Capsized sailboat. Good evening. Im dan ashley. And im ama daetz. We sent out an alert to the abc7 news app as this was happening. We also streamed it live through the app. The sailboat capsized about 2 30 this afternoon. Only sky 7 was overhead as three people were pulled from San Francisco bay. The water temperature is about 55 degrees. So cold it can be dangerous. Kate larson is live with the details. Kate . Reporter well, dan, ama, those boaters were lucky they were rescued they were. They launched here, and they got about a mile into the bay when the coast guard says their sailboat capsized. I watched as the three men after being treated by paramedics, walked into an ambulance. They did appear okay. But first, lets go ahead and take a look at that video from sky 7 earlier this afternoon. The helicopter was overhead during todays very timely rescue. About five minutes after the men capsized, a fleet ferry in the area was able to rescue one of the three boaters, who was able to grab a life preserver ring and swim to the boat. Todays wind and current made it all very difficult. About five, ten minutes later, the coast guard showed up and got a lot closer to the sinking sailboat, which you can see hours ago was almost completely submerged. They were able to rescue the other two boaters. According to the coast guard, the men were suffering from mild hypothermia, and they do not believe they had proper safety gear or clothing. The initial response, we were told they were not wearing life jackets, that was passed to us. To the public, please wear your life jackets and proper clothing. The bay water is usually much colder than air temperature. Reporter after being treated and evaluated by paramedics, the boaters were escorted to an ambulance here. The men declined to interview but appeared to be okay. The coast guard agreed that they did check out. Ive been in touch with the blue and gold fleet, and they tell me that there was a ferry full of passengers and that their captain, jim lily, and other crew members, saw the men were in trouble, flapping their arms around. They sprang into action and were able to rescue the one boater. Im told by the Ferry Company they do man overboard training frequently, so it looked like that helped out a lot in this case. Thats the latest. Im kate larson, abc7 news. Back to you. Kate, thank you so much. This rescue was incredible to watch. Only sky 7 was overhead as it all happened.
