And seventy's he's a great singer but he's also an amazing songwriter and it is that talent and ability that Don decided to focus on for his professional career and the behind the scenes nature of that songwriter role is why his name might not be so familiar to many in our audience Don Bryant was a teenage singing. Phenomenon and Willie Mitchell the architect of the Memphis sound scene drafted him to from his band Don became interested in songwriting and was given a chance to work with the 5 Royales also under Michel suit which the result was the song I got to know his talent was so obvious that seeming soon took a backseat to songwriting he wrote hits for Al Green Otis clay Opie right and he wrote the hit song I Can't Stand The Rain for his future wife and people's Maybe you've heard it and yes they are still married very much in love and Missy and joins her husband on stage in the 2nd half of this program done as recently released just the 2nd album of his career is called Don't give up on love and it's on Fat Possum records here's Don Bryant live on field street here at. Records. Find our you great well let me tell you the story of higher records this is Robert Gordon and I'm talking to you from Memphis Tennessee where a whole lot of great music has come from blues rock n roll soul like they say it came from Memphis and I records recorded some of all of it though the labels heyday was surely from 1970 to 1976 when their superstar Al Green carried the flame for Southern soul. Speed. Is a one a and. The . Records was founded in 1956 across town Sam Phillips was making the music business look easy his son Records label had unleashed Elvis Presley on the nation 2 years before and Elvis his contract had just sold to r.c.a. For a record breaking amount of money. So 3 musicians working with Sam Phillips decided to strike out on their own even the record business is a business and pretty quickly these 3 guys quit inclined Bill Cantrell and Ray Harris were bought out by businessman Joe Coogee who owned a popular Memphis record store called papar Tunes Now get this cookies partners own not only a record distributorship but also one of the region's largest jukebox agencies which means high records became part of a mini conglomerate that controlled the recording of the records their distribution and even their sale when a box of records left their warehouse for their juke boxes and retail outlets they'd already paid themselves twice for thus high knew they could sell a certain number of records before a song had even been recorded virtually removing the risk inherent in the music business fortunately in addition to good business sense High Records had great musical taste there are really 3 distinct periods for high records a rockabilly sound in the 1950 s. a Jazzy pop sound in the 1960 s. And soul success in the 1970 s. . In the fifty's Ray Harris became His' 1st driving force and under his direction the label released several early rock n roll classics. Success for high came in 1959 Bill Black who left his job playing bass for elders police the 1st of many singles on high well into the 1960 s. Billed blacks combo would be one of highs top selling arms. To. The other 2 periods in the Record story are defined by Willie Mitchell in the 1960 s. Willie a trumpet player recorded best selling instrumentals for high and in the 1970 s. He produced the labels great soul artists Al Green and people's cell Johnson and all of. This is really we're hearing now a song called Teens journey will ease sophisticated sensibilities kept high on top for many years we'll be hearing more from all these guys in the weeks to come as we explore the story of high records this is Robert Gordon from Bill Street Carol see you next time. His new album is just on 2nd Well Howard played on the 1st one back in 1969 so there's a lot of magic on that stage right now they're playing in front of thousands of adoring hometown fans and he hits the roof at the very end you don't want to miss a minute of the 2nd set but 1st we're going to hear from Dan himself writing and singing was it's been my life you know that that's what I've done and that's what I've enjoyed in the music and nobody on the way that this was this is what I wanted to do so I started concentrating more on writing. To start coming in needing what Tiriel and what have you so will it kind of back double from what I was doing as an artist concentrating on that there which didn't really bother me a whole lot because I was getting involved more often to the right and this phones start popping out you know and made me feel good so he made me to an arm and it studio and it has a modest would come in and needed material he looked to me to have something prepared for him so I mean I got deeper and deeper into the writing situation then I start enjoying it I know you know once you have an area was going to be is going to be a part of my life so I enjoyed all of it and the writing I enjoyed just as much as I did this thing I was still singing with the bay and whatever so I was getting this thing in a man and I was get my life. It was just a part of my life when you write a song you talk about being the house writer do you write a song and go oh I'm writing this song for this person or do you just write a song and say hey I want to try this song out well sometimes. You know I'd have the artist in my and I was trying to write a song for a lot have some material that I could use to fit that style of what I do so I kind of trim it down and in turn it over a little in a change some words in it and make it fit to an artist. I had invested notice. That they were coming and so I had time to work on it in you know just work on something that had other. Writers down it happened me out material if I needed to gear for artist that was coming in if I would work on it and try to get it for the artist but mostly I had enough time that I knew I was going to be a newbie immaterial I knew the sound so market kind of gear the songs toward how they did phrases and different things in music lyrics I want to go back and you're from a big family there are 10 kids in your family if you were in the middle you started singing at the age of 5 was that big family thing was it just this is what we did yes yes. That it was. Called a false start on a gospel group and they would rehearse at the house and we would sit around listening and what you know and on occasions we tried to get the kids we try to get together and you know imitate they I think that's I think basically that's how I got started and over there to the neighborhood as we grew up there was always somebody in the neighborhood love singing and whatever and at night with nothing else to do on the streetlamp we would gather together and in saying some of the popular songs in that way you could know who had horses and whatever you know and we do they would pull a group together you know in nothern doing everything at that ballot sit on the lights and and just sang songs you know and. We got. This emerging in in the neighborhood heard and he wanted to be a manager and whatever you know always thing events in Baghdad and you know and you had to worry about this boy's missing of that was missing girl somebody they would be around listening to us all the time you know in South Midwest. Records so that I'll be somebody would be willing to step in with that always with what she ever wanted was the base to tell. You know everything and it worked out smoothly and it just it just flowed we were introduced to Willie Mitchell. Neighbor who was trying to be a manager he introduced us to Willie Mitchell Well imagine had a band and he had a group and most of the clubs in the city. They had. When it was planned for a lot of private clubs or whatever but he introduced us to Willie and will give you all to try and we tried out for him and he said Ok let's go for so we start working with you know met some private clubs and whatever and worked out pretty well how old were you when you were going to these private to his sister and he had this. Letter being our way of of being our guardian because we traveled in and out of the city with him and he had to stand it wave a bit our guardian you know before we were able to go with him and that's where we grew up with with him it was been 1617 going ask going and what have you this is just your 2nd record I How do you feel well to tell you to the thought it was happening going to happen then at 1st records you know but circumstances situations didn't allow through all that time I was still often the music I was to learn and I was you know taken in I'll still singing and whatever because that was a part of me and I accepted that I never had any idea that you know it work out this way but I'm thankful that it did I'm thankful that you know I'm still here God can have a lot of spiritual knowledge of what I have you know in and all of this accumulated inside of me and what's coming out now as all of the age that I've been through love in the music you know and saying in the news you can enjoy on the music and I think that's what's coming out then and I'm glad that I'm able to be able to do it still have the voice to do it you know and still had. To want to continue to develop and I'm thankful for. Well I guess you can never say never because you don't never know who you are you know but I always had that desire to do it I would always there own. Music thing with. Open up a lot of shows. You know from a live shows for her and different ones that were. Traveling around as a part of the band and whatever you know. I never got away from did a little slanging was my thing and I let me ask you this you started out playing gospel music gospel then you went to this in full secular music and then you know when you take a break from your career you're still doing gospel now you're doing music again and it's interesting as a listener because let's you. Nick want to nail. The right version of it is. Your version on this record is just it's the best way I could describe it to somebody is there something about it it's push and hope there's this underlying sense of hope in the song and I don't know how you do that but I'm thinkin it's all those years in gospel music it is you know. To over a lot of things you know to view things different way. It's just the way I felt I love the song when he 1st released the song I love the song the way he did it you know I love that. All of. A particular song and. To me it's more of a motivation for things that I would done that motivated a lot of people in know and I think that today that the song sounds and grooves and feels still has an opportunity to motivate people and that's. You know what most of . It is. You know let him see it in a different light I'm happy that she took the stand sitting down and talk with us led to be here thank you for even inviting me to be. Here's more from Don Bryant live on Beale Street Caravan. To kill. A. Game. Of. Their. Week. Old turn your back on. Don't turn your back on. Turn Your Back home in the. Back. If. I go out to. Eat all the. Don't. Keep. You. On. It in it's own turf or your back onto me.
