In fact, this farm has 15 different varieties but this year because of the drought, you will see i less of these guys, the big guys out there on the patch and more of these. This year, more of these kinds of pumpkins will be picked and rolled out of je perry farms than in years past. I have a lot of small ones. Everybody is short on the medium and large pumpkins this year. But, you know, we did what we could under the circumstances. Reporter the drought is weighing heavily on farmers like doug perry. The water stays around the plant. Reporter he has changed the way he grows his organic pumpkins. He is using drip irrigation so the water flows directly into the roots as opposed to an all sprinkler system. Doug says he is using 60 less water this way. But it is not enough to splurge on growing gigantic pumpkins like these. It has been a tough season for growers hoping to squash records. At the famous pumpkin contest in halfmoon bay. The drought is not just affecting the size of pumpkins grown, farmers are noticing more insects attacking their crop this year. They drill holes into the flesh and thats a big problem. And i think we have seen a lot of them on kind of looking for moisture for water. Reporter the Torres Family had to settle for smaller pumpkins. We used to make a lot of them. We have a very artistic family. The fact the pumpkin is not much of a canvass anymore, it is hard to make the same creations we used to. They are also in the process of installing a new hightech watering system that uses moisture sensors to water the pumpkins. It will probably save them even more water. The other three teenagers, 15, 17, and another 17yearold are too young to publicly name but the boys are all related to each other. Two are brothers, the other is a stepbrother. Spokesman chris curtis said chatter on social media led detective to a home on west elk horn avenue behind the chicken ranch but nobody can figure out why they did it. I dont know why they did it.
