Cam 3 wx mic search led to lockdowns at obrien middle school, stead, and silver lake a thief led police baldy area around eleven oclock. After hitting a fence, he truck and stole another vehicle, this time a chevrolet pickup. He left that one as well and ran off. Reno police, Washoe County deputies and searched around the area, near silver lake elementary. The hands of rpd as evidence. The search was stopped after no sight of the man for two hours. No description of the thief has been released, but police are on the lookout. One cab driver beaten and robbed in sparks, another shot and killed in reno. It happened within a 24 hour period in november of 2014. Kolo 8 news nows ed pearce has been following these cases from the beginning. Ed, the two crimes were never linked back then, but today they are. One man has now been charged in both crimes. This is something of a surprise. November 9, 2014 investigators in sparks and reno were each pursuing Violent Crimes against cab drivers. Seen on security footage hailed a cab at the grand sierra resort, apparently telling the driver to take her to a location down a darkened side street two masked men robbed and beat him at gunpoint. Later that night, 55 year old sami amin picked up a fare in south reno, drove him to the 900 block of wheeler avenue, where he was shot. Amin died later at a local hospital. Investigators in both cities had belonging to 27 year old John Austin Orris was found in amins cab. He was traced to an address within a block of the murder scene. Within five days they had issued an arrest warrant. Eight days later he was located in california where he had been arrested on unrelated domestic battery charges. Meanwhile, within days their counterparts in sparks had arrested 26 year old Miguel Padilla and a women on the robbery case. Apparently lacking sufficient evidence neither were brought to trial. And other than the obvious were never linkeduntil now. As orris appeared for a Pretrial Hearing in the murder cases it was learned hed also been charged along with padilla for the sparks robbery and beating. A year ago Sparks Police said they were still looking for the woman who hailed the cab at the grand sierra. What, if any, role she may have played in the outcome of these parallel investigations isnt known. So, John Austin Orris, now 28 is charged with the robbery and murder of sami amin. The trial date was reset this morning for august first. He and Miguel Padilla are charged with the robbery and beating of the other cab driver. No trial date has been set. New developments tonight on a stead robbery. Reno police now have a suspect in custody. Police say 18yearold kanssandra portillo of reno robbed the jacksons on stead boulevard early sunday morning. Portillo was identified after investigators released surveillance detectives say she admitted to the robbery during an interview. Police dont think there is a connection between this robbery and a similar one in stead yesterday morning. A former El Dorado County sheriffs deputy has pleaded guilty to drug trafficking. 48yearold mark zlendick. Who worked on a drug task force. Was arrested at his gardnerville home last may. He was accused of stealing meth and cocaine from an evidence locker in south lake tahoe. The guilty plea allows zlendick to avoid a potential life sentence. Hell face a sentence of 10 to 25 years when he is sentened in El Dorado County court, in april. When a juvenile commits a major crime like murder or Sexual Assault with substantial bodily harm, many people believe the sentence should fit the crime. That may include life without the possiblity of parole. But a Supreme Court ruling changes past instances where the original juvenile inmate has already served decades in prison. Kolo 8 news now Terri Russell joins us with a could mean here in our area. Here in nevada there are currently no juvenile inmates who are serving life in prison without the possibility of parole. That doesnt mean it couldnt happen, but with recent us Supreme Court rulings, it may be less likely. Back in 1985 reno teen, mary yates was sentenced with two life sentences with the possibility of parole for helping plan the murder of her mother jeanne. Mary yates was released from a Nevada State Prison in the early 2000s. In december of 200011 13 year old jose cruz was possiblity of parole for fatally shooting a man on california avenue after the man tried to prevent his friends purse from getting stolen by cruz and two other defendants. Egan walker Washoe District Court overwhelmingly, people who go to prison, leave prison at some point. According to nevada state law, cruz will serve approximatley 15 years before he will be eligible for parole. Nevadas law arent as tough as other states. Some even require a 40 year sentence before the 200012 stated juveniles sentenced to life without the possibility of parole was cruel and unusual punishment. While most states took that ruling as retroactive. Others, like louisiana, did not. Last december louisiana inmate Henry Montgomery asked the court to look at his case. Convicted at 17 for killing a sheriffs deputy, the 69 year old montgomery says his rehabilitation in prison should allow him to be considered for parole. Egan walker Washoe District Court and the Supreme Court said the answer to that question is yes. Judge walker says a decade worth of rulings from the Supreme Court indicate juveniles who commit major crimes may in the future, be treated differently by the court system. Justice Anthony Kennedy has said childrens diminished culpability and heightened capacity for change, cast doubt on mandatory sentences. , he added the most punitive sentences for juveniles will be uncommon. Judge walker says its counter intuitive, but harsh sentences just make most juveniles more harsh. Knowing they are inevitably going to come out, to have a safer community, youve gotta address them in ways that work. And what we know is, punitive, retrobutive things dont work with kids. This isnt to say the worst of the worst wont have to serve longer sentences when compared to other juvenile offenders. Justice kennedy has said the rare juvenile offender may not be helped by rehabilitation, and life without parole is justified. Terri russell kolo 8 news now. A Civil Rights Group has filed a lawsuit, challenging a law requiring sex offenders, to be identified on their passports. President obama signed the International Megans law bill, into law yesterday. California reform sex offender laws filed the lawsuit, challenging the law. It requires the secretary of state, to add unique identifiers to the passports of all registered sex offenders. The lawsuit claims a passport symbol that identifies an individual, as a registered sex that person at significant risk. Is getting its own license plate. A professor at the university of nebraska has figured out how. As joe chiodo explains, a new type of concrete could soon make life easier and safer for anyone who has to deal with the snow. Youve been working on a project with passion for 10 or 15 years, and finally people recognize the value of this technology. Not many people have a passion for snow but unl professor dr. Chris tuan does, at least when it comes to getting rid of it. So we started in 97 and after all these years. Hes finally found a way to keep it off the ground. Outside this lab at unl is where the magic happens. We can go in here. 200squarefoot slab of concrete created by dr. Tuan heats up and melts ice in a safe way. When they see the time lapse video, they were all awed. This time lapse was from omahas last big snow storm about a week ago. Notice the slab of conductive concrete compared to the sidewalk next to it. The four inches of snow that day didnt stand a chance. So its just high enough to melt the ice and snow. The power needed, as little as comes from an outlet in your home. The electricity produced, safe to the touch. The ingredients, 80 percent concrete, 20 percent steel fibers and carbon particles. You dont have to spread road salt or deicing chemicals. But getting all of that right didnt come easy. Just ask graduate student mitchell kowalewski. Its also been physically project. But when it finally worked, dr. Tuan had a feeling. Yeah, it was electrifying. That this was something big. No pun intended. I do believe it would change roads in the future. Right now the technology isnt feasible to use on interstates and long roads. But intersections, off ramps, steep hills, and driveways are all possibilities. The faa is now testing the mixture. If theyre impressed, they will then use it for the tarmac of a major airport to allow gates to be cleared more efficiently during snow delays. Dr. Tuan hopes to one day soon make this Technology Available to the public. So one day you may be able to see this happen on your driveway right outside your home.
