santa clara teenager who stabbed four people at uc merced was planning to do something worse. >> the 18-year-old was from santa clara. the photo on the right was taken recently. the sheriff revealed a hand written manifesto was found during the autopsy. he listed names of students he wanted to zip tie to death after being kicked out of a study group. the sheriff says he laid out the plan carefully, but things didn't go according to plan. >> his plan went haywire because people fought back. that is his badluck. the fortunate part is that we have a brave construction worker that stopped this from going on. >> what may have motivated him? we live with melanie woodrow. >> reporter: the sheriff confirmed that that manifesto suggested this may have come down of him being kicked out of a study group at uc merced, students described him as a very intelligent student, having few friends, being very quiet, and they're shocked by the news. counselors were on hand, though officials said current students did not know him. >> my friend said he was quiet but really smart. >> shocking because officials say the student stabbed two other students, a staff member and construction worker on uc merced campus wednesday. >> this person had greater intention to do harm. >> reporter: police shot and killed mohammed. the incident began in a classroom. he was a freshman computer science and engineering student. a bomb squad neutralized his backpack. >> in the backpack were two zip tie bags and a night vision scope. >> reporter: the sheriff says there was hammer and duct tape. >> there is nothing to indicate he was doing anything other than being a college student. >> reporter: his roommate said he was often alone. >> i'd try to say something, he'd just ignore it. >> reporter: family members of students were shocked you. >> you never know. this is too close for comfort. >> reporter: a young woman is telling her story tonight. megan kristofferson witnessed the dramatic end to the toeror that gripped the campus. >> the student was walking across campus and saw students running towards her. >> i thought it's just inactivity. and then, i realized they were chasing a person in front. and so he got closer. i noticed he had something in black. >> it was a hunting knife. she says the students backed off when two police officers took over. she says the suspect then stopped and one officer told the man to drop his weapon, but he didn't corps -- comply. >> he kept advancing towards him. the officer started saying do you want to get shot? you need to put it down. and then, he made a lunge at the officer. the quick motion towards him. >> reporter: megan was just 30 feet away and thinking she was in the light of fire. >> it was extreme panic and i just ran for my life. >> reporter: she says she heard two gunshots and saw officers standing over the body. she says she was traumatized by is planning to go back to school. >> i feel like this is just an isolated, unfortunate incident. and -- yes. so i mean it does make you feel a little less safe knowing this can happen on your campus. >> a former emf chief that was first to respond to the columbine massacre. >> it's terrible. the loss of life, the trauma people endure and people that aren't responders are victims. there are communities traumatized. >> reporter: he is teaching first responders how to prepare for attacks like the one at uc merced and says being prepared is critical since the violence can break out at any time. a bay area college spent the day training students on how to mentally and physically deal a active shooter. a mother running through the scene of an accident crashed her car. she is in the hospital and sadly, her child is dead. >> reporter: tragedy is really the only way to describe it. we're told the investigation is concluding. the saturn had been towed away after a minor hit and run involving a young mother in the hospital, ending with the death of her young son. >> that is a baby. the boy had not even lived life yet. >> reporter: neighbors are stunned over this terrible car crash that left a 2-year-old boy dead. police say the 30-year-old mother was involved in a minor collision, after hitting candice williams car, and took off. >> she came out of the houses and hit my car. i tried to walk up on her car, she sped off. and almost hit me. >> reporter: police say the driver left the scene, but made a u-turn and lost control of the car and struck a light pole. the baby son was ejected from the back seat and died. >> it was very sad. a life lost, a careless mom, driving reckless. i don't know what she was thinking not having a baby in the car seat. or not. >> reporter: police don't know if the child was secured in a car seat or if his mom was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. the child's mother remains in the hospital. authorities say she did not have a driver's license. a woman accused of hitting two middle school boys in a crosswalk in the marina district is now charged with four felonies. police say she had a blood alcohol level of nearly twice the legal limit. neighbors say speeding cars make crossing the streets dangerous in that area. a murder victim's family renewing the call to catch killer of a young single mother. she died after being shot two years ago. two other people were wounded near childrens hospital. henderson's mother hopes her sorrow will spur witnesses to contact police. >> nothing will take the image away from us. how she was taken away from me, and my family. it's devastating. >> we have received some information but nothing that can lead us to identification of a suspect. >> the fbi is working with oakland police to help find the killer and solve other cold cases. governor's brown's office is responding to allegations he used state workers as a private oil prospecting team. the associated press reports that he ordered teams to research and report back on oil drilling potential on his family's land. his office said brown was interested in the ranch's geology not drilling for oil and gas. his spokesman say the work did not violate any law. bay area fishermen are waiting for the other shoe to drop after the california fish and game district delayed crab season by 180 days. tests on crab show a high level of acid that is toxic to humans being caused by an algae bloom. professional crab fishermen expect their season delayed as well. >> they don't want sport guys harvesting crab and eating them and they don't want us to harm the public by harvesting to the public. >> crab sellers at san francisco fisherman's wharf say they'll bring in crab from washington state from now. the decision will be made in a few days and testing will continue. a san francisco bicyclist helped a 10-year-old boy got his phone back that was stolen. the bicyclist saw it happen and was able to go after the thief and recover the phone. the child was not seriously hurt, but startled. take a look at this outrageous robbery in santa clara. a man slams through a window and police say he stuffed $10,000 worth of sunglasses into a blue walmart bag and took off. you can only see part of his face. walking out of class to take a stand on violence and racism. a break in the case involving a hate-laced computer message that led to a student protest in berkeley. plus... what next in alameda after this chaos at city hall last night? how far will you go? how much will you see? electrify the world. now with a class-leading 107 miles on a charge, the nissan leaf is the best selling electric car in america. good evening once again. we'll start with the latest developments n on the suspect in yesterday's uc merced stabbings. the sheriff of merced county says the suspect wrote a two-page manifesto. he named a list of students he wanted to tie to desks and harm. and he wanted to create more tragedies, as he put it, around campus. before yesterday's incident, south bay schools and colleges have been teaching students how to defend themselves and they held one of those exercises today. david louie explains what students learned in foot hill college. >> reporter: we've learned a sad lesson that college campuses are not save havens they once were and students need to know what to do. >> everybody walks around in a bubble. it can't happen to me. we're popping that bubble today. >> reporter: the class is called run, hide, and defend, challenging students to consider surroundings and be prepared to defend themselves if they can't run or hide. >> it's 2015. and i'm in a room full of people. i'm telling you you have to bonk someone with something. that is terrible but it's important for you to survive and to be safe. >> reporter: prior to the class, lisa wasn't sure she'd take on an asilent. >> i can take a fire extinguisher use that as a weapon, and telling police officers you need to do this gives you more of an okay, i will do this. >> visual clues are important if a person is using a knife instead of shooting a gun. >> if you hear shots, go in another direction. if you watch running because there is an incident, that is an idea of where to run. >> reporter: the class was developed by the police chief and county office of education. >> with all of the news going on with the shootings everywhere, now, i'm more aware. reports report at foot hill college, david louie, abc # news. police say a veteran police officer who staged a suicide put a hit out on a high ranking village administrator. he feared he would be caught. investigators say he set up a meeting with a high ranking gang member to put a hit on administrators he feared would expose him. investigators are talking to his wife and four sons to figure out what they knew. moving to the campaign trail. the secret service is confirming two republican front runners will receive protection. donald trump and ben carson will get details within days. it is a status symbol in a presidential race. this as nbc pulled an ad for snl hosted by trump this weekend, calling carson a total loser. snl follows the equal assess rules so other republican candidates are entitled to ask for time. hillary clinton will be back in the bay area. the democratic presidential hopeful attended an event in los altos yesterday. in between, she flew to los angeles for more fund-raisers and made a special appearance on jimmy kimmel live. a san francisco restaurant owner is explaining herself after taking comments about toddlers on facebook. she says it was a misunderstanding but some question whether they'll continue to dine at her restaurant. she spoke with chris nguyen today. >> reporter: after leaving work for the day, she stopped by a japanese restaurant. >> i don't want to be screamed at or children bouncing on me or hitting on me. it's frustrating. >> reporter: she shared her experience but it ended up on a cole valley neighborhood facebook page. in it, she wrote, this may shock you but choosing to have children means you can't go out to eat for roughly th years. please accept your fate. you're killing me. the comment, meant as a joke was seen by hundreds of people. some didn't find it funny. >> we all live in the city. we have to figure out a way to live together. i don't want to feel thate should have to hole up in our houses. >> reporter: others saying she is entitled to her opinion as an individual and people need to simmer down. >> what she said was something we've all done. you throw a comment out there. who hasn't been annoyed by a toddler in a restaurant at one point in her life?
