chopper. what do you see? >> reporter: look at this thing. it is huge. we're looking at i-17 and state route 51 interchange in the front wall of this dust and it is rocking and rolling in the chopper. winds are about 20 miles per hour but it is gusty. >> the chopper is having some issues. are you feeling the movement in the chopper from the storm? >> it's like riding a mechanical bull and 800 feet above the ground. >> that's quite a description. how far would you say you are from the storm now lacks >> we are in it now. we're at the front edge. we at the front edge of the storm we're staying safe but it is gusty. >> once again give us your location so we know where this is. >> reporter: i-17 and the 101. >> can use them into traffic? are there any traffic issues because of the storm? -- you can see things are moving well on the roadways. that storm coming in but you are not advised right you can help me to not go out in the storm. you're looking -- when you see these pictures now that is basically the front of the storm. >> yes. this started with thunderstorms in the queen creek area and they kicked out cool air rushing out of that storm and then you have the wall of dust propagating or moving forward over the valley and it's not the thickest dust from whatever the turbulent wind that jerry mentioned but you can see is just coursing through. we're under a dust storm warning and that means visibility could be less than 1 mile. sometimes less than 1/4 mile. it's good advice to just wait until this passes and the heavy rain could be a big problem >> jerry be safe. > watching the storm brewing. let's check in with lauren reimer driving toward tucson. lauren how does it look for you? >> reporter: right now it is quite clear. we hit the road to tucson earlier this morning we saw how hard they were getting hit by thunderstorm down south. and so we actually wound up driving through that dust storm you are looking at. maybe half-hour ago as we were getting through south of and we shot the video of what it looks like since it's clear where we are now. when we hit route 60 on i-10 it started getting dark on a search may driving tricky. all of the thick dust. it was also reigning on top of it making it windy and dusty. the worst of it was around queen creek road at the time when we drove through we saw dozens of cars on both sides of the highway pulling over which to do. if you a dust storm but any of the driver should also have taken a step further and turned off the lights for safety. we were driving through around riggs road a started clearing up . still windy and now we are south of chandler -- south of casa grande. we are getting closer into tucson. we're hitting some white patches on the road and it has rained radar i think will hit more rain shortly. >> lauren i am looking at the road there any mention the wet patches. i am seeing some puddling on the sides of the road. do you see the wet roads? >> reporter: yes. every couple of miles we hit patches -- rain appear -- the rain up here was some time ago but there is more clouds ahead. it's not done raining yet. a keeper checking in. a dust storm rolled into the valley from the south about one hour ago. this is what it looked like from the cameras at i-10 and wild horse pass. the rain came close behind this video is from portage street and southern in phoenix. about half an hour ago. rings were calm and then residents were hit with heavy rain heavy wind and dust. the storm has already hit tucson. this is what would like from the cameras earlier this morning. there is widespread flooding on here in the valley technicians are working to try to help prevent as best they can the situations like the one we saw during last week's storm. jill galus file the swissport -- report before the storm hit >> reporter: where out at the i- 17 at indian school road and was at the underpass that we saw severe flooding during last week's storm. what the official we spoke with said it's impossible for them to guarantee you will not see a situation like that again there are small things they are doing now to try to prevent a situation like this from happening once again. it is difficult to forget the haunting images of the floodwaters quick revising on the i-17 that we saw days ago. it got so high that they actually had to shut down all lanes of traffic in both directions. causing lots of drivers to feel frustrated and some were cars for several hours until the waters finally receded. and they were once again able to open of lanes of traffic. keep in mind this happened at the height of the evening rush hour. >> one of the underlying factors of the unfortunate situation was the fact that such a large amount of rain fell in such a short time officials said they have technicians on hand 24 hours a day ready to respond to an emergency situation that we storm moving through but there are small things they are doing to make a huge positive difference. >> we know the storm is coming in and the good news is we've got the advance warning of something like this. we can go around and do some advance checking and look at some of the pump stations making sure everything is ready to go. and that also we're checking the drainage rates around the freeway system looking for spots that may we want to clear them as much as possible. >> reporter: you can also help with the situation. a.officials say simply avoid throwing trash out of your car window. with your one of our roadways or on the freeway because they say trash him people littering is one of the biggest contributing factors when they find blockage in the drain. they are making sure those strains are clear of all debris. further down officials have major infrastructure plans and changes in the works that will make a big difference in the future. we are tracking this storm that is moving through the valley right now. we will have more on the storm including you can prevent it coming up after the break. no was talk about the sandbanks you can get. you can get free sandbags tempe field services on rio salado parkway did it sports complex on guadalupe phoenix and scottsdale are also giving them away. they have a list of all the locations to get sand right now on our mobile app and also track the storms as they move this way. gun the interactive radar. as i said this major storm is moving through the valley right now will have more with ian coming welcome back. we're back up in the air with jere ferguson in the penguin air and plumbing news chopper. a storm is moving through the valley and we are currently looking at north phoenix. jerry what are you seeing? >> reporter: we're looking at downtown phoenix looking from uptown to downtown south along the central. i want to pan out and show you we're hearing reports of delays at sky harbor airport runways are went out. it's difficult to see through the dust but that is why they are having some issues out there at sky harbor. i see some planes around but they are having issues. >> so you we're looking southbound at the airport and you can see there is one plan taxiing on the airport where you are saying we're seeing delays because of the wet weather? where you see the storm -- where is the focus of the is it south of you? >> the dust has moved out through the valley and is reached most of the belated areas in metro phoenix. we are in the rain here along seventh street in the glendale area or actually i guess more arcadia. it looks like rain everywhere. the focus of the storm i guess is all over. >> thank you so much. check-in. we have vehicle driving eastbound on the 202 nuc the dark storm clouds that are forming overhead. it when you see those clowns those are rain clouds. you can see the rain coming down. not seeing much moisture on the roads themselves but ominous looking skies >> yes. i want to show you the view from our viewers. sarah controversy sending this in. this is south mountain off of 24th street as the dust storm moves through to this to our facebook page and use the hashtag. what a sight it looks almost like down it is so dark out. that is a big threat the dust rolling through. this is from our roof camera. it's a mix of dust and rain. we have a flash flood warning for the apache junction area which includes salt river superstition mall. we had a lot of rain and it all comes down the mountain. we're still seeing heavy rain and do not attempt to cross a flooded road. you do not win in that game. turnaround don't drown. town kills you guys are under the gun. there's no flood warning at the moment but there is tons of rain. i would wait a little to go anywhere if you can. i'm it is a putting 20 not as much in the center of the city over downtown phoenix but we are dealing with that dust west side as you are getting hit as well. it's now in litchfield park pushing into glendale and peoria and to the south and west of buckeye. we are seeing some clearing behind this. we will watch out for this way as far as the rest of the state we're not seeing anything yet but you still have a threat. 78 degrees at sky harbor. 95 in litchfield park that is rain-cooled air at work. dropping the temperatures 20 degrees and on the east side we've seen a tremendous drop in temperatures. i was forecasting 103 but the rain came earlier than we anticipated so i'm going to dial the temperature back because of the cool air and the clouds. this is all from tropical depression javier. dew point 76. that's a very high number. there still in the 30s in page so we will get showers in payson and prescott as moisture interacts with the low pressure system. it's going to be interesting next 24 hours and most of the state under a flash flood watch. the mountains you guys will be dealing with thunderstorms as we get overnight and into wednesday. afternoon storms and dust in phoenix we could see more flooding and then the mountains have a chance of flooding as well. looking at futurecast the models have been all over the place with this system. it's somewhat complex but some continue to point to showers tomorrow morning around the drivetime commute. we have tons of moisture to work with and we could still see flooding problems. we will watch this carefully so tune in tomorrow morning and we will have you covered. paul will be here in the afternoon in about 30 minutes here is tomorrow afternoon in the mountains. this model is not picking up on it but it could be busy tomorrow afternoon as well. finally we dry out as we get going into thursday and beyond. darling the highs back i think the only get into the mid-90s and not the 100 tomorrow expect an active morning with the high hang onto the showers and the cold weather for thursday and then we get back to our normal cells with warmer temperatures and dry conditions. if you're in fountain hills or north mesa i would avoid the 202 and the beeline highway. there's a ton of rain coming down. i would not be terrible surprised if we saw a flash flood warning in that area. this threat continues for the next 24 to 48 hours. just be aware and i cannot reiterate do not cross those flooded washes. >> and it you of 103 is the high five minutes ago and now it's down to 97 because of the storms that's how massive these are >> 70 degrees at sky harbor and we have a vehicle in the on us 60 near apache junction. and they have found some rain. you can see the driving rain -- they're not even on 60 anymore they are on the exit that is coming down and look at the rain coming down. the wipers on
