We were shocked to learn theyre getting a thousand of these calls a day. The waste of time and resources is no joke. 911, hello . Reporter that is the sound of a pants cost epidemic. 911 operators take 3600 calls a day. Four years ago, the number was 2600. The city partnered with google to determine the discrepancy. We get a lot more open line dials, which people like to refer to always butt dials. Reporter in San Francisco, the average is 1,000 butt dials a day. While the phrase is funny, the real world implication for dispatchers are no joke. We treat every call coming into 911 seriously, and if we cant get ahold of the person on the original call, well call back. Reporter that call back and questioning takes two minutes. 911, San Francisco. Hello . Reporter if spatchers hear anything that sounds like distress on the line, the urgency to figure out what is going on is bumped up. Sometimes call the mobile provider and try and triangulate where the phone is from. Reporter eating up 15 minutes of time, instead of helping folks with an actual emergency. Hear all sorts of things. Reporter the number of butt dials is no laughing matter. In the ten minutes we were shooting inside the call center, we captured at least four incidents of dispatchers talking to someones thigh. Its happening all over the valley, in neighborhoods built when land was plentiful, cheap. And on toyen road in san jose, a large front yard is split in two, with two new homes coming. There are lots out there, that are 30, 40,000 square foot lots.
