of silence interrupted the reading of the names. >> kevin w. donnelly. >> jacqueline donovan. >> reporter: nearly 3,000 victims of the september 11th attacks were remembered one by one. >> whenever you wore a ridiculous shirt such as the one i'm sporting, we didn't know whether to laugh or to cry. today we will do both. >> those reading the names included walter matusa, he's blind but was able to recite some of the names including his father's. >> my father, walter. we miss you, dad. >> reporter: phillip hayes has been to all 15 ceremonies. he flew in from l.a. to remember his dad, a safety director. >> when i clanged the bell for the time my dad lost his life, that exact moment is the most touching thing. >> reporter: at a ceremony remembering those lost at the pentagon, president obama hailed the sacrifice of the fallen and the resilience of those left behind. >> we come together in prayer and in gratitude for the strength that's fortified us across the 15 years. >> reporter: outside shanksville, pennsylvania where flight 93 crashed, an honor guard placed a wreath at the memorial honoring the 40 passengers and crew. a day of working to move forward while vowing not to forget. presidential nominees hillary clinton and donald trump attended the memorial service in new york. >> we saw a number of tributes on the first sunday of the nfl's regular season. in philadelphia vice president joe biden was one of the flag holders of the ceremony on lincoln financial field. he joined 9/11 victims, first responders, and nfl players before the game between the eagles and cleveland browns. and at at&t stadium in arlington, texas former president george w. bush and his wife laura took the field for the coin toss before the cowboys and giants game. the former president bored an fdny hat from a giants player and gave a salute to the crowd before putting it on. back here in the bay area, several ceremonies commemorated the 15th anniversary. firefighters also took turns reading the names of new york firefighters who lost their lives while trying to save the lives of others. >> we also know that 416 of those who died on 9/11 were first respond ers, firefighters, police officers, paramedics who ran in to the flames through falling debris to rescue those who were unable to escape the initial attacks. >> the acting police chief says because of those courageous first responders, at least 25,000 other lives were spared. >> and in san jose, a memorial procession downtown marked today's 15-year anniversary. the mayor joined dozens of first responders to honor the men and women in new york who made the ultimate sacrifice. the event ended with the ringing of the firefighter's memorial bell. another gathering paid tribute to the 40 lives lost on flight 93. john ramos shows us many at the memorial are calling for the national unity that was sparked after the attacks. >> reporter: the 9/11 memorial in union city is specific in its mission. to honor those who died aboard united flight 93 when passengers rushed the cockpit, forcing the terrorists to crash the plane in a field in rural pennsylvania. >> their heroic and courageous actions prevented the plane from crashing in to its intended target. the u.s. capitol. >> the capitol was saved. but the loss of life on that day was staggering. even now, 15 years later, americans of all backgrounds meet to share a collective grief. >> we mourned. we cried. we prayed. but we also learned something about who we were as a nation. we truly were the united states of america. >> reporter: but that lesson of 9/11 seems to have faded as america is once again fractured by arguments over everything. from politics to the national anthem. >> 9/11 basically unified the country. and we are again at this point where nobody is willing to listen to anyone else. >> today we're still a nation that is very much divided. >> reporter: congressman swalwell was a 20-year-old intern in washington at the time and could have been in the capitol building if flight 93 had found its target. yet he also remembers the bond that was formed as people put aside their political differences. >> an image i'll never forget is watching republicans and democrats hand in hand singing god bless america. i think we can go back to that unity. >> reporter: it's something everyone says they want. a government, a country that works together. the question is whether the memory of our national tragedy can achieve that. or do we have to wait for the next one to happen? in union city, john ramos, kpix 5. turning to campaign 2016 now, hillary clinton is recovering after becoming overheated and then stumbling while leaving a 9/11 event in new york today. her doctor later announced she's recovering from pneumonia. the video has drawn concerns about clinton's health. >> reporter: video posted on social media shows hillary clinton's aides tightly holding on to her before she falters and stumbles in to her van. clinton had been attending the ceremony at ground zero to mark the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. before it began, clinton exchanged hugs with others attending the observance. clinton only attended part of the ceremony. a spokesperson said she felt overheated and left to go to her daughter chelsea's nearby apartment. clinton left the apartment a short time later. >> doing great. >> reporter: an aide says clinton was examined by a doctor at her home in chappaqua, new york. the doctor says clinton was experiencing a cough related to allergies. after it didn't go away, clinton was evaluated again friday and diagnosed with pneumonia. she was prescribed antibiotics and was advised to rest. the doctor says at the ceremony clinton became overheated and dehydrated. but is now rehydrated and is recovering nicely. donald trump also attended the observance. he told reporters he didn't know anything about clinton's health. clinton has maintained she's healthy and has no major health concerns. >> clinton does have planned fundraisers here in san francisco tomorrow. her campaign staff is discussing whether she will travel monday based on her health. players and coaches for the seattle seahawks stood with their arms interlocked today during the national anthem. it was meant as a show of unity and a followup to protest that started with 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick. at a church in san francisco, people wore kaepernick jerseys to back his call for racial equality. >> reporter: dr. amos brown, the pastor of the third baptist church of san francisco encouraged members to wear their number 7 colin kaepernick jerseys sunday morning. [ national anthem ] >> reporter: church members kneeling, showing solidarity with the quarterback, asking for social justice. cornerback marcus peters of the chief also showing support for kaepernick and his cause. peters raised his fist during the national anthem which held more significance today, the 15th anniversary of the september 11th attacks. in san francisco fans had mixed reaction. >> it's everyone's right to say what they want to say. freedom of speech. but there's a part of me, i'm a 5th grade teacher and i teach american history so i'm very patriotic. >> there's a lot of struggle out there right now. a lot of people coming out and showing what they're made of and not letting him be the only lone ranger out there. that's a good thing. >> ♪ oh, say can you see >> reporter: while the protests are drawing harsh criticism from many, pastor brown hopes this will start a new dialogue about race and equality. >> this effort is not a sprint. it's a continuation of a after the autopilot system failed to identify a truck turning in front of him. the update will rely more heavily on radar to identify objects. it will be available to drivers in one to two weeks. it's costing more to fill up your tank. aaa found the average price of gas in the u.s. is up 4 cents over the past three weeks. the current average is $2.18 and we're paying much more in california. the is dead after a crash overnight on a highway in oakland. it happened at about 2 a.m. on eastbound 980 near the 27th street onramp. chp officers found a man lying on the shoulder next to a harley davidson. investigators do not know if another vehicle was involved. the man who died is identified as 40-year-old steven lee of rodeo. a man is under arrest in connection with a package theft in el cerrito. surveillance video showing us the man taking a package from outside a home in august. he's been identified as 36-year-old noriel batista. officers were able to recover evidence from the theft. a bay area startup could soon help people kick smoking for good. kpix 5's don ford shows us how they're transforming the traditional patch. >> we really can make a difference. >> reporter: biotech startup says this device is the key. you wear it like a nicotine patch but it's really a tiny computer that regulates the dosage. >> we've combined smart drug delivery where we time the delivery of the nicotine to deal with the patients' or consumers' cravings. >> reporter: more nicotine when needed, less when not. and it's smarter than you think. >> we've actually built a sensor in could essentially erraticate lung cancer and save lives. >> reporter: don ford, kpix 5. if you've been outside today, you've likely noticed it's a tad bit cooler out there. some spots dropped as much as 10 degrees. we have gray skies outside over the bay. that marine layer deepening this evening and a cooling trend is here and really here for the next few days. right now outside your current temperatures in the 60s for places like concord and oakland. livermore at 71. 72, san jose. again, running a good 10 degrees below where we were yesterday. we're still going to drop another 5 to 10 degrees for some locations tomorrow. futurecast showing we will start off with some clouds. those clouds moving back in overnight in to some of our inland valleys but they should dissipate for the second half of the day. most folks inland will see sunshine. in this case of course sunshine does not necessarily mean warm temperatures. in fact, cooler temperatures are headed our way overnight tonight. temperatures will be similar to what we saw last night, topping out in the 50s area-wide. mid 50s for most folks. santa rosa, napa. sunrise tomorrow at 6:50. satellite perspective shows what's going on. this area of low pressure has been slowly making its way up the coast. this is what kicked off our cooling trend last week. it was just wednesday that we saw temperatures near triple digits. we had significantly cooled since then. just the beginning. a deeper, stronger area of low pressure sinking in from the north. it begins to move in tide. and will continue to sink south over the next couple of days. as it does, our temperatures will drop well below average for this time of year. here's a look at your highs for tomorrow. topping out for the warmest locations inland, in the 70s tomorrow. low 70s. some spots may see mid 70s. warm spots inland. these are areas that are generally in the 90s, sometimes triple digits this time of year. this is actually likely going to be the coolest we've seen it this time of year in about three years or so. 72, concord. 72, livermore as well as fairfield. 71 in san jose. i think some spots, antioch, you might hit 75 tomorrow. 60, san francisco. 62, pacifica. 72, santa rosa. 68. your high temperature tomorrow in napa. what to expect? overnight the clouds and that fog will develop once again, likely going to see a little drizzle along the coast. cooler still for monday. sun for most though spots inland. then warming is expected for the second half of the week where temperatures will begin to warm back up in to the 80s, closer to where we should be for this time of year. a look at the extended forecast shows tomorrow warmest locations topping out in the mid 70s, well below average for this time of year. by the bay, temperatures in the 60s and i do think we'll see drizzle. same story along the coast. temperatures in the 50s. tuesday, slight warming in to the 70s. as we advance in to the extended forecast, you'll look at temperatures back in to the mid to upper 80s by mid to late week. warmer temperatures are on the horizon. get ready to wear that jacket for the next couple of days. i've got a lot to tell you. the season opener kicked off in thrilling fashion for the raiders. the finish and reaction next. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, that was ben the raiders opener had a little bit of everything. great quarterbacks,
