mother's day. right now fire fighters putting out hot spots at the construction site on san pablo avenue in emeryville. many neighboring families have been let back into their homes but there is still a lot of work to be done. >> abc7 news reporter melanie woodrow is live in emeryville with the latest on this. melanie? >> reporter: you can see the devastation behind me. there are some residents that have power restored, but most of them are still waiting on pg&e crews. we have seen out here today diligently working to restore that power. here is some video to show you, first you can see a large generator that has been set up. one of the buildings across the street, we believe there were elderly residents in that building. those residents now have power because of that generator. otherwise, many others as i mentioned are waiting on pg&e. here is some video of the fire as it burned in the early morning hours on saturday. one of the biggest concerns overnight into today was a precarious crane that looked like it might fall. emeryville's vice mayor shared video with us of workers doing what he called a controlled fall overnight just before 1:00 a.m. you can see the crane carefully being brought down. >> they attached 1 1/2 inch thick cable to the apparatus and they in a very controlled manner pulled it south of the property away from the residents. we took the precautions to have residents moved away from the tem ters of the buildings in case the crane would snap and there were no residents nearby. >> reporter: we also talked to the owner of the nearby showers of flowers. he is a florist who is experiencing a drought of customers this mother's day. he says he will take all of the flowers that he didn't sell today and donate them. meantime, atf investigators are expected on-site, and the developer who has said that he believes this is arson again, the second fire here in ten months is now also saying he will rebuild a third time. live in emeryville, melanie woodrow, abc7 news. >> all right, thank you, melanie. another fire, this time in san francisco, forced ten people out of their homes. it started late this afternoon on the deck of the home about half a block from balboa high school. drivers on i-280 saw puffs of smoke from the home. fire fighters quickly put it out and nobody was hurt. >> a quiet mother's day morning shattered by the sounds of rapid gun fire at about 9:30 this morning, gun men in one car firing shots at another car on polk street in russian hill. cornell bernard is live in san francisco with the story. cornell? >> reporter: yeah, eric, nobody hurt, but some scary moments for sure in this russian hill neighborhood. bullets flying on polk street. one shattering the windshield of this car. a neighbor caught the chase and the shooting on video. >> i dropped down immediately and it was two cars chasing each other. >> reporter: she took cover with her dog when shots rang out on polk street. it was right at 9:30 and i heard pop, pop, pop, pop, pop. >> reporter: michael kelly's home security camera captured this, a sedan being fired on from a red bmw coupe, from lombard to bay. a stray bullet shattered this audi parked on the street. police investigators closed two blocks, counting shell casings, scattered in the street. >> i would guess i heard at least 10 or 11 bullets. >> reporter: kevin saw the action from his apartment window. >> i saw two cars side by side speeds, continuous bullets ringing out. >> reporter: take a close look. from the video you can see a gun pointed out the window of the red bmw. >> i heard the gunshots. i looked up and i saw the gun still cocked out of the car. >> reporter: lynn said the two cars sped away. did you believe what you were seeing here? >> no. actually, i wasn't prepared for that this morning. on mother's day, really? >> reporter: police are looking for the two suspect cars. it is unknown if anyone in the gray sedan was injured. >> it is always nice and quiet. that's what surprised me. >> reporter: police are reviewing this surveillance footage. they don't know what led up to the violence. in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> police in fremont want to know if alcohol played a role in the crash that killed an 18-year-old woman and badly injured her mother. investigators believe the women made a left turn in a toyota when they were chevy on fremont boulevard near paseo padre parkway. the chevy may have run a red light. two men in the chevy had minor injuries. >> new video shows moments right before the crash that killed a sheriff's deputy and a community service officer in modesto. you can see the suv speeding by followed by a cloud of dust before it went airborne, landed on top of the dumpster and burst into flames. the video from the surveillance camera at a nearby business, there was a burglary calling. jason was training michelle johnson, a non-sworn officer to be the community service officer for the department. >> we are a big department, but we are still small enough we all know each other. it's definitely -- it's hard. >> an accident investigation team from the chp is working to try and figure out what exactly caused that crash. >> on to happier news now, it was a beautiful mother's day for much of the bay area. not everyone saw sunny skies. a viewer in brentwood showed heavy rain with a bit of hail. let's get to meteorologist drew tuma for more. drew? >> live doppler 7 showing you right now the showers had pretty much dissipated. i want to show you we had one shower just north of napa a couple hours ago, was giving way to a few lightning strikes. it has now dissipated. there is that hail in the small region. south bay had a couple of light showers. this was the view the majority of the region saw today, bright blue skies, but it was a windy afternoon once again. the wind will stick with us the next 24 hours, they will usher in very warm temperatures shortly. wee detail the numbers in the accuweather forecast in just a few minutes, guys. >> all right, thank you, drew. the former director of national intelligence says u.s. government institutions are under assault. and he says some of that is coming straight from the top. reporter andrew spencer has more about the fallout over the fbi director's firing. >> the developments of the past week are very bother some, very disturbing to me. >> reporter: james clapper former director of national intelligence under president obama said many institutions are under attack. >> both externally, and that's the big news here is the russian interference in our election system. and i think as well our institutions are under assault internally. >> internally from the president? >> exactly. >> reporter: clapper says he feels the government's system of checks and balances is eroding. the criticism falls nearly a week of backlash over the firing of now former fbi director james comey. u.s. ambassador nikki haley defended that move on abc7's ths week. >> the president can hire or fire anyone he likes. whether you agree with it it's the truth. what he's trying to do is figure out his own team, are there better ways he could do that, that is for everybody else to decide. >> reporter: he might choose his replacement for comey from a short list before leaving for his first overseas trip on friday. >> there are people very well known, highest level. >> next week possibly? vulnerability that allows that worm to spread. right now security experts say to download them immediately. >> next year a project to clean up the great pacific garbage patch will launch from the san francisco bay. a dutch foundation called the ocean clean up has a plan to sweep up the plastic that's killing ocean life. it will use dozens of half mile screens that will move with the current to track visible and microscopic plastic. the project will cost tens of millions of dollars and take a decade to finish, but it's expected to remove half of the plastic. the ocean clean up is raising money to pay for it. >> in san jose, look how kabuki kool. five orphan coyote cubs are recovering after a dramatic rescue. a man who lives in the almaden neighborhood noticed the frightened pups and called wildlife emergency services. they posted this video rescuers using a crow bar to remove a rock one was hiding under and lifting the can you be to safety. the wildlife center is treating them for severe dehydration until they're well enough to be released back into the wild. so cute. >> a lot of moms are feeling pampered and well fed today as they should. that is especially true for a francisco were treated to some sweet violin music and a home cooked meal today. the hamilton family shelter in the tenderloin brought in chefs from the tv show dad's that cook to make a special brunch region. 58 in san francisco right now, 61 that current number in oakland. 64 in san jose. 67 in concord and santa rosa right now. the mild spot, only 68 degrees. the reason we're on the cool side, those winds continue to be active gusting to 32 right now, sfo, 20 an car santa rosa, same in fairfield coming off the cool ocean water, bringing us that cool air overhead as well. live doppler 7 along with satellite, the reason why for the wind and also the snow showers in tahoe, there is an area of low pressure to the east that counter clockwise spin kicking up the wind. the problem, this thing is going to take its time exiting the next 24 hours. the breeze will stay with us overnight tonight. so, here is the call. temperatures dropping into the mid 40s to low 50s. north bay will have clear skies, plenty of starz. in the south bay a couple cloudy skies around san jose, overnight low of 50 degrees. tomorrow through monday, another bright looking day but it is also another windy afternoon. those winds once again going to be gusting 15 to 35 miles per hour. temperatures once again below normal, about 68 in san jose, 60 in san francisco, 72 in napa. future weather as we go to tuesday, tuesday is going to be a rather cloudy day. there is a chance we could have a spot sprinkle. best chance probably the north bay. however, once we get that system out of here on wednesday, that's going to allow warmer air to filter in. in fact, future tracker temperatures by friday look how we're going to end this week. temperatures well above normal for this time of year. it turns hot, not only inland with 90s and 80s, but even right along the coast, temperatures will go into the 70s so high of 74 in san francisco, low 80s in oakland, near 90 in san jose, and the low 90s inland. if you like summer heat it's on the way. accuweather seven-day forecast sunny and windy for monday. there is a chance of sprinkle on tuesday. wednesday, we get the clouds out of here, spring beauty, temperatures take off, hot on friday no matter where you live. then we'll start to cool off the coast into the weekend. but we're still warm inland. >> announcer: now abc7 news sports with larry beil.
