I tell them, right here, the embarcadero is a front row seat. San Francisco Police will be along any time to put up the barricades to control the crowds. Crowds of people who have today off who are going to celebrate. But for some businesses in San Francisco, its the busiest day of the year. Its a whole lot of love and there are a lot of secrets i cant tell you about. Its a southern tradition to eat black eyed peas and Collard Greens on new years day for luck and prosperity. At this soul food restaurant, theyll go through about 50 pounds of peas. We make sure we have plenty of black eyed peas and we dont want to turn away anyones good luck for the new years. The morning of new years is no party at San Franciscos balloon magic. Its all work. My heart is beating really fast. Its very busy today. Managing all the people, all the locations. In two days, about 20 workers will have turned out some 25,000 balloons for clubs, restaurants, and parties. They average about 300 an hour. When it comes to fireworks, this barge provides plenty of bang for your buck. A few tons of explosives will create a 15minute display over the bay. I always like to encourage people to come on out. Its San Francisco, big city, time to celebrate and bring in 2016 with a bang. To keep everyone safe, the coast guard will not allow any water craft within a thousand feet of the barge during the show. We want everybody to have fun, but with the safety zone, we ensure that the public stays out of a potential zone for accidents. Back here on land, san Francisco Police say they will have extra officers out of patrol and theyre asking everyone to be aware of their surroundings. If you see something, say something. Police believe isis suicide bombers wanted to attack the station. Police asked people to stay away from that station and one other. There have been no injuries or arrests. Were getting a look tonight at the new video of an explosion in dubai after a massive hotel fire just minutes before their new year. People were so surprised. What a scene. The tower is 63 stories tall. Amazingly, no one was seriously hurt. You can see the celebratory fireworks went on anyway, just blocks away from the fire. A turf car continues tonight in a david versus goliath struggle between the nfl and a santa clara Youth Soccer League. A judge decided not to grant a restraining order that would prevent the nfl from using a soccer field. David louis is live in santa clara with the latest. The nfl is not commenting whether or not this legal fight will hurt future bids in the bay area to attract a super bowl. The Youth Soccer League in a bid to derail a preexisting agreement. The deal was sealed in march of 2013. The city of santa clara turns over this youth soccer field next monday for super bowl 50 to be used for security, media, and production. We have a contract with the nfl. If we dont deliver that field, its our belief that well be in breach. So on monday, youll deliver the keys to that field . Thats our plan at this point. Reporter however, the Youth Soccer League went to court to get a temporary restraining order. Instead, there will be a hearing next wednesday for a preliminary injunction. The judge says he hopes the nfl wont do anything to the field until he rules. An 8yearold who plays on that field isnt happy. I dont like it. I dont like it. Dont like it. Reporter the niners have promised to join the nfl in restoring the grass field, but the deal is between the city and the nfl. The nfl says it will protect the park. The fields will be covered by plastic fabrication to avoid any direct load on the surface. There is no digging or paving on the playing fields. The leagues Attorney Says the delay isnt a bad thing. The one thing that judges want is some time to think about a case. Especially when there are very big consequences to it. Reporter it may also give the two sides more time to bolster their arguments. A silver alert is in alert for a retired air force captain who disappeared yesterday. 82yearold andy stathos of brentwood was supposed to visit family in san jose, but he never arrived to his destination and hasnt been heard from since. He suffers from a medical condition and may become disoriented. If you know where he might be or think youve seen him, call brentwood police. A water leak is causing problems in San Francisco. Sky 7 hd was over the leak in the citys sunset district around 4 30. Public works crews say service to just one house is affected and there has not been any property damage. Crews are going to wait until saturday to fix a sinkhole in the noe valley because they need to bring in special safety equipment. This is at church street, near jersey street. For now, crews are putting a plate over that hole. Muny riders will have to put a shuttle over the program until the program is fixed. Police officers found a 5monthold German Shepherd dead at his home. Abc 7 news report eer Leanne Menendez joins us live. Reporter very sad story. This happened very late on tuesday night. A neighbor called 911 after hearing the puppy yelping, and then there was silence. Now, police now say the dog was slammed to the ground repeatedly. What happened in inside this house has shocked this quiet napa neighborhood. That evening, about 11 45, our dispatch center received a call that a neighbor who lived in the 1,100 block of mesa drive had been beating his dog and they believed it was deceased. Nicolas louise and his wife did not answer the door that night, so police waited outside, with a search warrant in hand at 8 30 the next morning, the couple finally allowed police in. They found the 5monthold German Shepherd dead in the laundry room wrapped in a plastic bag. He indicated that he lost control and basically injured the animal as a result of that. Reporter a few neighbors had heard the dog crying before, but never suspected any kind of abuse. Terrible. Im just sickened by it. We have two dogs ourselves, and, you know, the pets are part of our family. Reporter luis was immediately arrested. Police officers were surprised to find out that he is a firefighter with the santa clara fire department. Our phone calls to that department were not returned. When you see Something Like this happen, it really breaks your heart. It really makes you feel for what that poor animal went through. Reporter the firefighter will now be charged with animal cruelty. In napa, leanne melendez, abc 7 news. The Health Advisory for rock crab will be lifted tomorrow for parts of california. This map shows the areas in the clear, along the coast of Santa Barbara and san lewis obispo counties. The advisory remains in effect in other areas of the state. State Health Officials say you should not eat rock crab from those areas, including here in the bay area. Abc 7 news was in Solano County as a grandmother faced a judge. Shes charged with the death of her grandson. Next, a live update on the court case against her and what may have played a role in the 4yearolds death. Laura anthony joins us live. She was unemotional. Reporter thats right. Really stoic throughout this very brief hearing. After the hearing, we did talk with a prosecutor. He revealed that this grandmother did have a dui conviction many years ago, but no significant criminal history. And he hinted at a possible defense. A Solano CountyProsecutor SaysMental Health may have played a role in a fairfield grandmothers killing of her young grandson. 51yearold dawn Raines Hughes showed no emotion as she walked into a fairfield courtroom surrounded by two public defenders. Raines hughes did not enter a plea to two felony counts in the death of her 4yearold grandson richard kite, at her home tuesday morning. One count is murder. And the second count is child abuse causing death. If found guilty on either count, Raines Hughes faces 25 years to life in prison. The boy was visiting his grandmother tuesday with his two sisters. When he was found unresponsive in a bathtub. She admitted to the intentional act of drowning the child. Reporter police say Raines Hughes admitted drowning the boy. Today theres a small memorial at the duplex where he was killed. The crime is absolutely horrific. I was here a week ago on an arraignment for a care provider who killed a 17monthold child in her care. And here a week later, im here again for an arraignment on this time a grandparent, whos killed a 4yearold child. Reporter Raines Hughes is expected back in court next thursday. In fairfield urk lawy, laura anc 7 news. New pictures and video show two suspects robbing an alamo gas station and beating a clerk. Here you see the victim talking to one of the suspects. The man on the left side of your screen in the white long sleeve jacket is who sheriffs deputies are look for. Heres a closer look. Deputies say the robbers walked into the store early sunday morning. One or both of them beat the cashier and stole items from the store before taking off in an older white suv. The cashier was treated at the hospital. San Leandro Police say a serial robber is dangerous and on the move. They say he struck twice today in a crime spree that began christmas week. Theyre asking Law Enforcement agencies around the bay area to be on the lookout, and theyre asking the public to help identify the man. Abc 7 News ReporterCarolyn Tyler has the details. Reporter this is the latest in a series of at least eight armed holdups. It happened at 7 35 this morning in san leandro. Surveillance video shows the man entering this valero gas station on east 14th, wearing a mask and pointing what appears to be a high caliber semiautomatic pistol. At one point, he actually went behind the counter holding the employee at gunpoint, forced her down on to the floor, and he crouched down as well as another customer came in and put money on the counter to pay for the gas, the robbery was still in progress. Reporter about 20 minutes later, police say the same man hit this dry cleaners on davis street. Just a bit west of one of the four 7eleven stores he robbed over four days last week. At this one, an employee pushed a panic button, but the robber always in a black hoodie got away before police arrived. On christmas eve, he pulled up a heist at the 7eleven on foothill boulevard. The clerk says the armed robber cleaned out the register. I think its pretty crazy. I think people need to just realize there aint enough money here to rob anybody. Reporter perhaps thats why apparently for the first time he switched to rwalnut creek. Investigators are knocking on doors and searching for witnesses who can help identify the stocky 59 asian or latino criminal. They believe hes becoming increasingly dangerous.
