In the skies over chelyabinsk, no one saw it coming. In this day and age, how is that possible . Kpix 5 sharon chin tells us the answer is pretty simple. Reporter a bussized fireball exploded across the russian sky. Dashboard video cameras captured the meteor soaring an estimated 33,000 miles an hour, with the force of two world war ii atomic bombs. [ sound of explosions ] reporter the explosion shattered thousands of windows and injured about 1,000 people in chelyabinsk. The sonic boom was felt in booms and classrooms. Astronomers call it cosmic coincidence that the meteor struck on the same day that an asteroid passed near the earth. But why did we know about the asteroid a year in advance, yet have no warning about the meteor . It just snuck up on us. Thats not unusual for the small ones. Reporter an astronomer at chabot space and Science Center says the meteor was too small to detect by radar. The meteor was only a third the size of the asteroid. The asteroid was about as big as a supermarket. He mckeegan says were lucky it missed us. Something like that hits the ground, it would be the equivalent of a two and a half mega ton nuclear bomb. Something that hit downtown San Francisco, it would wipe out most of the city. Reporter the meteor in russia smashed into an icy lake about 70 miles outside of town. Scientists say they will today the space rocks hoping to discover the origins of the solar systems. They say what happened today is a wakeup call to better detect asteroids and meteors heading our way. Some astronomers are organizing a privatelyfunded mission to build and launch a telescope that orbits the sun and tracks asteroids and meteors before they hit the earth. Im guessing somebody is going to organize a way to go into that lake and find out whats down there. Reporter absolutely. Because were talking about getting thousands of dollars, possibly more. What makes them more valuable is the fact that they were documented and caused damage. Platinum, ironbased, all kinds of different elements there. Yes. Good for profit and research. Thanks for that. We have posted more amazing video of the meteor at cbssf. Com. The word to women in one San Francisco neighborhood tonight . Watch out kpix 5s David Jackson tell us us about a guy who attacks women just walking down the street. David . Reporter thats right. Two women have been attacked and beaten here in the Mission District. Two very unusual attacks that have taken place a couple of weeks apart. And now the Police Department wants your help. Both attacks happened in the heart of the Mission District. Both in the Early Morning hours. And in each case, the attackers methods were exactly the same. A lone woman walks toward the man and is then grabbed from behind. No robbery. No sexual attack. Just a beating with fists. Police believe the same man was responsible in both cases. Victims describe this hooded suspect. And tonight, women say the streets of the mission are dangerous at times. I feel like, when theres not a lot of people around, people will search for people who are just walking alone. I try not to leave places late at night. I call for a lift or, you know, i walk out in the middle of the street instead of walking next to shadows and bushes, or ill walk with friends. You know, i have my, you know, tactics, i guess you could say. Im lucky nothing has ever happened to me. But i would assume it would be really dangerous around that time. Reporter again, police say this is a sketch of the Mission District attacker. And they ask anyone with information to contact the San Francisco Police Department at 4155754444. These attacks have occurred when the streets are dark and empty, close to 2 a. M. This is a time when women should not be out alone, police say, certainly not in the Mission District. And in another part of the city, police say a man armed with a hatchet attacked two men in their noe valley home. A neighbor heard a man screaming for help and saw a teenager running from the house in the 300 block of 27th street. Police say the men were tied up and the home ransacked. Officers are looking for three suspects. The two victims are expected to be okay. Well, the man who investigators say turned his house into a bombmaking factory had also sent Death Threats to senator leland yee. Before a judge today, kiet do learned more about this guy. Reporter ken, after talking to neighbors all week, the sense we get is this guy was all bark and no bite. Regardless, this is a truck full of evidence that investigators say would suggest otherwise. Neighbors call him weird, a wannabe, and a poser. Today we got our first good look at everett basham. At his arraignment, he corrected the judge on the pronunciation of his name and was about to say thing before his attorney told him to keep quiet. Hes a man who investigators say stockpiled weapons and bombs and lived like a horder. I can tell you, first of all, the most important thing is nobody was hurt. Reporter bomb technicians have spent the past four days in bashams home wading through clutter. They found a completely assembled bomb, ready to blow, and three assault weapons, and a highpowered rifle, like the one pictured here. Basham was allegedly upset over state senator leland yees proposed guncontrol bills and emailed a death threat detailing how, when and where the assassination would take place. The 45yearold apparently bragged about his extensive sniper training. Bashams parents lived nearby but declined an interview. People have been saying a lot of things about your son. Reporter hes been described as a brilliant engineer, albeit one who walked around in military fatigues and put a half dozen security cameras on his roof. The chp is confident they found everything. Its a huge sigh of relief. I got to take a deep breath. Okay. We were able to fill our obligation. Im excited to tell the neighbors, everything is good. Reporter and so pretty much everything that they have gathered this week is inside this truck. They have a couple more items to process. And they say they should be out of here finally by tomorrow. Basham should enter a plea by thursday. Live in santa clara, kiet do, kpix 5 news. The manhunt is over. Now the money demands. Reporter he says hes entitled to at least half the money, to share with the couple that called 911 after dorner apparently tied them up. Hes worried that those who put up the reward may try to avoid payment, because dorner wasnt captured, but killed. If they dont pay that out, it kind of justifies some of the things that Christopher Dorner was complaining about regarding the city and the lapd. Reporter the lapd says theyve had so many inquiries into the award, they issued a statement. Reporter president obama urged Congress Last year to go after forprofit Educational Programs that take advantage of veterans. I dont think theres enough advice out there. Reporter the gi bill footed matts tuition at the academy of art university, but when he graduates, the air force says hes still going to face a big debt. I might be up to 70,000 in debt. Veterans with gi bill benefits really shouldnt need to take on this debt, and it can really haunt them if they make a mistake. Reporter vets are aggressively recruited because of a loophole in the socalled 90 10 rule. It requires schools to get 10 of their money through nongovernment sources. I think veterans and active Duty Service Members are sometimes shocked at the types of recruiting methods that theyre seeing. Reporter and schools are popping up where youd least expect them. Henley putnam university has a Graduation Rate of just over 50 . A Senate Report called for stringent oversight, but so far, no Government Action has been taken. The academy of art lost its eligibility to receive state grant money when its Graduation Rate fell below 30 . Still, it can get gi bill money.
