It is going to be close. It is going to be very close. And tonalist got there. California chrome finished fourth after going out as a huge favorite. The crowd hoped they would see something that didnt happen in 36 years. Only 11 horses have won the triple crown since 1919. Did you think he was going to win . Yeah, we did i thought he had a really good shot at it. The belmont is the most challenging race of the triple crown. At a mileandahalf, its the longest of the tracks. California chrome had plenty of support in Golden Gate Fields this afternoon. A large crowd gathered to cheer him on. Many took their support to another level wearing horses colors of purple and green. Andria borba has more on why his owner was so angry. This weekend, the oakland Outreach Group picked up trash and painted over the graffiti. It was inches from the freeway. Volunteers had to keep one eye on the traffic and the other on the paint, but they say it is worth it. Knocking out the graffiti, taking out the blight and the eyesores, we were all born and raised here so this is our way of giving back. We think oakland should be a beautiful and safe place for everyone to live. The plan is for oakland artists to design a new welcome to oakland sign along 880 once the graffiti is all cleaned up. Well the four baby herons knocked out of their tree by a tree trimmer are back in the wild tonight. They were released on the oakland shoreline. They needed a month to recover after falling from their nest. Returning the birds to the same spot was not an option. It is very difficult to put herons back without disrupting the rest of the colony, so getting in there to put babies back doesnt work very well. The babies when they fall, they need to be able to crawl back up on their own in order to find their parentsful it doesnt work for us to put them back. The tree trimmer apologized and paid for the herons care. The feds will not charge him. There is such a thing as too hot and too dry. Danielle nottingham shows us this states drought is taking a deadly toll on a california icon. Reporter looking like sculptures in the sand, joshua trees are icons of the mojave desert. These trees have survived here because the roots are capable of finding water deep in the desert ground, but there are earl lid indications that rising temperatures and a severe drought have dried out their water source. Josh is a park ranger here. This is one that is probably on its way out. Reporter what would Joshua Tree National park be without the joshua trees . It would be a very different landscape. A very different feeling. Reporter scientists like cameron borrows now estimate that 90 of the trees in this park could dry out and die by the end of the century. Warmer is bad because it increases evaporation and it is stressful on the plant itself. Reporter is it in way to reverse what is happen something. If we stopped putting carbon in the atmosphere. It would take a while. Reporter they have been working for months looking for signs of new growth. Any chance the joshua tree has a chance in a changing world. They are volunteer researchers who comb the landscape. To think that a couple of generations from now, it might not be quite so beautiful. It makes you also want to contribute and do as much as i can to help what is here. Reporter but scientists have hope. New trees are growing at Higher Elevations in cooler temperatures and that could be they are adapting to climate change. This is excellent. We are very excited to find the reproduction that we are finding here. Reporter while there is great excitement for each new tree found, there is also a reality. We have a few low clouds along the shoreline, but aside from that, numbers will warm on the beaches. Inland, mid 90s , near 100 at livermore and 85 at the bay tomorrow. So it looks like another warm sunday on tap for the bay area. High pressure means high temperatures and they will stay that way for about 48 hours. We have two very warm days ahead of us, but if you need relief, it is as close as the coastline. Lit only be in the low 70s there if that. Low clouds are melting away better. Fewer low clouds at the beach. A good beach day tomorrow. People were packing in the marin county shoreline today. A lot of traffic. For people seeking relief and boy did you get it. It was freezing at the beach today. Tomorrow will be a little warmer and sunny as well. So here is what is next. We have highs near 100 inland tomorrow. 70s at the beaches and it will be cooler by midweek. Numbers come down to about 15 degrees inland by wednesday. But wednesday cements like a lifetime away. Overnight lows tonight, we look at readings near 60 degrees on average. Lets do the big tour of the bay area to see what the numbers will be tomorrow. 75 at the beach in pacifica. 80 in san mateo. 88 at los altos. 94 at gilroy. On the east bay in the shoreline, the numbers will be in the 80s , but inland, 100 degrees at livermore. 102 at antioch. Pleasant hill, 101 degrees tomorrow. Up in the wine country, mid 90s will do it. Way up in ukiah, 104 degrees. Bodega bay, just 68. 70 for stinson beach. It will be 74 degrees in the sunset district. In the extended forecast after a couple of very warm days, we are looking for numbers to come down on tuesday and wednesday and then they really tumble on thursday with readings near 80 degrees inland. As we head into the weekend, it will stay seasonal this time of the year and the fog and low clouds return to the shoreline. That is weather. As for sports, we have just the person. Just a minute, because first, having perfect attendance in high school isnt always easy, but for one lucky kid in southern california, it was worth it. A chevy dealership in santa ana offered a new car to any student with perfect attendance. 974 students from nine different high schools qualified. Five names were drawn. Those five students all got a key to try to start the car. The dealership says the give away is the least they can do. The more that we can give a student to go to school, the better educated he is, the better he is going to grow as an adult and the better he is going to help the community. Well the student who won the car is an 18yearold senior. She doesnt even have a license, because she walks to school 30 minutes each way and she still made it everyday. Look at her smile.
