Reporter it was supposed to be a sunny day of snowshoeing on castle peak. Then 10yearold samantha got off the trail and in to trouble. It was at that time i noticed she wasnt in powder. She was actually sinking on what looked to be a partial snow bridge. Reporter with mom and dad trying to pull her out, samantha slipped in. When we looked in to the hole, all we could see was her head. I think it was scary that i was down there. Because it was dark and i could barely hear what anybody was saying. Reporter dad wailen got on the phone to 911 in truckee. One of them asked is everything okay . I said no, my daughter is trapped in this hole 10 or 15 feet down. He asked can we help . I said who are you . He said were marin county search and rescue. I said absolutely you can help. Reporter the rescuers were training and didnt have all of their gear with them and were forced to improvise, using three 50foot ropes and a karabiner to pull samantha. Shes in a snow cave 32 degrees and the water was 32 degrees. I think shes a very lucky girl. Reporter the crew had samantha back on solid ground in about 15 minutes. Then it was time to tend to her wet feet and prevent hypothermia. Im glad i had goggles on because i had tears. It was very emotional. The crews from marin county warmed up samanthas feet and gave her some of their dry clothes so she could hike out with any further risk to hypothermia. Fremont police said some fishermen found human remains near the dumbarton pier last night. The persons identity and cause of death are investigation. The mystery surrounding the death of a young san jose woman may be closer to being solved. Betty yu tells us police have a person of interest in custody. Reporter Stacey Aguilar was last seen leaving a party. She was reported missing days later. She was found over the weekend. We do have a person of interest in custody. We cannot release the name of the person until charges are actually brought with the district attorney. Reporter the missing 22yearold san jose womans death turned in to a homicide after Hayward Police found her body. Just days before her boyfriend was questioned by police and arrested for Domestic Violence against stacey. The people in this community can sleep at night, not being worried theres a murder er out on the loose. Were very confident moving forward that this person of interest is the right person. Reporter over the weekend one of the search volunteers spoke with staceys mother in mexico. She said she dont have any information. She said why this happen to my daughter . Reporter Hayward Police say they believe stacey was killed here in hayward and her body dumped in nearby fremont. They wouldnt say if her boyfriend is a suspect in her death. Her official cause of death has still not been released. In hayward, betty yu, kpix 5. Police have not said what led them to search the area where staceys body was eventually found. Tonight police say the attacks are related. This is a sketch of one of the suspects. Cops say he and two other men threatened a 17yearold girl with a weapon saturday night at around 8 00, grabbed her purse, and took off in a silver suv. The next night a 63yearold woman was attacked the same way. The suspects also took off in an suv. The mall has since increased security. Pretty heated meeting tonight in san mateo over Affordable Housing and a 97yearold woman whos being evicted. Cate cauguiran reports on how the county is dealing with skyrocketing rents. Congresswoman jackie speer and top county officials listened to the struggle of renters evicted and landlords trying to pay their own bills. A black student at san jose state says he lived a threemonth nightmare. Tonight his three former roommates are facing jail time. But not for a hate crime. In 2013 the defendants, who are white, clamped a bike lock around their roommates neck. They also used several racial slurs and put up a Confederate Flag in their dorm room. The three were convicted of misdemeanor battery but the jury deadlocked on hate crime charges for two of them and found the third defendant not guilty. Hate crimes are also challenging cases to prove because you have to prove what was going on in someones minds when they were committing a certain act. The jury had a lot of issues with regard to whether this was a hate crime. The jury said the incidents happened at different times, its hard to say there was intent. The three former students face six months in jail. When kunts found when students found out about the crime, it sparked these protests. The School Started an action plan. A student covering the case for the School Newspaper says there may be protests over the verdict. An ugly display of sportsmanship over the weekend in San Francisco, or rather a lack thereof. Police are looking for a Soccer Player tonight who punched out a referee in ocean view. Police say the ref gave the player a yellow card. The player then argued the call and was ejected. Police say the player came up from behind and punched the ref in the jaw. The referee has a brain injury and broken jaw. This is really severe for just a soccer game. If youre a fanatic at the sport, thats one thing. But to assault the referee and take your aggressions out because of a call he made, thats a crime. The assailant then ran off to his truck and left. And police say they have lots of witnesses and it is only a matter of time before they catch this guy. Some birds mysteriously showing up covered in oil along the Northern California coast. Tonight Christin Ayers says it can be traced to a ship that sank more than 60 years ago. Reporter its called a redneck grebe. Someone spotted the bird emaciated and coated in oil. One of nine exposed birds thats arrived here at International Bird rescue in fairfield. Jd bergeron says there were clues about where the oil came from.
