louisiana, jo madison couldn't have imagined her future path, but in her mid 20's on a bus trip to california to visit a sister, her life took an unexpected detour as she met the man she would marry, c-j madison. jo: "remember the movie 'it happened one night'? pearce they eventually settled at a new hampshire wild animal farm. then the nugget called. they needed a new trainer for their star in-house performer, bertha, the amazing elephant. the nugget was leery of a husband-wife team, so jo's performing days were over. c-j bonded with his new charge. "he spent a lot of time with bertha, 14 hours a day. if he wasn't washing her, he was painting her, giving her a pedicure. he spent 14 hours." pearce: "she was the other woman in his life." madison: "you better believe it, she was the girl in his life." that presented no problem. in fact, jo says she and bertha shared c-j's secret, his bad heart. jo: "she got him off the stage a couple of times. he kept having these heart attacks. i think bertha knew. she knew. he was real close to bertha." c-j died in 1975. jo still lives in their sparks home, surrounded as she has often been by elephants, happy to share her thoughts on a long life. jo: "i never smoke in my life and i never drank. i had no desire to do it. when god wants to see me, he'll see me. i've had a wonderful life, a wonderful life." ed pearce kolo 8 news now the reno fire wonderful life." ed pearce kolo 8 news now the reno fire department has hired 32 new firefighters... and many of them will be trained paramedics. firefighters are often respond to medical emergencies. but many are not paramedics. that's changing for the reno fire department. this morning the city manager announced plans to advance the fire department.
