to north korea, but removed by officials as his flight home was about to take off. that was october 26th. newman's family has had no contact with him since then. developing news, a standoff in a southern california phone store is over. the gunman who barricaded himself inside was killed. the standoff began at 4:00 this afternoon after police say an armed ran robbed a rite-aid and then locked himself in a verizon store. after more than five hours a s.w.a.t team went in and they found him dead. nobody else was hurt. thousands of shoppers in the bay area hit the stores this black friday. among the deal seekers, demonstrators are out in force protesting the big box retailer. alan wang is live where police arrested some of the protesters. alan? >> carolyn, everything is back to normal tonight, but around 4:30 the demonstrators were in the middle of the street ignoring police. it was part of a coordinated effort against wal-mart, about about -- but the only one happening in the bay area happened right here. about 150 people demmon straighted in the southbound -- demonstrated in the southbound lanes in front of the san leandro wal-mart. many in green t-shirts are part of an organized group of former and current wal-mart employees complaining about low wages and retaliation formp. >> we as workers have a legal right to speak out to our employers. >> there is no intimidation and no retaliation at wal-mart. in fact, we have processes for associates to speak with management. >> i make $8.65 and it is hard to pay represent -- to pay rent. when you pay your bills have you nothing left. >> in california the average hourly rate is over $13. there are 401k benefits and health starts as low as $a 18 a pay period. we know we offer good jobs. >> police arrested five demonstrators for civil disobedience. but their sacrifices continue stop with their own sympathizers from shopping at wal-mart. he had to buy trash bags and paper towels. >> are they going to stop you roseville near sacramento. about a hundred protesters were outside the store for two hours today. 15 broke off and marched to the busy intersection and then sat down. they were arrested for failing to disperse. despite a few problems most black friday events were pretty calm. most shoppers told us it was not as crowded as they expected. so many people now shop on-line or through mobile. 24r walls an increase in -- there was an increase in sales and amazon saw a 25% increase. for some customers, the deals this year did thought coerce them to buy. >> i thought it would be better. you see to wait they swarmed a pallet loaded with pallets as soon as it was rolled out. >> they were trying t let shoppers in one by one. bad idea. hundreds jumped the security railings. the security guards could only stand and watch. another chaotic scene in west palm beach, florida. crowds got rowdy over a few deals offered to a limited number of customers. we have breaking news on the dunbar ton bridge right now. the westbound lanes of the bridge are closed because of a fatal accident. the highway patrol says a pedestrian walking on the bridge was hit by a car. this happened around 10 ooflt 40 and no word -- 10:40 and no word when the westbound side will re-open. a police officer made his 100th drunk driving arrest of 2013 this week. >> i certainly believe it does save lives. that's one of the main reasons i do the job. >> officer kevin mcdougal has received awards from mothers against drunk driving in each of the last six years. he could receive another one this year. early thursday morning he made his 100th dui after pulling over a driver who had run a red light. the commanding officer says the extra efforts are making a difference. >> it has made the community a lot safer and discouraged people from getting on the street intoxicated and that just goes to his level of dedication. >> it is just something i like to do and i have done for a longtime. i think i am pretty good at it. >> officer mcdougal says he looks for obvious violations such as speeding or running a red light or stop signs. he says half of the people he arrests for dui thought they were okay to drive at the time. a man was shot to death inside a vallejo apartment. it happened at the marina heights apartment complex. homicide is releasing few details of what lead up to this killing. the victim's identity has not been released. police are looking for a man who robbed a bank of america branch. we have photos to show you. the man went into the bank around 5:00 p.m. he passed a note to the teller demanding money. he is described as a white man, 6 feet tall and a thin build and light brown goatee. developing news in the bart negotiations. the unions that went on sale twice are set to sue bart over a family medical leave clause which bart claims was a mistake in the contract. the clause would give workers up to six weeks of paid family leave per year. bart removed the clause earlier this month before proving the contract. the removal is an assault on the collective bargaining process. a major rescue operation continues in glasco, scotland. there were more than 100 people attending the
