Calls of impeachment for President Trump the full House will debate the articles of impeachment on Wednesday the House Judiciary Committee accuses Trump of betraying the nation by abusing his office and of blocking lawmakers efforts to investigate his actions California Democratic Congresswoman Zoe Lofgren told c.n.n. That Trump's alleged soliciting of foreign aid in an election and his disregard of lawful congressional subpoenas has profound consequences if it's Ok to say I refuse to cooperate at all with the Congress of the United States they 3 branches of government will be changed forever going forward so this is important not just for President Trump but for our country for the ages. Mostly cloudy today in the San Francisco Bay Area as in the fifty's lows the night in the forty's with a chance of showers in the central San Joaquin Valley partly cloudy with highs in the fifty's Imax parental News returns at 8 on k.p. F.a. 7 o 8 in the morning here on up front and Capt Burke and apparent effort seeker and before we could start with today's main show be very quick and somewhat astonishing updates from your radio station this is our our final day of fund raising for. Our holiday tried a highly unusual holiday drive in that it was both postponed and interrupted by live gavel to gavel impeachment coverage that set us back several days in our fundraising we find ourselves up against a very hard deadline we're not going to be fundraising tomorrow will be going to live gavel to gavel coverage of the House floor vote and debate on impeachment and as of this morning we have exactly $55000.00 left to raise which is substantially more than we have raised in any one day fund drive to date we also have a highly unusual highly unexpected and staggeringly large challenge that was called in late last night for this morning one donor in Mountain View has offered to start our final day of fundraising with a $5000.00 challenge well. Before we get into any Thank you guest before we get into any interviews we're going to start the clock on that challenge we have one donor standing by in the heart of Silicon Valley who has offered to double $5000.00 if we can raise $5000.00 to match them. Probably if you've been listening through our fund drive you have some idea of what thank you gifts appeal to you we've got a room full of phone volunteers who can help you look them up 180-439-2573 extension 2 you can go through our gifts at k. P.f.a. Dot org there laid out many you style the most important gift is this radio station . And if we can make that $5000.00 challenge and turn it into $10000.00 that is mazing and even if you don't have your head wrapped around a gift if the most important thing that you can get for the holidays is a strong Cape p.f.a. At a moment in history when this country definitely needs it. But make that call right this 2nd and started off with a bang the $5000.00 countdown starts now $1843957321800.00 k. P.f.a. Or on line at w w w dot k p.f.a. Dot org All right. This morning we're going to be covering emergencies live in emergency country and Emergency Preparedness. The. Part of Bay Area's geology that people worry about the most is the Hayward fault runs about a mile from our studios it is capable of producing our earthquake of a magnitude more than $7.00 and most importantly. It lets a big one rip. On average every 150 years it has been more than 150 years since the last one we're going to start with a conversation we had with enter all that who's a science writer founder of a weekly blog on the geology of Oakland and former u.s.g.s. Technical editor so we start with like the technical stuff like where where are their fault lines near where we are and well the everybody knows about the sanitariums full which runs just off San Francisco all the way up to change Mendocino all the way down to the Salton Sea the Hayward fault as much shorter it's only about 15 miles from point Sam probably down to the Sultan of San Jose. But that's a 50 miles over earth quake runs right through populated areas. The fault is like a sleeping giant in our landscape and as a fan of science love it as a citizen I dread it. How big or bad well this next quake the. Well the fault. The size of an earthquake a fault can produce depends on the amount of rock that is pressing against each other and building up friction building up stress energy so we have a pretty good idea that the Hayward fault if it all ruptured at once would be about magnitude 7 which is just pretty bad a magnitude earthquake half that size magnitude $6.00 would. Cause serious damage to most ordinary structures what are the kind of destruction could it cause well it will start the the ground jiggling if there are deep sedimentary basins they will applet the shaking at certain frequencies at slow frequencies which is. Which is important to large engineer buildings so the bay area the San Francisco Bay itself is exactly one of those kinds of basins it's filled with mud it's like a bowl of jelly. That as I say it amplifies slow waves so if you're an engineer building you will feel it as a slow nauseatingly swaying that will last a very long time that's not quite the same as being you know on top the fault itself were all you'll be jiggling at all sorts of frequencies it will be like being mugged. This is is this particular concern in areas built on fill along the bay shore even more so in areas of little. Nowadays we have a better idea how to make fill the areas of old Phil for instance probably Jack London Square but certainly in the missionary in San Francisco where they had no idea in the 1850s how to make fill they just they sank ships there they dumped gravel there they threw anything they could find into the ground and it's lousy ground as we found out in 1006 we found out in 1000 $909.00 and it will always be that way the East Bay is a little better off because it was settled later we had a better idea of what was going on and the people who filled and the East Bay were the railroad companies and they were very self interested so that if a good job I am more optimistic about the East Bay than I am about San Francisco what is the science that allows you to predict when an earthquake will hit or where it will hit. We have no idea really when it will hit we just know that. We have figured out the most recent history of the East Bay earthquakes for the last couple 1000 years and over that period large earthquakes large enough to rupture the ground to leave a trace Underground have happened on average every 140 years that varies between 95 years 160 years and probably a little more air outside of that so we can say that since the great earthquake of 868 that's been 149 years that's a little over the average at doesn't mean that it's any more likely to happen today than it was yesterday but it's likely to happen we were talking before you came in here for the interview about the 1989 earthquake was actually centered south of Santa Cruz but it knocks down part of the Bay Bridge all these miles away like how do you think about what the impacts would be of the Hayward Fault Poppy I mean it runs it runs through u.c. Berkeley's campus less than a mile from our studios here yes it does and I'm glad we have a nice well engineered building here we hope. Sounds like we'll find out retrofitted at least one part of it it feels real secure what the difference is between an earthquake that's right next to you right and something like Loma Prieta that was far away but still that a lot of damage Loma Prieta was actually the same size as the biggest earthquake we have on the Hayward fault so if you brought that here it would be. Very impressive indeed it would be a lot more damaging in it and conversely all the damage we felt I fear it will feel that way down in San Jose it will feel that way in Cupertino Apple headquarters it will feel that way and Santa Rosa feel that way in San Francisco it'll feel it'll affect the Bay Area just as strongly except here in the East may well be on it like what does that mean does that mean like just flattening houses so our residences for the most part. Are going to be Ok if you're up on the Hill you know right on the fault probably going to be shaking off their foundations small apartment buildings especially old ones that have parking spaces underneath them and their so-called soft story structures those are dangerous period one and your landlord hasn't retrofitted it you should think seriously about your of what you're going to do. So my big fear is we're also talking about before you came and is tsunami thing great how likely would the earthquake set off a tsunami is there no way to predict that we we know what kind of quake it will be it will be a what's called trance current rupture or that you saw it's moved past each other and neither side moves up relative to the other when you're talking about tsunamis it's very important which side goes up relative to the other because when you're under the water and the side rises it pushes up the entire ocean above it and then that spreads out in a tsunami wave that's not going to happen with a her fault earthquake may get we get some ripples from tsunamis a least of our worries or our big worries will be liquefaction. That's when the ground as I said you know you shake it like a chili bowl it can turn into quicksand it could lose its strength and a large building that's not properly sided. Confection prone land will could tip over if. It ought to fall down. So liquefaction is one hazard and the other is landslides and the hills are notorious for that there will be. Thousands of landslides from. San Paolo all the way down to San Jose Milpitas and everywhere in between and are hills so we have liquefaction in the lowlands we have landslides on the high lands and in between we have fire to what we typically think of as an earthquake risk but there will be fires why fires because there will be ruptured gas lines there will be downed power lines there will be fires from barbecues in the backyard to furnaces some fraction of those will start a fire and when the water mains are broken and we don't know how many will but some will fire departments will be affected fires will just be awful so like all that infrastructure you mentioned the water the Internet the freeways the power lines is that all vulnerable to a severe earthquake because we haven't taken the measures necessary to prepare or because you just can't protect it from that level of quake. When we originally built a lot of our. Of the East Bay We had no idea what an earthquake fault was the fault as I said it's like a sleeping giant on the landscape and some of those features were very attractive to the 1st builders for instance the fault forces ground water up to the surface those are springs closer to Zahra bl Oh my God So that's where you settle 1st you know and in a town like a word which is pretty low there are something called a pressure ridge which forms along a fault where the 2 sides actually or forced together and they have built up and were Ridge Well that's where Prospect Street is and it's called Prospect Street because it has a nice views it's got houses on it and the right on the fault there is an old folks home and south Hayward it was built on a bluff with a beautiful bay if you all that's because the fault made that bluff. Missions St mission Boulevard from the San Jose mission all over to Hayward runs right along the fault because it was a natural corridor. So that's that's part of it we built before we knew about the fault what should people be doing to prepare how seriously should people be taking this well ordinary people should always take it seriously and we should always be prepared there are easy ways to start you can start of 72 hours. Which has city of San Francisco site. That links to all sorts of basic preparedness information that's easiest place to start. 72 hours that like the window you need to be prepared for the misery that because you should be prepared for 72 hours of being on your own water food. Pet Supplies medication phone charging whatever. Nowadays they actually say it should be a week. But I haven't changed 201. 168 hours dot org My own concern is it's hard to start and we're all reluctant to do that I'm reluctant to do that. So so I think what motivates me and I hope will motivate other peoples to think is to look ahead look look at this aftermath scenario and think how good you'll feel having done these things were so annoying to do you know stockpile batteries cash look around your house or apartment and figure out what little things you can do yourself by thinking how good it will feel on the other side when you have saved yourself so much trouble. That is the voice of end all than science writer founder of weekly blog on the geology of Oakland and former us g.s. Technical editor very quick fundraising update before we continue with that interview. We were not expecting this is the final day of fundraising Herek a p.s.a. We had phoned into us a staggeringly large challenge far out of proportion to what we would typically face during fundraising one donor in Mountain View who is offered to double $5000.00 I get chills just saying that. So far we have clocked $300.00 towards that $5000.00 which is a start $4700.00 to go and leaves us for. The phone number is 180-439-5732 this is it this is the last time we get to ask for your support in 20191800 hate k p f a it's an enormous chance for you to make your pledge go further 180-439-0573 extension 2. We do this periodically as a public service and we're partly marking the 30th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake we're offering a set of emergency preparedness gifts for your pledge that you absolutely have to have if you live in earthquake country which the vast majority of you too will be talking about this in a little bit but when the u.s.g.s. Modeled what would happen if a $7.00 centered in Oakland hit the Hayward fault it found $400.00 fires would break out simultaneously of the buildings that meet current codes 5 percent would be unsafe to occupy leaving about $411000.00 people displaced in a region already facing a massive homelessness crisis and parts of the East Bay would be without tap water for 7 months this is a fault line that pops with a major quake on average every 150 years and the last major quake on the Hayward fault was 151 years ago so very quickly because we're going back to the interview we're on. When you're in emergency radio so you have a way to get information when the power goes out that's yours for a pledge of. $200.00 or $20.00 a month at 180-439-5732 we're offering a portable personal water filter very easy to throw in your pocket and go it's good for hiking it's good for camping it is good for the apocalypse because it may be the case that you have water in your pipes and your water utility telling you it's not safe to drink that's yours for a pledge of one $120.00 or more or $10.00 a month at 180-439-5732 we have in a merchant kit this is a backpack We have one here in the studio with us it is packed with food and water for 2 people for 3 days 2400 calorie food bars 12 water pouches 2 emergency ponchos 12 hour emergency light sticks medical gloves dust masks a 33 piece 1st aid kit survival blankets and more often a backpack so you can grab it and go and that is yours for a pledge of $300.00 Everything I have mentioned the radio the water filter the backpack stuffed with supplies is yours for a pledge of 5 I know that's a lot. I don't want you to think this is the only way to get emergency supplies but if you have the money you can ta
