Fernando hello. Im fernando espuelas. Welcome to matter of fact. In the wake of the mass shooting in orlando, florida, we are forced to ask have americas leaders let us down . The slaughter of an overwhelming number of people at an lgbt nightclub in orlando reveals our nations strategic weakness, the seeming lack of capacity to keep us safe from attacks by so called lone wolf terrorists. Despite his 911 call, pledging allegiance to isis, the shooters rampage appears to be an individual act with complicated motives Nadia Oweidat is entrenched in the battle to defeat the root causes of islamic extremism. Doctor, welcome to the program. Ms. Oweidat thank you. Fernando so this is almost a philosophical question but with very Practical Applications how do we fight an idea like radical islamic violence . Ms. Oweidat you can only fight an idea with an idea. You cannot kill an idea with weapons, with drones, essentially its about persuasion. So a lot of young people, the middle east where it originates, 80 percent of the population is under 40 years old. So its a very young place, its a place where good education is practically obsolete. So a lot of people are getting radicalized online because there is no safe place for people physically to congregate, to play, to read, to play sports so they go online. Online is not only the space where radical ideas are, but also the place where the solution is and this where how do you fight an idea . Well you have a captive audience online. Arabic speakers are the most engaged online in the world. They have the highest per capita subscription to facebook because we dont have debates in our classrooms, we cant ask questions, but that debate is taking place on facebook. I have met many extremo studied the al qaeda cell in alexandria, egypt was completely radicalized online but also de radicalized online. Fernando how can that be applied . Thats one person, right . How can th . T donzefo bout spere people propaganda be place where they are getting deradicalized. This is where the opportunity is. Its about persuasion. People want to care about something higher than themselves. Fernando so how much of this problem of International Terrorism based on this fallacy of islam, malinterpreted, how much is caused by the repression of these semi secular regimes . Ms. Oweidat i mean, the challenge of extremism and terrorism is destabilizing the entire global community. If you think of the us spends 16. 6 billion dollars every year, and its not even making a dent. If you were advising president obama, what would be your threepoint program . Whs luch ndre, thousandsas with online that i am aware of, of people within these cultures who know the culture, the history, the sensitivity of these communities, who are fighting this ideological war. Former extremists, who now have youtube channels, who are running for their lives because extremists want to kill them. So the greatest thing we can do is empower local voices, empower local influencers, many of them have maybe hundreds of thousands, some have tens of thousands, but many of them could go viral, some have a few thousands or even hundreds, depending on how much support they have. The story i hear from activists all over the world, somebody in iraq contacted me, they made a video and it got 3 million hits. And he is like, i wish i could get support so i could just make videos because there is a captive audience online and that is an opportunity. Fernando dr. Thank you so much, really appreciate your insights. Thank you for coming today. Coming up, can we stop the killing . This former republican governor want bear arms. I do not see a reason for a 15 load gun in the hands of anyone. And, americas doctor issues a warning what causes people to have so much anger in themselves . Can we reverse the deadly trend . Fernando responding to the orlando shootings, former new jersey governor Christie Todd whitman, a moderate republican, asks in a pointed oped who, besides Law Enforcement and the military, really needs a weapon designed for the battlefield . The governors views on gun control put her at odds with most republicans in office. Governor, welcome to the program. Governor whitman its a pleasure to be with you. Fernando thank you. In your view, what would be a sane approach to gun control . Governor whitman i think its obvious that most people want and would be comfortable with having a background check before you can buy a gun. That those who are on a terrorist watch list, or nofly list shouldnt be able to acquire weapons and frankly, as someone who owns shot guns and has hunted, i dont see reason for anything, for a 15 load gun in the hands of anyone. Fully automatic guns belong in the hands of the police and military and no one else. We dont need them in their hands of criminals or honest people who might take action they otherwise would not consider when they have a 15 round magazine. Minority that is a point of view in the Republican Party. What will move the needle in terms of members of Congress Moving forward with some policy as you suggest . Governor whitman i think the public has to let it be known. Yes, every poll tells you the 90 percent of the American People would be comfortable with these sorts of steps being taken. And its been because the nra has been able to get its members to effectively, using the process we have, to engage with their representatives and their congressman and senators saying dont touch 2nd amendment, even though this is not going to take away the rights of people to bear arms, to have some sensible controls. So the public has to decide that they are going to get involved too and not just answer pollsters, but actually reach out to the people who are going to making the decisions, who are going to be voting. Fernando you are making a pragmatic argument. As you know the debate has devolved into ideologies, rather absolute ideologies, what do you think can bring the two sides together to have a conversation about what is best for the country . Governor whitman if what happened in stony at sandy hook didnt do it, orlando doesnt do it, i think we have now reached the tipping point. I certainly hope so. I know the argument goes, well guns dont kill people, people kill people but people. Thats true, but people with automatic weapons kill more people than people who have a shotgun, pistol or a knife. Fernando governor, thank you, i appreciate your time. The orlando mass killer was clearly emotionally unstable. His exwife has reported that he was erratic, violent, and often irrational. He was also legally armed with an Assault Rifle and a 9millimeter handgun. The u. S. Surgeon general says that gun violence is a Public Health threat that needs to be fully understood in order to deal with it effectively. Dr. Murthy thank you so much for joining us. Dr. Murthy of course, im so glad to be here. Fernando gun violence, very much front and center in the nations conscious, something that has plagued the country, some 30 thousand gun deaths a year, what do we know about it . What is the info we have available to us to understand why our country has such high levels of violence . Dr. Murthy we know that gun violence is devastating families and communities across america. As a physician i have cared for many patients who were the victims of gun violence and i have seen just how damaging that can be. Not just in moment, but also for years after. These people suffer trauma, both mental and physical trauma that comes with gun violence. This has been a terrible problem. We dont know enough about gun violence and we dont know how to solve it and part of the reason is that as a country we under invest in research when it comes to looking at ways to tackle gun violence. Fernando but thats on purpose right . There is actually a ban on the cdc from congress to prevent them from researching gun violence. Is that correct . Dr. Murthy well what we see is if you look at cancer, diabetes and cardio vascular disease, we care about reducing those deaths from those illnesses so we invest in research to understand what causes them and what treatments might work in reducing what causes those diseases and the deaths related to them. We dont do the same with gun violence. Most importantly, and something we dont think about often, we have to address Emotional Wellbeing in our country. We have to ask ourselves, what causes people to have so much anger in , when we look at that we realize we have a great degree of isolation and frustration in our country. I used to say often when i visited patients in boston, the most common disease was not heart disease, but it was isolation, social disconnection. We have to address that. There are programs that are working on improving wellbeing, and having a dramatic impact on reducing violence so part of my goal is to understand what the scientifically driven tools are that can improve Emotional Wellbeing so we can not only decrease violence, but we can also improve health, educational performance and workplace performance as well. Fernando dr. Murthy thank you for joining me today. The nations Largest Group of doctors, the american medical association, voted to call gun violence a Public Health crisis at its annual meeting this past week. The ama will now Push Congress to overturn legislation preventing the cdc from conducting gun violence research. Up next, her crusades have spanned eight decades this is the largest march ever. And earned her the medal of freedom. Why she says she cant give up the fight just yet. And, giving comfort. I held and hugged family members and parents. Can the emotions in orlando lead the nation toward healing . Fernando the president ial medal of freedom is the highest civilian award in the u. S. It is given to people who have made extraordinary contributions to our national interests. Dolores huerta has made that contribution as an advocate for workers, immigrants, and women. She may be best known as cofounder of the united farm workers with cesar chavez. She is now vigorously campaigning for Hillary Clinton and other democratic candidates. Dolores welcome to the program. Ms. Huerta thank you fernando thank you. You recently said that trump is spreading hatred. What did you mean by that . Ms. Huerta when he announced his campaign, the first thing he did was attack mexicans. Hes going to build a wall across the border and mexico would pay for it. Then he attacked muslims, he ridicules people who are disabled, very misogynist in terms of how he talks about women and even the gay community. When we think of all that hatred, the rhetoric with so much hatred in it, it has consequences. Fernando we have had 8 years of obama with certain expectations. We know based on data that salaries havent gone up, middle class is stuck. What makes you think a Hillary Clinton presidency would change that dynamic to help the middle class . Have a lot of hope that she will be able to build on his legacy, on the Affordable Care act, raising minimum wage and supporting our labor unions which has also been under attack. The president had a Republican Congress and senate so couldnt accomplish everything that he wanted to accomplish. Fernando there is a lot of frustration in the Hispanic Community in terms of immigration but there are other frustrations as well. Democrats have said that they want to support hispanic americans, yet when elections come, they do a very poor job of turning out hispanic americans. Do you think its going to be different in 2016 . Ms. Huerta i think we have already seen that. We know the Voter Registration of latinos has gone up substantially. We know that people are becoming citizens because of trumps attacks on latino community. Fernando some people are saying that what is happening with the Trump Campaign and with the rhetoric that is hostile to hispanics in general is causing a realignment very similar to what happened in the 1960s with African Americans moving from the Republican Party to the democratic party. Do you see that . Is there evidence of that . Ms. Huerta absolutely. You see that everywhere you go. I do a lot of Spanish Television and radio and the people are incensed, even children, they say we hate trump. So the message has gone out there. I think the rest of the American Public has to realize how dangerous this is and we have to attack the racism, the homophobia, the misogyny in our society. We have to start at kindergarten, because this racism that permeates our society is so damaging and costly to america and we see it played out now with mass murders like in florida and other places in the south. I like remind people hitler was elected to office. It was not a military coup, he was elected to office. People have to realize how dangerous a candidate like trump is and what he can do to our society of the United States. Not only that, but as leader of the free world, how dangerous his candidacy is and how dangerous he would be as a president. Fernando dolores, thank you so much for joining me today. Coming up next, acts of compassion. We cannot be afraid. We are not going to be afraid. Fernando when the gunman opened fire inside the orlando nightclub pulse, a stunning number of lives came to a tragic end as this oasis for the Lgbt Community was riddled with bullets. Fathers, mothers, an army reservist, a cancer survivor. Americans. They came to dance and celebrate life. Now they are victims. The Lgbt Community has been a frequent target of violence. According to the fbi, about 20 percent of all hate crimes reported involve people targeted for their Sexual Orientation or gender identity. As the nation grapples with the hot button issues in our political culture, such as the war on terror, islamophobia, homophobia, and gun control, the people of orlando grapple with extreme loss. Their grief is being met in equal measure by acts of comfort. Totally innocent lives. , anyonethe grace of god of us could have been there. The same determination of a man who died here who traveled the world, mindful of the risks as a gay man, but who spoke all of us when he said we cannot be afraid. We are not going to be afraid. Share your thoughts and tweets at matteroffact. Tv. Check our website to view videos from all our programs. When we return, why are terrorists legally buying guns in america . Fernando has his closing thoughts on orlando. People love my portobello mushroom buttery jack, made with portobello mushrooms, grilled onions, and garlic herb butter. Ever wonder how i came up with it . Well. Actually, i came up with it at the water cooler. But i thought youd like this cowboy story better. The portobello mushroom buttery jack is back. Part of the buttery jack family. Taste it before its gone. Fernando the news from orlando hit like a tornado. A mass killer, variously described as a terrorist, bipolar and a wifeabuser in our midst. Only the official investigation will tell us why this man destroyed so many lives. And in what is a stunning indictment of our elected leaders, the killer had been on an fbi terror watch list, investigated twice for possible connections to terrorists, yet he legally bought semiautomatic weapons, machines of death with shocking power. This was not some bureaucratic messup. The killers recent weapons purchases were possibly enabled by the United States congress. For example, in december the senate voted down a bill that would have kept potential terrorists from legally buying weapons. I have yet to hear one rational argument for allowing potential terrorists to easily buy semiautomatic weapons. What i have heard are the intellectually corrupt excuses of men and women in our congress. However, we should not despair over our feckless representatives in november we will elect new leaders. But when we vote, we should remember that president George Washington was right when he said few men have virtue to withstand the highest bidder. Im fernando espuelas. Have a peaceful week.
