A new organization is taking on 2 seemingly unrelated issues p.t.s.d. And marine conservation The idea is really to create this elite unit of former military trying to combat divers retooled and repurposed on a new positive mission to go out and help the planet Jim is co-founder of force from the veteran side it's providing mission therapy for a group of guys who have spent the better part of a decade of their lives deployed in combat zones and who are having real issues and struggles when they come back earlier this year the group deployed on its 1st mission restoring a coral reef in the Cayman Islands 7 veterans were taught to transplant pieces of living coral on to dying reefs. It was a resoundingly success one of our Navy SEALs said you know the thing I've been missing is the sense of doing something larger than myself and now I have it again because I can see where advocating on behalf of these marine conservation issues it's something that I can make an impact on and as the world continues to warm. Worldwide major funding for Beale Street Caravan is provided by the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Auto Zone corporation Hi I'm your co-host Patmos unwarily and I'm Kevin companies this week on Bill Street Caravan we have tanked and the banger caring contributor Robert Gordon he'll be back with us to talk about the history of high records that's all coming up right now and Bill stick here than. A Pat Thank heaven take on the bang is a self described funk soul act out of New Orleans but I'm going to call them an all in one Swiss Army Knife melting pot fusion of all the things about music that we here at Bill Street Caravan love they've got that they've got the rock they've got the cell and they know how to get weird and they know how to get fun and trippy is so good dynamic on record that I was secretly skeptical if they could pull it off live but they didn't kill it in this performance taking the bang as lead but Terry on a ball aka tank Terry on a began her journey entering poetry slams in New Orleans she in the future members of the band actually met one of these open mike nights the group for. Came together as tank in the bank as in 2011 they've been in New Orleans favorite and they captured the national spotlight just this year by winning npr's Tiny Desk contest and we're thrilled to bring them to our listeners in a performance captured at the historic Claiborne temple in downtown Memphis Well speaking of the Claiborne temple the setting for the show this week is so when credible that it's almost like having another star on the program we obviously can't broadcast the show from here without telling our listeners more about it so stay tuned we're going to go more into detail about the historic Claiborne temple in the 2nd half of the program and we'll have meant this musician Tanya Dyson in the studio to tell us more about it here's taking the Bangas live on Bill Street Caravan. Probably to get back. A little. Bit of. The club to. Get a good. 7 pick . To see. I did not the one I am the way I'm a big beat a black girl in the back of the clear cut stay and. Live in my. Here's more from taking the bankers live on Bill Street Caribbean. Good for you so good when you. So. Something. Else. I'll be back. Oh let's. Just. break. That was tanking the bang is live on Beale Street here then we'll be right back with more music but 1st we're going to turn it over to Bill she caravan contributor Robert Gordon Robert is a writer and documentary filmmaker he's written several histories about Memphis music including it came from Memphis and respect yourself Stax Records and the soul explosion his next book titled Memphis Red Party comes out in 2018 so be on the lookout for it right now he's going to talk to us a little bit about the history of our records. Robert Gordon back with another installment of the record store the storied Memphis label that records a little bit of everything and had a whole lot of success with Al Green. Highs producer Willie Mitchell had formed a crackerjack band and by the late 1960 s. They were enjoying so many chart hits that it's hard to imagine they lacked for anything but they did lack for something one thing a voice that could sing. Soon enough in 1970 they'd find Al Green but in 1068 Willie and the rhythm section met. And actually was discovered by another high artist a trumpet player and bandleader named Jean Bowlegs Miller So before we get to let me tell you a little bit about Bowlegs. Legs Miller was a popular band leader in Memphis he'd come up around the great Memphis band side by Willie Mitchell and Al Jackson Sr So he learned to play all kinds of songs to all kinds of audiences. Bowlegs he even employed the Hodges brothers before Willie Mitchell trained them into his house band. Record for high things were getting electric and funky. Was playing bar one night when a young woman approached him between acts and asked to sit in with a band. That was. And she was 19 years old and visiting from St Louis. When he heard. Asked if she wanted to record that's all I've ever wanted she said and so she did. Her 1st single was part time love. You would know from listening to this heavy blues that had been raising him in a gospel choir directed by her father. She learned Blues by peering through the windows of clubs and her earliest songs like her version of Johnny Taylor's hit part time love are gutsy and hard hitting. I've always liked and people's sense of dynamics the way she delivers soft lines immediately after she screamed others and really the feel of the church is never too distant for. Part time love became a Top 10 r. And b. Hit and plenty more followed for an peoples at high some of the others were I pity the fool come to mama and one of my favorites I'm gonna tear your playhouse down. The. Beautiful and smooth voice became a perfect college for Willie Mitchell silken productions and high. His brother James wrote really poignant string and horn arrangements that suited her perfectly and also showed off her strengths. Peoples had her biggest hit in 1973 with I Can't Stand The Rain. She and her husband high artist on Brian's who'd been a vocalist and Willie Mitchell band were sitting in their living room when a storm hit real hard and the evening plans got cancelled and said I can't stand the rain and Don leapt on it as a title and then listeners leapt on the song when John Lennon heard it in 1903 he said it was the quote greatest record 2 years. Then. Bring in the memory. And peoples took a musical hiatus during the disco era The began making records again the 1980 s. Her catalogue has inspired other performers including Etta James and Tina Turner who've covered some of her songs and here's an interesting tidbit about an peoples she was co-writing a song with Al Green once and they got a good lyric but couldn't take it anywhere the line was take me to the river wash me down hey this is been Robert Gordon talking to you about high records and high times on the Beale Street character. On his own is proud to support Bill Street Caravan and many other arts organizations that strengthen the greater meant this community parts are just part of what we do Auto Zone dot com Street Caravan is also supported by awards from the Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau Tennessee Arts Commission arts Memphis and Tennessee tourism Tennessee Vacation dot com the soundtrack of America was made in Tennessee we're back and for those of you just tuning in this week on Bill Street Caravan we're featuring take in the Bangas and a performance capture that historic Claiborne's have all in downtown Memphis just as we promised earlier the show Memphis musician Tanya Dyson is here to tell us more about this venue and its sacred place in Memphis history tell me how in the bangers got on your radar Oh so I actually met the band a couple of years back they came and did a show with Chinese connection to the embassy as of that we have been in communication I'm talking back and forth and then by this time the festival they came about in a kind of expanded the festival after the 1st year to want to include a larger act so actually reached out to them to do this year's Soulsville USA festival but then somewhere in the middle of the talking to them they ended up blowing up supporting really you know about the n.p.r. Tidy dance contest so at that point they were like I think we're going to be on tour and October so we don't know if we're going to make it and so there's like is there another date or something we can do that yeah you know. Memorial Day weekend wanted to do a fundraiser for the for the event and they were like sure we can do that and come to Memphis then just to support and I mean they came through and the amazing concert at the concert was that Clarence temple talked a little bit about why you chose him point why the history fits in with soul music Clayborne temple history is steeped as far as the civil rights movement and the building of the sanitation strike so when they met in I am the mayor and that famous slogan issue you know I always hear that always stands and it's close to south Memphis is the largest venue that we had close to south mn enough to form some type of kinship the way it makes sense to do a fundraiser for a festival that's in south Memphis with a story structure that's so close in proximity and what they're trying to do it's a similar thing is what took place in that church is kind of what we're trying to do in the neighborhood which is come together and we use it as one central location so you know I have the location of Claiborne temple where they gather and we hope that the festival will be a gathering place for creatives particularly black creatives in the city to give them a home and a place to be and exhibit their art because that's lacking and that's what the claimant temples are so in Memphis today what does the soul music scene look like. Out of the soul music scene is flourishing in Memphis it never dad is just the opportunity kind of fizzled out of course you know behind this as a nation of Martin Luther King and then of course you had the closing of that greatest you know soul institution Stax in you know had never really close but at the same time as my business being the change and different things right there so it kind of changed the face of the soul scene here but now you see so many different venues that are popping up to support art in you're seeing people like Cameron Bethany with unapologetic is creating a whole new avenue so that you don't even necessarily need a venue and you see people like. Junior from Memphis that came out of Stax academies Thanks music academy doing his own thing making a making the same for himself so whereas not even really laugh before Mrs he came up off of putting base to interning viral videos and putting the final soundtrack behind viral videos by who thinks of it so you're saying like this whole aspect of soul music where it's kind of evolved and it's stretching out and is reaching beyond how do you find new talent and introduce new talent when you're constantly living and sometimes even eclipse the shadow of Al Green in. Carla Thomas and William Bell you know the right. Well I guess one of the biggest things that I have used an amazing resource that actually was able to create for myself was the word which has been going on in February to be 9 years now which has been an open mike and it's gotten a great word out you know as far as art as you can come there you have a band that you can actually perform with involved with you can come and perform your original music and feel welcome Susan it's like I've met so many different art is through there. One of the 1st shows that matter fact the 1st show that artistic approach it was at the wire Bushman so many of these names that you hear on this. Now so I got their start at the wired in every Monday is still continuously being boosted now the new host of the words he Henderson who again vaccinated me. She's the last it's been there in mass and been doing an amazing job amazingly soulful voice in so you're hearing voices like. Really it is just the element that she brings to the word has been amazing and so being able to be around so many different art is of that caliber on a weekly basis for 9 years so close to 500 and also my affiliation with Memphis and collaborative were just meeting the artists that are there because they they see some house out because they are new Our it is an error trying to figure out like can I meet other musicians like me can I record this work I have these songs that are written in being able to just meet people and it's been incredible honestly surges be around and be exposed to so much talent and I can't even begin to put into words exactly how much talent actually exists just in this city alone it's ridiculous I mean so region we've got the most amazing region to read music and for tanks She talked a lot about how her cell has been influenced by music that's come from this place sometimes if you talk to artists that are from Memphis they look at that legacy as a blessing and a cars and it's I have been here long enough but I wasn't born or raised here I don't think there's any other city in the world that the music as far as a legacy and then when you look at old and new and that combination and they can't co-exist is the difference between walking from one side of the street to the other and getting that. But yeah that experience is just within seconds of walking from one place to another in c. And all of this so it's like yeah the world the world looks at Memphis the world I always look towards Memphis you know even you know back in the day and just look I met what. They were able to accomplish not just within soul music but then looking at how soul and Roxanna intertwine with each other with evolve away at Sun Records because a lot of people don't know Rufus Sam is did a lot of work with some records Turner was a and I you know as far as development he's no you know as far as I can see in that whole soul and different things like that and a miter right that came later before they had Michael Sauer rocking maybe a. Rock means everything will be made however that intertwine you know well thanks for coming in and chat with us about this amazing show that you put together I'm sure have you think you will be hearing more from you soon we're going to go back to more live music from taking the bangers on Beale Street here.
