Tonight, this is the damage after an explosion and fire. Joe vasquez is in oakland tonight. Joe . Reporter and liz, you can see the effects of this explosion right here. Glass blown out of that window here in the 3500 block of brighton. And that right now, red cross workers on the scene to take care of some folks left homeless by this fire. Soon after this house on Brighton Avenue caught fire, flames began to shoot out the windows. The house next door was in serious danger of also going up in smoke. Neighbors say it started with a loud explosion. Boom. Just a loud boom. And the whole house shook. And as you can see, the flames went up about ten feet. Reporter this man was upset because his cat was trapped inside. He wanted to go in after it. What blew up . I dont know what the origin of the fire is just yet. I dont know if anything blew up just yet. But it is being investigated. Reporter as night fell, firefighters found the mans cat. They rescued and resuscitated him. Smoke is still pouring off his body. His owner was upset, but grateful. The house next door had some charring on the outside, but was spared serious damage. In all, five adults are one child are without a home and some other pets will be looking for shelter. Investigators are looking into the possibility that the manager was using propane to try to get rid of termites. We are told this is a legitimate way of getting rid of this type of termite. You heat up the wood to 135 degrees, but that should be left to the experts. Reporting live, joe vasquez, kpix5. Breaking news in san jose, two boys were hit by a car and rushed to the hospital. It happened at 8 30 at college and morepark. Their injuries are serious, but they are expected to be okay. The driver of that blue car, a woman, stopped and is cooperating with police. Tonight, hurricane arthur has picked up landfall and it has picked up strength. It has hit the North Carolina coast. Paulo vandalval is in the middle of it in the outer banks. Reporter good evening guys. That major impact, the rain, the wind, and it is only going to get worse throughout the night. There are thousands of people hunkered down throughout the outer banks riding out hurricane arthur tonight. Arthur is advancing, bigger and stronger an expected. It is already bringing heavy rain to the North Carolina coast where officials are not taking any chances. We strongly encourage you to stay inside and wait for the storm to leave for a long period of time before you venture to the outside. Reporter but earlier on the outer banks, some were found at the beach. One person decided to get some last minute wind surfing in. Warture is expected to bring in storm surges of five feet and rip currents. Some were disappointed they had to cut their fourth of july vacation cut short. We dont want to waste the money. Look at the conditions. You would think there is no reason to leave. Reporter some are planning to ride out the store. A lot of people that would be shopping are running for it. We want you to watch as a guy gets out of his pickup in the middle of union square in San Francisco. He has a knife in his hand and he starts running around chasing people. This happened during pride sunday. People started throwing things at him, taunting him. San Francisco Police say they are aware of the video, but they are not pursues the guy since nobody filed a report. Tonight, so far so good. Part of 280 northbound is closed but crews say everything is on schedule. They are inserting a hinge. Drivers are able to get out of the city at sixth and brannon, but getting in is a different story. This was the scene at chopper 5, traffic backed up all the way to brisbane. You better allow lots of time if you are coming to see the fireworks. Well that wild fire up in napa county is still out of control tonight. The butts fire has grown to 4300 headachiers. It is now 45 contained. Those who had to evacuate returned home today. Some of them had taken things with them that couldnt be replaced. This is a picture of my older daughter. She is now 19. And so yeah, this would have been a tough one to replace. [ laughter ] because i dont think we have anymore of them. The fire has destroyed two homes along with seven other buildings. And a wild fire is burning out of control east of san diego tonight but the Evacuation Order has been lifted. This wild fire started this morning. It scorched two homes and 150 acres. It came dangerously close to hundreds more homes, but firefighters were able to turn it back. Tonight, the funeral for a palestinian teenager abducted and killed in jerusalem has been delayed. Officials say an autopsy need to be done before the 17year old can be laid to rest. The death has raised tensions as many are calling it a revenge killing. That was after the murder of three israeli teenagers earlier this week. My little cousin had no involvement. My family had no involvement in it. He was a child. He was just a child. The killing has been denounced by palestinian and israeli leaders and by the United States and oh countries. Reporter this stranded hiker managed to hold on more than an hour as he waited to be rescued along washingtons chair peak. About 50 miles east of seattle. He is sitting on about a three foot ledge or so. Reporter a sevenmember rescue team, all volunteers helicoptered in from Snohomish County to make the daring rescue. He is at 11 30. Reporter 32yearold miles mcdonald was lowered down to grab the hiker. His helmet camera captured the drama. He made 20 other cliff side rescues over the last five years but says this was the most difficult. He spoke to him by phone. He was hanging on by a three foot space. Reporter but he managed to get to him and told the hiker he was going to be okay. I let him know i didnt want him to let go of the rock. Not grab me when i came in. And remain calm. Reporter what was his reaction . He was a bit shaken up, but he was composed the whole time. And you know, did everything to make his rescue a success. Reporter the entire mission lasted about 30 minutes and ended with the hiker and the entire rescue team back on solid ground with no injuries. One lucky guy. Hey, we know californias drought is hurting some crops, but tonight, tony lopez says it is helping wine makers. Grapes love to be stressed. Reporter well the ongoing drought has done that, but that isnt a bad thing for some wine makers. Ryan taylors drought drenched grapes are thriving alto burns mount vernon winery. Why is that . Stressed out grapes provide a more concentrated fruit flavor taste that is multilayers. It tastes like fresh cracked black pepper and a little raspberry. Reporter these nice liking zem grapes could get ugly in a hurry if we welcome some rainfall. The water could get in and it would start rotting. Reporter rain was welcome during the planting season. It is warm in oakland at 68 degrees. 65 at livermore. Santa rosa is in the mid 60s. A high ridge of pressure is building over the southwest giving us a slow warming trend. We will be here 100 degrees inland by sunday. So things are warming up inland, but along the coast, fog tonight around the coast in the bay, mostly sunny for the fourth. Hot inland this weekend.
