Live, from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news. Golden gate bridge workers threw up their hands in celebration tonight as the final piece of the new movement median was wedged into place. Workers completed the heavy lifting but Christian Hartnett says there is more work to do tonight. He is live at the bridge. Reporter thats right. It will be a busy night for crews working on the bridge. When it is all done, it will be a safer drive over the bridge but drivers but one that may take some getting used to. The work began early and the spectacle drew quite a crowd. This is great. This is exciting. No cars, this is quiet. It is a once in a lifetime experience. Reporter many of the onlookers looking forward to the soon to be new look and feel of their daily commute. It will improve safety a lot. Reporter crews didnt waste any time. Aerial footage shows the workers laying down the last piece of the barrier around 6 00 this evening. A productive first day of work. The bridge district says an earlier opening than the originally planned 4 00 a. M. Time monday is a possibility. The barrier is made of a combination of steel and high density concrete and take away half a foot of space from only the inside lanes. The others will remain unchanged at ten feet wide. People should go slow, but if you follow the speed limit, stay in your lane, it should be similar to what it is now and the feel should be similar to the feel now. Reporter so tonight, crews will be running a machine over the barrier to make sure it is aligned properly and they will need to stripe the lanes at either end of the bridge, we will know around noon if the project will be completed early. The only part a little difficult was around 5 30, 6 30 this afternoon. The Richmond Bridge also very light traffic tonight. Many others have been opting for the ferries. There was a large crowd on this crossing from sausalito. The golden gate ferry is doing extra runs all weekend. You may even see Brian Hackney on the ferry. Despite the crowds, passengers have had no complaints. We havent done it before, but we are going to do it again. Best way to go. We loved it. Sausalito service has now ended for the night. The last sailing to lark spur will be at 1 10 00 a. M. Cyclists and pedestrians are allowed to use the eastern sidewalk on the golden gate and they all stopped to check out the action. They are working to verify the make and model of a car seen speeding away from a shooting scene but they are not even sure if it is related to a homicide. The brothers let him go after an hour, then holed up inside for six hours before they were killed after they opened fire on police. He said he is happy to be alive, but was never scared because the gunmen were respectful. He kept himself calm by diverting their attention away from a colleague who was hiding nearby.
