video you sort of see him actually start breathing again because he was in such shock. My jaw was on the weather desk watching that.
