But if liccardo is elected mayor. Keep in mind this is a referendum on current mayor chuck reed. That is a sign that the people agree with the current mayoral administration. Live in san jose, mark kelly, kpix5. Thanks mark. We are going to take a look at liccardos key enforcements. The San Jose Mercury news. Mayor chuck reed is one of his big backers. Former mayor susan hammer as well. And who was supporting dave cortese. The firefighters and the santa clara democratic county party. Police and firefighters have pulled no punch in the race. They really want cortese. Reporter thats right liz. We have also heard that a lot of police and firefighters plan to leave the city if mr. Liccardo is elected mayor. That is how high the stakes are in this election here tonight. And we have just had a little bit of excitement. Let me tell you what has been going on here. They have a computer here posting some numbers and it was just updated a few minutes ago showing 126 of 495 precincts now. According to the computer in this room, dave cortese is chipping away ever so slightly at the lead that sam liccardo had. Mr. Liccardo at 50. 85 with cortese inching up just a little bit. Mr. Cortese is. Now mr. Cortese came into the room at about 9 00 this evening and spoke to his supporters. He had a lot of people waiting for him here in the room. Mr. Cortese told people, though, this was going to be a close race. And a very long night waiting for the results. Together, we created a campaign that really the the city of san jose. It is not a campaign about electing someone mayor. It wasnt and hasnt been a campaign about a certain special interest in san jose. This campaign has been about putting together a movement that represents what san jose is, and the extraordinary possibility that it can be. Reporter now folks here at the cortese party are expecting a come from behind victory. They are hoping for a come from behind victory. They said in the early kpix5 poll last week, that showed that mr. Liccardo and mr. Cortese were virtually tied with the early voters but the people who would be turning in the ballots later indicated to the pollster they would favor mr. Cortese by seven points. If that polling holds up, then there will be a come from behind victory for mr. Cortese at this point. Still too close to say anything about the results. There has been some sort of a glitch at the registrar of voters. There is some sort of a Software Glitch that has been slowing down the results coming out here. So we have only had three updates in the past three hours. So something may be up. We will keep you posted on that. We will check in a little later. Len ramirez at the cortese campaign tonight. Phil, this is an interesting race because it is garnering national attention. Outgoing mayor chuck reed has really angered the Police Officers association. They have threatened to not back liccardo. And if liccardo is elected, they say they are going to leave. A lot of unions around the country were interested in this. There is money coming in. A couple of years back, with i had the big pension wave hit california and it crashed up against and created a lot of reforms because taxpayers couldnt flip the bill. As a result, we had a lot of cut backs and pensions. Since then, that sort of receded. They were thinking maybe we could renegotiate. This is not a mandate for either side. Nobody is walking in there with a big statement one way or the other. It is a very interesting race that is nation is watching saying what happens next with pension reform . It is a hot button issue. The city has lost 400 Police Officers who said we dont want to stay here if you wont pay us. Reporter thats right. The city says we cant pay that so we have to come up with a different compromise. That is the way it is going and the next place you might see it, in oakland and other cities as well. Very interesting. Thank you phil. Well in the south bay, district 17, mike honda is up against ro khanna. Both democrats. Mike honda is edging out his opponent with 54 . Ro khanna coming in with 46 of the vote. District 17 covers much of Santa Clara County as well as the southern part of Alameda County. It clowns the city of fremont, milpitas. We are with both candidates tonight. Linda yee is with the Honda Campaign and he just show maryland up. Reporter yeahings look who showed up behind me. It is mike honda. He has been mobbed by his supporters. We know the numbers are still too low, but he is encouraged. They are waiting to hear if he has won an eighth term. We may not know that until tomorrow sometime. He had words of encouragement for his supporters and he said it is still too early to celebrate. I feel good. I feel good because all our supporters are here. You dont see a party like this yet. This is good. This is good. But it is still early. Reporter this is going to be a close race because hondas opponent is another democrat who after the june primary had the 20point lead. But that has evaporated. This is a dead heat. Liz . Im curious, how the demographic changed in the district and how is it affecting the election . Reporter well after honda took office 12 years ago, he represented a sizable Asian American population. It has gotten even bigger. Here is how the demographics shake out. The majority of people in district 17 are now asian. That is more than 50 this is the only Asian American majority district in the United States. 27 are white, 18 are hispanic. Those are important numbers. That is why he has the support of even the national democrats. The democratic party. Because honda is able to deliver the Asian American vote in national elections. Thanks linda. Live at the Honda Campaign tonight. And you heard len ramirez a little earlier saying there were some potential problems with vote counting going on in Santa Clara County. We only have 6 of the precincts reporting in now. This was one of the most expensive congressional races in the country. Mr. Honda raised more than 3 million. Most of that from the unions. Ro khanna also raised more than 3 million. A good chunk of that from Tech Companies like google. He also wracked up endorsements from big names in Silicon Valley. Ann notarangelo is out covering the campaign. How much of a difference did the tech money make for ro khanna . Reporter he certainly had a big boost. He didnt have as much later on in the campaign though. You can see ro khanna is still here talking to his supporters. He has told them he believes they are on the verge of something remarkable but is not declaring victory yet. Ro khanna has a young inner jettic group of supporters willing to take on the establishment and what he has tried to do is frame himself as a pro business democrat. And he has gotten a lot of support from Silicon Valley as they try to unseat the seventh term incumbent. He tried to reach out to republicans and those without any Party Affiliation and he was criticized by the other camp as being too centerrist. He believes politicians want to Work Together for the people. Its a close race. We are very optimistic where we are. But it is going to go down to the wire. We started at 3 . You see the room here. We have a lot of people excited. They want to bring change to washington and i believe that will happen. Reporter so even though this is a democrat against democrat race. That has been one of the most expensive congressional races in the country and it has been one of the nastiest. But they dont believe they will have a winner declared until sometime tomorrow. Thank you ann. Two bay area cities are voting on whether to tax soda. San francisco cease prop e taxes sugary drinks by 2 cents per ounce. Measure d would add a penny per ounce. Berkeley could make history. 7 of precincts reporting. The yeses are ahead with 3 of the vote. In noes have 27 . Cate caugurian is live in berkeley tonight. Cate . Reporter well liz, right off the bat, i can give you updated numbers from that old screen. I know 25 precincts have reported and it is still a 73 in favor of measure d. As far as what is going on here, the race is too early to call. Berkeley could be the battleground or the final battleground over the war over sugary drinks. So far, the soda industry has been able to beat every similar tax opposed. But berkeley could be the biggest challenge right now. The yes campaign as you can hear behind me is receive bathing the early numbers. Change starts here. If this passes, berkeley would be the first city in the u. S. To do so. If the numbers stick, it will be a historic moment. Communities can come together for their kids health in spite of the outrageous amounts of money being spent against our interests. Reporter the no on d campaign claims the measure has too many loopholes and would raise grocery and restaurant prices. Now in order for this measure to pass here in berkeley, it would need a simple majority. Liz, back to you. Big bucks and trying to defeat the measure. Reporter that is right. Following the money, i can tell you the American Beverage Association sent 2. 2 million fighting measure d and supporters spent half a million. They say the penny per ounce tax would lead to fewer cases of obesity and diabetes. Soda is a 76 billion industry. Liz, back to you. Thanks cate. Here is a look at the numbers for San Francisco proposition e. It was 97 reporting, looks like the yeses are edging out the noes with 45 . But it needs a twothirds majority to pass. Move on. Governor jerry brown made history tonight. He easily won an unprecedented fourth term as california governor. In the end, it wasnt even close. Lets take a look now. Jerry brown with 41 is leading his challenger, Neel Kashkari, 58 to 42 . Well peter doubt is out the Governors Mansion with an update on the race. Peter . Reporter hey ken and liz. Jerry brown has made history becoming the fourth term governor. The first to get a fourth term in california history. He said he is very enthusiastic and looking forward to the forth term. The governor was so confident about getting the term, he did very little campaigning and spent more time on props 1 and 2 than his own campaign. He maintained a pretty significant lead over republican Neel Kashkari who he all but ignored. He did not start a single radio or tv spot on his own behalf. Here is what he said about the propositions he did campaign for. I spent the last several months saying save waterings save money. Those two are pillars because water is life. It is the basis of the well being and also our economy. Proposition is one is going to help us make key investments to strengthen water reliability. Reporter propositions 1 and 2 are the water bond and rainy day measures that could cement his legacy after he leaves office. At 76 years old, Governor Brown is currently the oldest serving governor in the nation and when he leaves office, he will be 80. Reporting live in sacramento, peter doubt, kpix5. Thanks for the update. When you cruise to a big win like jerry brown is, it is okay to break script in the speech. Maybe the most heartening thing ill would have to say besides being here in my wife in her new red dress she just got for this event, is the fact that one in two did pass. And one and two passed which republicans and democrats. And i will say living with him, he does wake up every single morning so enthused and energized by the job and he gives it his all. And there is no one smarter and more ethical in my mind and who has been thinking about california as long as he has and as long as his family has. Reporter Governor Brown pretty confident. There was no doubt in his mind. I thought he was going to bring the dog up. Yeah. But it is a Family Affair with Governor Brown. Ann gust his wife has been his key adviser since he was the mayor of oakland. Right there at the attorney generals office. Basically, his chief of staff an the campaign guru. We are talking a slimmed down operation here that spent, if you look at inflation, he spent less this time than he did when he got reelected this last time he got reelected. He has been around the block. Jerry brown is a phenomenon. He is a party unto himself. And he has led a democratic ticket that is sweeping the state. It is pretty amazing. Interesting that we brought this up before instead of putting his money toward the commercials promoting him. Look at what he really did. He made the came pain about water and saving money. His opponents couldnt attack him about that. He didnt talk about high speed rail or the state of schools or prison overcrowding and he didnt talk about pensions. He talked about what he wanted to talk about and he did it without even saying vote for me. You dont think politics is keeping it simple . That is how you win. It took browns challenger Neel Kashkari only about 26 minutes to concede after the polls closed. And i am really proud of the small part that we played in helping them achieve those goals and we will continue to help them. This was always about blazing a trail for the future of california, and for the future of the republican party. And more than anything, i am proud of all of you and how we Work Together to bring these issues forward. Kashkari raised more than 5 million in this race. 2million of that was his own money. That Campaign Cash paided for ads like this one this made a splash for all the wrong reasons. The kashkari campaign used a drowning kid. Remember this one . In the Swimming Pool to try to go after jerry brown on education. Most critics agreed it was the ad that sunk. Lets check back in with allen martin with new numbers on the state propositions. Allen . Reporter as we mentioned earlier, props 1 and 2 sailing to victory. Jerry brown gave 30 million to those efforts. Prop 37 is passing as well reducing prison time for someone who has been convicted of nonviolent drug crimes. Passing with 57 of the vote. Prop 45 would have given the state Veto Authority or extreme peopleup increases. Well voters opinions changed drastically. 45 being defeated with 60 of the vote. 3. 2million spent for it from the california nurses association. The Health Insurance industry fought this with 57 million going to the no campaign. Groups such as well point, kaiser, blue shield, and it paid off. And prop 46 also failing tonight. It would have authorized random drug and Alcohol Testing of doctors. It set up a Prescription Drug data base. Plenty of people found something to object to. It has been defeated tonight. More than 12 million has been in favor of prop 46. Most coming from the families of victims of preventable medical errors. 63million spent opposing it like the American Nurses association and others. Prop 48 which would allow casinos to be built in the central valley. Voters felt that unnecessary. It has lost today. A message from voter. They want to spend money to save water. They want a Rainy Day Fund as well. And allen, prop 1 is also money for earthquake Early Warning system . The money is not included but there may be a way to do it. It was one of the things approved by state legislature la sweer. But there was no money to pay for it. Not a dime. So of the 7 billion that prop 1 is authorizing, the state senator who offered the quake warning bill says it only makes sense. Use some of that money to the Warning System. Estimates are it will cost 80 million. The thought is a quake Warning System would give state agencies time to protect their warter sources before a major earthquake hits. Whether the legislature chooses to direct 80 million, that is another question. But there is one thing certain, the way the law was written, funding for the earthquake Warning System is not come from the state general fend. All right allen. Thank you. One of the hotly contested races. Oakland voters electing a new mayor. 15 people want to be mayor. The top three vote getters on your screen right now. Lets take a look. Libby schaaf with about 17 voting in. Jean quan is second at 17 of the vote. Joe tuman trailing. This is ranked Choice Voting so you vote for your top three candidates and there is a big matrix that has to go together there to try to put this all together to see who wins. We will have the results. We have Team Coverage on this race. First, want to get back to joe vasquez where libby schaaf is taking lead. Joe . Reporter ken, i got to tell you, libby schaaf is talking to a crowd right now of supporters an one of her supporters just got up on the podium and announced with 44 of the vote in, that she maintained her lead with 28 of the vote. I got to tell you, that is the exact same percentage she had at 17 , and again at 25 . So what we are seeing are some numbers that we are just not sure whether those could be completely trusted at this point. Because she is getting the exact same percentage each time these votes are updated. More on that in a moment. First, i want to tell you, it is a jubilant night for this candidate. She has been a council since 2010. She is 48 years old, a native oaklander. She is the voice of reason on an often tumultuous council. She brokered a heated disagreement over evictions but she says the key issue for her as it is for many oaklanders is crime. What will we see . More cops . It is not just that you will see more cops, but you will see better policing. And you will see a lot after attention to addressing the root causes of crime. Jobs. Better wages, and much better educationa
