since the 1950's. the southeast connector is no longer just a line on a map. it's scheduled to open-- in december of 20-17. kolo 8 news now's paul harris attended a regional transportation commission information seminar by the airport today-- and joins us now. noah many of the residents who visited the seminar that i talked to today... told me just because the road is a reality does not mean they are happy about it. many expressed environmental and noise concerns as the road will link sparks to south reno. r-t-c says they have cleared about three point seven million pounds of trash and debris from the construction sites. officials feel this 300 million dollar project will actually benefit the area when it is completed. when we are done we will have a much cleaner healthier environment. we will be taking seven acres of unhealthy wetlands and converting that into 80 acres self sustaining wetland complex that is a benefit for everyone to enjoy." in addition to restoring the wetlands.. r-t-c is overseeing the planting about 600 new trees and removing invasive weeds. officials estimate this phase of the project 250 jobs. now the event is going on tonight... till about 7 p-m ... just head to the best western... right across the street from the reno-tahoe international airport. paul harris... kolo 8 news now. we have a correction to a story we reported on tuesday evening involving a lawsuit against the east fork fire protection district in douglas county. we incorrectly reported that the suit insurance. allstate was the insurance company for the plaintiffs and the insurance settlement paid the attorney fees. a natural gas leak in southern california that lasted for months... is finally plugged. the leak started back in october and drove thousands of people from their los angeles county homes. it was blamed for a variety of symptoms including headaches and nausea. southern california gas company, tried to stop the leack by forcing mud into the well, but the effort failed. it had to drill a second well that intercepted the pipe, a mile and a half underground. the well is not permanently sealed, but if the plug holds-- it will be cemented closed. the utility estimates the leak cost the at least a quarter-billion dollars. ### the u-s senate is saying "no" to taxing internet access. a new trade bill was passed today. included in it was a section preventing state and local government from taxing internet access. the bill already passed the house and is on the way to president obama's desk. he is expected to sign it two native american tribes, are opposing the plan to legalize fantasy sports betting in california. the san manuel band of mission indians, and the morongo band of mission indians, have wrote letters to the bill's sponsor. the tribes argue-- the proposal moved through the legislature with little, to no deliberation. the proposal would impose an income tax on fantasy winnings, and it needs support from two-thirds of lawmakers. ### a month-long standoff in oregon is finally over. the remaining occupiers turning themselves in peacefully to federal authorities today... after a chaotic and emotional showdown. brandi hitt has the story. "you're gonna come out with your hands up!" "no we're not!" a tense ending to a more than 40-day standoff -- inside this national wildlife refuge? in oregon. first three of the final four occupiers turned themselves in... after negotiating with federal agents. "coming out!" their surrender -- streamed phone call. "it looks like they got guns pointed at us... i don't know. "are they being gentle?" "yeah." nevada assemblywoman -- michele fiore -- also stepping in. michele fiore, nevada assemblywoman: "i'm here... i'm here with you..." over the phone... the ranchers' rights supporter... pleaded with the group to surrender. michele fiore, nevada assemblywoman: "we don't need our weapons right now... they cannot fire upon you with the world watching." the militia occupying the site... is demanding the federal government turn over public lands... to local control. last month... the standoff's leaders were arrested... during a traffic stop. group spokesman -- lavoy finicum -- shot and killed... after a police chase. investigators say he had reached for a gun. "do the right thing alright?" "what the right thing is to kill us?" after another hour of negotiations... the final man holed-up inside... gave up - peacefully. "i'm walking towards them right now."
