There is growing evidence that the fleece jacket that keeps you warm may also be polluting San Francisco bay and the ocean. Tiny plastic typers believed to come from man made fabrics are turning up in water and fish, and every load of laundry you do may be adding to the problem. In america we love our hightech fabrics. They keep us warm or cool or just looking cool. More than half the clothing we buy is synthetic. Great to wear, but not to eat. Yet thats what some scientists believe is happening. One in four fish we sampled sold for human consumption has microplastic in it. Uc davis professor Susan Williams is part of a team that examined a range of fish caught off half moon bay. We hoped we wouldnt find plastic in the fish guts, but we did. 80 of what they found was in the form of tiny fibers believed to come from synthetic fabric. Scientists say it is likely getting into the water through our washing machines. A recent study showed washing a single synthetic garment can generate more than 1900 microfibers. The fibers get washed into the sewage system. Here is a fiber. Rebecca sutton with the Estuary Institute shows us how small the fibers can be and some only visible with a microscope. Some say the Sewage Treatment plants are not able to filter the fibers out. Jim ervin is with the waste Water Treatment plant, the largest and most advanced in the bay area. I thought if anybody can clean out particles, we must do it. These fibers are so tiny they are either getting through or floating over. The waste water goes through this channel and out San Francisco bay. There is no cheap, easy way to get rid of millions and millions of microparticles. Thats why california is banning plastic microbeads used in facial scrub and toothpaste starting in 2020. Eliminating plastic fibers may be harder. Synthetic fibers are useful. It would be hard to give them up. And yet they are generating a pollution problem. Past studies show fish who are fed plastic in labs do accumulate toxins in their bodies. But there are still questions about whether the same things happens to fish who eat plastic in the the wild and then end up on your dinner plate. What we dont know is whether the toxins have got into the plastic and in high enough concentrations to affect human health. The american fiber the American Fiber Manufacturers Association says there are chains and processes and not enough sciencebased facts that clearly indicates what is happening. Professor williams agrees that maury search is that more research is needed and she is still eating seafood. Eventually we may need to test the fish for plastic, the same way we test for mercury and lead. Im live in the newsroom with an update on the breaking news out of paris.
