Back in november of 2014 one cab driver was beaten and robbed, another shot and killed. At the time, investigators couldnt say if the two crimes were linked. But now one man is charged for both crimes. John austin orris was arrested last year for the robbery murder of cab driver sami amin. Investigators say orris shot amin after being driven to a location on wheeler street in reno. He was arrested eight days later in california and today appeared in court briefly for a pretrial hearing. At that hearing we learned he has also been charged with the robbery and beating of a cab driver near baldinis in sparks along with another man miguel padilla. The trial on the murder charge was set for august. No date has been set on the robbery charge. A woman is behind bars for charges she robbed a convenience store. Early sunday morning to the Jacksons Convenience store on stead boulevard. The suspect was identified as 18yearold Kassandra Portillo of reno. Police believe there is a connection between this robbery and yesterdays robbery of the stead maverick. When it comes to serious criminal cases, should juveniles be treated differently than adults . The Surpeme Court has ruled on these cases saying kids serving life in prison without the possibility of parole must be considered for parole after serving time on their sentences. Here in nevada juveniles can be sentenced to life without the possiblity of parole if they are convicted of certain category a felonies. There are no juveniles in the state serving such a sentence right now. A Supreme Court ruling out of louisana though will impact states who wont examine prior cases where inmates were sentenced to life without as kids.
