warm water and packing winds up to 75 miles per hour. look at the rain showers starting to move into southern arizona. that's where we see the book of that moisture. the national weather service issuing that flash flood watch from douglas to show low. notice across the greater phoenix area. they have canceled the flash flood watch because take a look. a lot of models are indicating this track moving further toward the east. a lot of rainfall. red shaded areas from areas of tucson toward the safford area. that is 2.5 to 4 inches of rainfall. flooding issues expected there. how long will around? that is coming up with your seven day planner. there are real concerns tonight that flooding from this hurricane could have a drastic effect on the u.s. port of entry. investigative reporter megan low tells us the ms. of tunnels beneath the port are at risk of collapsing.>>reporter: the city of novalis sits in a valley and wind storm clouds form, streets this was july, 2014 when 2 inches of rain dropped on the city. all of the floodwater eventually went underground into the tunnels that flow from mexico into arizona. >> people can get swept away. >> reporter: in the spring of this year, a border patrol agent took us down a flight of stairs. >> that is a pretty stout door. >>reporter: to one of the underground rivers that runs directly beneath the u.s. border with mexico. >> how much water gets in here when it is really raining? >> wall to wall, floor to ceiling. >>reporter: the structural integrity of another nearby tunnel has caught the attention of arizona's u.s. senators. they wrote a letter in july warning that the tunnel is in jeopardy of collapsing and that the monsoon season would place the tunnel at further risk. with the tunnel collapses, it could shut the port and put travelers and customs and border protection officers lives at risk. back in mexico, we dropped into a storm drain and headed toward the river that flows beneath the port of entry. >> you can hear water flowing up ahead. the tunnel is pitch black, walls concrete with cracks and gaps, debris littering the ground and water pours wn tomorrow, this could be a raging torrent as the remnants of hurricane newton bear down on this city, turning the streets into rivers and filling the failing tunnels to capacity. >> you were physically there your self. you are down in the tunnels. how bad is it? >> they don't look very sound but the u.s. general services administration is studying the tunnels to see what, if to shore them up. whatever they decide, it is going to require the cooperation of the u.s. and mexican governments because a lot of the problem is south of the border. >> right smack in the middle of the election season. thanks for that report. cbs 5 tracking the latest from hurricane newton and how it is affecting our forecast right here in the valley. look for special coverage starting at 4:30 am on wake up arizona. you can also open up our cbs 5 a bank robbery and a wild high-speed police chase and a fatal shooting. that sequence of events played out all across the valley today. the aftermath is affecting traffic tonight. amanda goodman now with the latest from tempe. >>reporter: there is still a lot of police activity here on base -- baseline and the i-10 on-ramp were officers shot and killed that mean brother who they identified as 31-year-old stephen del rio. the west valley to the east ended in tempe. phoenix police say this started out as a bank robbery call in avondale where three suspects reportedly held the place up before shooting at police and taking off. during the pursuit, two suspects bailed but were later caught. the driver refusing to give up. witnesses were glad officers stopped them when they did. >> it's dangerous with kids in the car. they knew how to take care of it >> the already shot at police officers. he has endangered the public for a half-hour as he drives recklessly. it is important to stop him. >>reporter: weight this evening, they identified the driver who was shot and killed but the other two suspects, they have not released their identities yet. amanda goodman in tempe cbs 5 news. >> still no sign of a valley medical student missing in lake pleasant since sunday. conte four-year-old chintan parents have traveled here from chicago helping search crews until about 11:00 tonight. he rented the boat with friends for the labor day weekend. friends called for help on sunday when they realized he was missing. a possible predator may be targeting female runners along a popular trail in north- central phoenix. an alleged victim shares her story with cbs 5 lindsey reiser after she says the man tried to run her over. >>reporter: along central avenue, cyclists and runners are used to looking out for cars but this woman says they are now looking out for more. >> when you are a woman and you are a runner, you expect to be harassed a little bit. it's wrong. >>reporter: but this woman who asked us to conceal her identity, we will call her janet, says what happened to her recently was more serious than a cat call. janet says before crossing one of the residential streets along central, she stopped for >> the gentleman inside the car started milling towards me like come here. i thought i will -- he is signaling me to run across. >>reporter: she says she had a bad feeling as he looked at her intensely. >> i ran across and as soon as i got in front of his car, he pushed the gas pedal and started accelerating toward me. i kept running and thought why would he do something like that? the head of college counseling at great hearts says the standout -- to stand out, you need to put the wheels turning as early as middle school but hit the gas freshman year. >> grades matter, start. >>reporter: but good grades aren't enough. in fact, she says one of the biggest trends in college admissions and scholarship is how your kids spend their time outside the classroom. >> students who do the best in 12th grade, the ones who sit down and have all these options and opportunities, are the ones who really just did great work. focused on their class work, got involved in things they genuinely loved, not to pat a resume the things they are passionate about. >>reporter: and remember you will likely be paying for part of the cost so you need to have early on >> that was a wake-up call when you get the letter that says we are giving you $20,000 a year and you are like this is amazing but you have to pay $30,000 more and where is that coming out of?
