clinton spoke to a crowd of a few hundred at his wife's reno campaign headquarters. kolo 8 news now's colin lygren was at today's rally. he joins us live in studio with what the president had to say... colin? sarah... president clinton was in town today to rally the troops... so to speak... ahead to tomorrow's caucus. he touched on some of secretary clinton's campaign promises... but mainly reminded people that tomorrow... every vote counts. nats - bill clinton. wooooooooooo the nation's 42nd president... campaigning today on behalf of who he hopes is the 45th president. "she is the single best change maker i have ever known, and that is what we need... while at his reno stop.... clinton touched on the supreme court. "president obama is right to try to fill this seat on the united states supreme court... he mentioned voting rights... and the citizens "a minimum wage worker and a billionaire are equally free to spend whatever they want on politics. i used to teach constitutional law and i wouldn't even give that a passing grade." and... the nevada p-u-c's recent move against solar. "hillary is opposed to what your utility did. walking away from supporting solar energy and she will try to turn it around." but this visit... mostly about tomorrow's caucus... and the effort to get as many hillary supporters to the polls as possible. "this whole election may come down to whether you can get everybody in this part of nevada committed to her, our lady, to caucus.." most rally goers today... leaving the speech... and going out to canvas neighborhoods "we're doing everything here we can to support her." "she, i think, is going to make a wonderful president. and it is not because she is a woman, but that does not hurt." "but they will be different good steps. because hillary is her own woman. she is married to bill, but she is the one who is going to be president." "i am going to be knocking on as many doors as many doors as many calls as i can.." trip to reno was short. tonight he is expected to speak in las vegas alongside both hillary... and their daughter chelsea live in studio... colin lygren... kolo 8 news now. candidates are scheduled to come to our area-- before tuesday's g-o-p caucus. ben carson is stopping by piper's opera hosue in virginia city-- monday morning. then jeb bush and ted cruz will be in reno monday night. also on monday-- marco rubio is planning on making stops in elko, reno, and minden. donald trump will have an event at the nugget on tuesday... while cruz makes stops in fernley, minden, and carson city. you can find more information about the campaign stops, at kolo t-v dot com. ### every election year, voter i-d laws are brought up. some think the laws help to prevent election fraud. others think they disenfranchise minorities, and tip the scales in favor of republicans. south carolina is gearing up for the first vote in the south, -and it's the first state to impose a voter i-d law. kolo 8 news now zampa spoke with experts in the palmetto state. voter id laws have evolved since south carolina pioneered the requirement in 1950 - but the question has remained the same throughout the years: why are the laws really in place? 33 states have voter id laws - some are stricter than others. professor todd shaw: "it's a form of a poll tax." statistics point to a decline in racial minority turnout when id is required. university of south carolina professor todd shaw says voters shouldn't have to jump through hoops. professor todd shaw: "i don't think it's just an absolute coincidence that you sort of had these laws being erected over the last sort of decade or so as you've seen this sort of record turnout in mobilization." in many states, there's the option to fill out a provisional ballot if a voter doesn't have necessary documents. however, provisional ballots are not the same as real ones, with states having the final say in how to treat them. samuel selph is president of the richland county election commission. he says in his county there are options for everyone to vote. president samuel selph: "i don't know why these laws came into place. but i don't in richland county, that they have been an impediment to minority voters at all." and some voters say people should just follow the law. david webb: "if you want to be a good citizen and you want to vote, you should get busy and get an id." kaye webb: "don't you think if it's the law they'll make plans to tend to that?" the general election is when most say voter id has the biggest impact, when democrats and republicans go head to head. but tomorrow here in south carolina, gop voters will have to get out those id cards all the same. reporting in columbia, i'm peter zampa. you can get the most up-to-date election information anytime with mobile app. you can download if free for apple or android from your phone's app store.### the body of late justice antonin scalia is lying in repose, inside the building where he built his legacy, as a conservative legal i- con. scalia's flag-draped casket was carried up the steps of the a day of public mourning for one of the court's most influential members. the eight remaining members of the court... scalia's family... and nearly 100 former law clerks-- attended a short ceremony in the court's great hall. the reverend paul scalia, the justice's son, and a catholic priest, said prayers. and clicking on "hot topics". ### terrifying moments caught on camera... during a helicopter the struggle that trapped a teenage boy under water for several minutes. plus-- "my name is jesse. i'm a volunteer in reno with the hillary clinton presidential campaign. how are you?" meet one of the youngest people-- attending the democratic caucus tomorrow. the loophole that allows people to participate, even if they're too young to vote. for news while you're on the go, listen to our hawaii. a helicopter on a site- seeing tour over pearl harbor crashed... and the entire thing was caught on camera.... including strangers jumping into the water to help. brandi hitt shows us the dramatic video. the terrifying helicopter crash was captured on camera... daniel rose, witness: "it was a little surreal... it was very scary." a tourist chopper -- seen here -- plunging into the water near center thursday... just feet from shore. a 15-year-old boy -- among those on board -- remains in critical condition. arielle garbarino, witness: "we just turned and ran... didn't have much time before it hit." shawn winrich, witness: "ran over there as most of us did to start jumping in and helping." you can see witnesses diving into the murky water... to rescue a family of four... and the pilot. chris gardner, rescued chopper passengers: "anybody else would have done the same thing. luckily the helicopter was only in about 10 feet of water." and -- it had no doors. one by one... they all surfaced from the water. but chris gardner says the teenage boy... could not free himself from his seat belt. chris gardner, rescued chopper passengers: "got a knife and we were able to slightly cut through... and it took a long time - it was six or seven minutes." the bell 206 -- a single engine 5 seat aircraft -- was built in 1979. and the tour company -- run by genesis aviation -- is not commenting on the crash. darla thompson, witness: "we couldn't tell if it was going to hit land or if it was going to hit water." witnesses say they heard the chopper sputtering... and two large bangs... before it went down. will be on scene today. the water... and the navy is helping in the recovery process. brandi hitt -- abc news -- los angeles. an assessment of the el faro's boilers found parts that had "deteriorated severely" or needed to be replaced. that was the testimony today a coast guard hearing on the sunken cargo ship. company enigneers said: despite the issue, they believed the ship was still fit to sail. the 40-year-old vessel's boilers were scheduled for service a month after its ill-fated voyage. the el faro sank in a hurricane in october. all 33 crew members on board died.### the democratic caucus in nevada is tomorrow. tonight on kolo 8 news now we're introducing you to one of the youngest caucus goers. and get this, he's in high school. plus... a challenge against hillary clinton's run for the white house... because-- she's a woman. one man says the wording in the in less than 24 hours nevada democrats, will caucus. and republican voters will cast their ballots in the south carolina primary. most recent polls in south carolina show donald trump's leed lead shriking. he's followed by senator ted cruz who campaigned with duck dynasty star phil robertson today. on their heels: senator marco rubio, who is campaigning in columbia with south carolina governor nikki haley.. this primary could thin "i think this is at best a four-way going forward. so, it's six to four. and it could be a three- way race after tomorrow." for the democrats, polls show a dead heat between bernie sanders and hillary clinton ahead of tomorrow's caucus in nevada.### ?do you remember what it was like to be 17? you're priorities may have been cars, getting into college, or even a senior prom date. a 17-year-old we talked with, has other plans. kolo 8 news now terri russell introduces us to jesse allison, because he's taking part in the democratic caucuses tomorrow. you may be wondering how it is all possible. under democratic party rules if you are eligible to vote in november, meaning 18 years of age...you can caucus on saturday. jesse: hi my name is jesse and i am with the hillary clinton presidential campaign, how are you? despite his busy high school schedule jesse allison has found time to make calls on behalf of the clinton campaign. jesse: ok good to know.. jesse says a friend of his talked to him about the former secretary of state, he did his the candidate for him. jesse allison/17 year old: .hillary actually wasn't raised in an extremely wealthy household. she was raised by a single mother. she didn't grow up in the kind of environment you would expect somebody who was going to run for president to grow up in. jesse says his parents are poitically active, so getting involved in a presidential campaign is not so unusual. besides making phone calls on the candidates behalf, he's calso canvassed neighborhood on behalf of hillary. jesse:. i said, yea sure, and it was very rainy and cold but it was really fun. not a lot of people answered the doors but when they did it was great. he says he's excited to participate in the caucuses--his first of what he hopes will be many in his future. a future he hopes that will include the first woman president of the united states. jesse turns 18 on july 11th. after graduating from high school, he will attend unr in hopes of earning a degree in psychology. tomorrow we will
