>> reporter: dan, this area is still blocked off to traffic as crews need to make sure everyone is accounted for, while investigators try to determine the cause of the fire. firefighters planned to be here overnight, describing the work as slow and methodical. the building, just too unstable. >> it pretty much pan caked from the fourth, to the third to the second. that's making the search efforts slow and difficult. >> reporter: the fire broke out at 6:15 a.m. rea residents running for their lives, some hanging out of windows. >> i heard people screaming, back banging on the walls and windows, telling people, get out, get out, get out. i grabbed my kids, grabbed our shoes and we ran outside. when i opened the door, it was like back draft. >> reporter: three people have been confirmed dead. the coroner identified one of them at 64-year-old edward anderson. those who made it out alive checked in at the temporary shelter at the ew oakland u center on market street. >> i just don't know what to do. i lost everything. i don't have nothing. but the bags, the free clothes. i have no underwear. i don't have nothing. >> it's unclear how long the shelter will remain open. the goal is to find a long-term housing solution for the fire victims. >> maybe the health needs, the drug needs, that's going to be the challenge, being able to find the places that will take the individuals in. >> reporter: leaving dozens of people with an uncertain future. in oakland, lilian kim, abc7 news. the building that burned down housed a non-profit housing group, whose client lived on the site. we've learned the landlord tried to evict them after december's deadly ghost ship fire, but the tenants got a restraining order. urojas ministries serves the homeless and mentally ill. they complained about the dangerous and unsanitary conditions in the building, holes in walls, mold, milldew, leaking pipes, and rodents. >> we talked to the powers that be to let them know we've been having issues in this building. tat's what we've been doing, trying to get assistance with it since december. >> reporter: city records detailed 20 complaints dating back seven years. the owner told said the non-profit was behind on rent. you can download our app today so you know what's happening where you live. several riders opted for uber and lift to get to work and boy did they pay through the nose. before 8:30 a.m., the accident caused a powerful line to fall near the west oakland -- closing the station, uber and lift engaged in surge pricing. according to posts on social media, a ride from oakland to downtown san francisco costs between $60 and $110. ouch. the old bay bridge continues to be demolished. tomorrow crews will remove the final steel truss section of the bridge. the two million pound section will be loaded on to barges for disassembly. up next is the demolition of the bridge's remaining marine foundations, expected to be completed by 2018. inmates go on the attack inside a bay area jail with a make shift knife. tonight we're learning about the criminal history of one of the accused attackers. plus the colorful cab company for sale and the bargain price that may surprise you. and horsepower on a bay area freeway. the runaway animals stampeding through the morning commute. and despite the sunshine today, temperatures below normal. and i'll have the numbers ahead. >> a lot to get to, but first a look at what's coming up on jim "jimmy kimmel live!" >> here's what's up tonight. i brought a clip, like a preview. >> oh, really? the suspects. katie? >> reporter: it happened here in a wing that houses inmates accused of murder and attempted murder. tonight a source tells me one of the alleged attackers is charged in the double murder of two teenagers and that his mother was on the blue ribbon commission for jails. the santa clara county sheriff's office says these are what two inmates attacked another. >> he was stabbed in the head, in the back, in his sides with a manufactured weapon of a metal material. >> reporter: the stabbing was so brutal, the blades were went in the attack. one of the suspects is matthew clifford, who is awaiting trial for murder in the shooting deaths of two teenagers behind the kohl's store on jackson avenue. the other is being h attempted murder charge. >> this was a calculated attack. >> reporter: they say the suspects and the victim were among 40 high-level offenders who were out of their cells for free time. >> in this case, officers were able to respond in a timely manner and catch the individuals with the weapons on their person. >> reporter: this judge says the stabbing shows the importance of the committee's recommendations. >> the recommendation that there be independent civilian oversight in the jails, that there be new leadership in the jails. because it's just getting a bit old, seeing these kinds of things happening again and again. >> reporter: the
