when temperatures could close in on 90 degrees in san francisco in october. spencer christian has more, this is a bit strange? >> it is, not unusual for us to get warm weather in october but this is going to be hot weather, clear skies across the bay area, not a hint of low coastal clouds. here is a look at the temperatures, 93 today, the average high for this date in san francisco is only 72. 87 across the bay in oakland, numerous locations in the inland areas in the upper 80s and low 90s today. we have a heat advisory in effect for the entire bay area including our beaches, from noon tomorrow to 9:00 tomorrow night. we'll see widespread temperatures to near 100 in some inland locations. of course, the risk of heat-related illness increases with this, and a greater fire risk as hills they're actually taking action, a team of volunteers were out today beating back the dry brush just below the area that burned in the oakland hills fire storm back in 1991. the oakland fire department also plans to put patrols out in the hills just to be safe. and the san francisco giants celebrating after dominating the pirates in a winner take all wild card game. abc sports director larry beal has more. >> such a contrast with the feel and tone of last night to tonight, last night, you know, we saw with the a's how things can really get out of hand, the giants took the crowd out of this game and beat the pirates. the big blow came in the fourth inning, bases loaded for brandon crawford. a grand slam off edison volquez, giving the game a lead. bumgarner in complete command, a patient is, he is thomas eric duncan. his case is updated to critical. several people came in contact with him after he was diagnosed. five were children, three first responders who rushed to the hospital tested negative for the virus. duncan left liberia already infected with the disease but not showing symptoms and therefore not contagious. everyone who flies out of liberia is screened but as we know that is not always enough. >> the man in texas shows us even though we're doing the right things infected people can still slip through. >> the bay area hospitals hope they are not going to face that, but just in case they are gearing up for the first patient to walk through their doors. >> for now, hospital staff can usually identify the potential for a patient with ebola because of its origin in west africa, making travel history a priority. from that point, regional medical center of san jose says the screening procedures are similar to how the protocol is handled. >> there are longstanding procedures, however, we do fine tune them given whatever the outbreak is. that could be sars from years ago, or h1n1. >> the doctor is the hospital's director of infectious diseases. >> the patient is immediately placed in strict isolation. and what that means is a private room, droplet isolation, and contact isolation. >> we would not enter those rooms without complete protection from the droplets. and then in the hospital we also have several beds that are fully contained isolation units and we would be able to protect other staff and visitors from those patients. >> regional is keeping in contact with the cdc and with the county public health organization to speed procedures. fever is usually a first symptom, during passout breaks, some airports use sensors to identify arriving passengers with fever. the number of passengers passing through the bay area is staggering, more than 4 million at sfo, 50,000 in san jose, in san jose, david louie and the cdc says there was family insisted she was still alive and had her moved to a private facility. now, if the court approves the request, the hospital or the taxpayers could be on the hook for jahaigh's medical costs. and today, others came forward to the mayor to say they lost confidence. >> when the 24 year veteran of the san francisco fire department, a battalion chief, said it had to be done. >> i have never seen morale this low. >> and it is low because? >> i feel that it is a leadership issue. >> by top, battalion chief means joanne hayes white who faces increasing criticism from all branches of her department, first came the letter from rank and file to mayor ed lee, today, another letter from her trusted managers, 44 chiefs. >> we all felt it was important to have a consensus. and i have spoken to all the chief officers and we have a vast majority that are supporting the letter. and looking for a change in the administration to be able to solve our problems. >> the most publicized ambulance response times, today union president tom o'connor showed abc 7 where there were delays of up to a half an hour, where ten minutes is the standard. >> tme this is the index of pain and suffering for people in san francisco, they're waiting too long for help. >> under hayes-white, they are criticized for the handling of the disaster. they are sleeping in a fire training classroom because their fire house is closed due to black mold. critics say hayes-white manages well in front of the public but misses details for the fire house. >> we want a chief to pay attention to all the small things. >> when asked about the letter, mayor ed lee played it safe. >> we're actually assessing what everybody's opinions are and making sure we have facts and not just opinions. >> that, from a mayor with a police got the wrong guy when they arrested an east bay musician for arson. tonight, family and friends of one of the men accused of starting a string of fires claims he has an airtight alibi. gutierrez and peterson are facing arson charges, peterson family says there is no way he is involved. abc news reporter nick smith has more. >> reporter: hannah flores is convinced 27-year-old steven michael peterson, one of two men accused of setting a string of fires early sunday morning in alameda is innocent. >> i want people to know that steven did not set the fires. he was at work at the time. they just kind of picked him up in front of his house. they haven't checked his alibi, i am worried. >> the arson fire destroyed houses and businesses, today, peterson made his second court appearance. family and friends who came to support the musician are themselves singing the same refrain. cops have the wrong guy. >> even if you said we're all in a state of denial, the facts are the facts. >> impossible, i was with him from 7 to 1:45 sunday morning working at roosters. >> he was working here at a sound tech, during the time police accused him of being across town starting fires. >> today we briefed. and i can assure you we're following up every single lead. >> the lieutenant says she knows more than she can share without compromising the investigation. and her detectives do not take sides. they're purely objective fact finders. peterson is held on $750,000 bail. friends are using social media to voice their support under the hash tag "free steven peterson". >> solidarity, we all need to stick together, they have to wrong guy and we don't want to see it go further. >> peterson's next court date is the 4th. and pink is the color of the month as many organizations bring awareness to breast cancer. tonight we're focusing on the breast cancer emergency fund and what it does for low income women who are diagnosed. here is abc 7 news reporter. >> reporter: it is the first day working with the breast cancer emergency fund. she probably knows more about the organization than most people. that is because before she took the job she was a cancer patient herself. >> i at least have peace of mind. i know i will always get the support so i can do something else i want. >> reporter: the breast cancer emergency fund helps women diagnosed with breast cancer pay their rent, utilities and other living expenses while they are undergoing treatment. >> nearly all of them are in hourly jobs. they usually don't have insurance from their employer or medical leave. >> reporter: the organization was created within the aids emergency fund. >> it was an opportunity 14 years ago for the men involved in hiv work to give back to the women who had been caregivers in the very earliest days of hiv. >> reporter: anita will now help asian women diagnosed with breast cancer navigate for the system. >> i found out with the immigrants they don't know where to get help. they are looking at resources. >> reporter: the organization has many supporters, including the ritz carlton which has created a dream for girls. with every cocktail sold, the emergency will get a dollar. the organization will donate ten for each tea seating. it is part of their commitment around the world. >> under-privileged children, povert environmental conservation in low-to-mid 90s. 92 at concord and fairfield. livermore, 94, pleasanton, here is the accu weather seven-day forecast. three hot days coming our way in the inland areas, highs in the next few days in safety. in a post, the chief product officer says we owe you a better experience using facebook and we're going to fix the way this policy gets handled. a protest was planned over this issue tomorrow. from the fallout of the intruder at the white house, omar gonzales sprinting across the white house lawn, through the front door, outwitting the secret service. tonight, the head of the secret service is out. the suspect is in court. >> in the end, secret service director julie pierson could not protect her own job. >> over the last several days we've seen recent and accumulating reports, raising questions about the performance of the agency. and the president concluded that new leadership of the agency was required. >> peterson could not survive the devastating security breach when an intruder with a knife jumped the fence, ran across the north lawn, burst into the door and made it all the way through the east room before being tackled. the president and his daughters had left the building only four months earlier. the intruder, omar gonzales, was in court today and pled not guilty. >> i believe that you have done a disservice to the president of the united states. >> reporter: just hours after being grilled on capitol hill yesterday about that fiasco, another secret service problem was revealed. as mr. obama arrived at the cdc two weeks ago he and the secret service entered the elevator with a plain clothes security guard. a guard, sources say, began to act star struck, taking pictures. caught off guard, the secret service questioned the man and were shocked to discover he was carrying a gun. and a background check revealed he had a criminal record. the president was never told about the breach. >> the white house first learned of that incident yesterday afternoon shortly before it was reported -- publicly reported by news organizations. >> that, apparently, was the last straw. after 30 years of government service, pierson was out. by late last night, the law enforcement sources were speculating whether pierson could survive. this can be a tough town. pierre thomas, abc news washington. and a global effort to show solidarity with protesters in hong kong, 35 protests like this scheduled to denounce what organizers say is violent oppression by the hong kong police. this group here carried umbrellas, protesters in hong kong have been using umbrellas for protection against pepper spray by police and it has become kind of a symbol of the movement. this group says it is closely watching what is happening over there. >> it has been quiet in the last day or two. but nobody thinks that it is peaceful, that it will last forever. they will stay there as long as they can. >> tens of thousands have rallied in hong kong since last week demanding democratic changes to the electoral system. let's show you a live picture from hong kong where it is just after noon on thursday. the demonstrators holding their positions and remain unchallenged by hong kong authorities. they now threaten to occupy key government buildings unless a top official resigns. san francisco launched a new ad campaign today in the city's ongoing efforts to stop domestic violence. it is the domestic violence awareness month, they gathered groups at city hall to try to bring attention to this incident. they implemented more than 120 reforms to reduce domestic violence. today, the district attorney announced the muni ad campaign, love should not hurt. >> we want to raise the level of awareness. our goal is to see the day when domestic violence will be completely eliminated in our community. >> tonight, community members will gather to light up in purple to mark the domestic violence month. and you wouldn't believe what a mother in wyoming did to stop her daughter from ditching class. jean crutchfield is a mother of three, her daughter, a high school freshman. she skipped class, her mother was not happy about it so she marched into school with her camera school. >> we're going to hold hands and go to class and sit together. isn't that great? mommy and daughter? yaah, we're going to class together. >> she drove home the point with a video on facebook. viewed nearly 30,000 times and there are more than 800 likes. but it has sparked controversy with some questioning whether she went too far. >> it was kind of just spur of the moment, it was you know, i debated on whether i was going to do it or not. i was like i'm just going to do it. >> and she did. and the response has been quite dramatic. what do you think? >> well, here is another reason to hit the gym. it can improve memory. a new georgia institute of technology said an intense workout lasting as little as 20 minutes can enhance long-term memory. georgia tech provided this video. it is not the first study to prove that exercise can improve memory. the study showed that people lifting weights just once in a 48-hour period had a 10% improvement. so pumping iron helps out in a number of cinder two months ago when she arrived for medical treatment. tonight, we'll take you and show you how she is doing. >> reporter: this was the biggest wildfire in washington state history. and this was one of its victims. a-year-old bear cub with paws so badly burned she was dragging herself on her elbows, four thing. one man gave her water. >> she has burns to her face and to her arms and to her chest. >> reporter: the wildlife team needed help and they found it at lake tahoe wildlife care. a few years ago, the rescue center took in a cub called lil smoky who also had his paws burned in a forest fire. the rehab was slow. >> we were successful and smoky was released back into the wild. >> reporter: so in august, a volunteer flew the cub now named cinder to tahoe. she arrived seriously underweight and barely able to walk. now, two months later, cinder has made a lot of progress. but she is not too happy at the moment. she is about to get her bandages changed, and doesn't like it. these two volunteered for it. dr. willis is using the broom to get cinder to turn around so he can jab her in the back side with an immobilization drug. he has done it every two days since she got here, and he is good. every two days, it's done. she was light, washington only 39 pounds, now she almost double that. once cinder is on the exam table, the loving care is obvious. the director is very proud of her patient's dramatic improvement. >> see, that is nice. >> reporter: even though cinder's eyes are open, she is sedated so cheryl and the doctor can work without worry, her burns are completely healed now but her feet have a way to go. the trick is to try to get the bandages on firmly enough so cinder can't feel the pain. >> we don't want her to feel the pain. >> this is serious business, but on the other side of the center, there is a party going on, there are ten more injured animals, with the wildfire season. the cubs are seven or eight months old and all are doing well. human contact is kept to a minimum, so they will stay away from people when released. probably during winter or maybe early spring. as forcinder, once she is recovered, she will go back to the wild. remember how feisty she is? she will make it. >> there is no doubt in my mind, she is nasty enough. >> for now, though, cinder is going to have a feast of red grapes. >> she loves the red grapes. >> and she is kind of feisty and ornery, the money to feed the bears comes from donations. right now they're eating $1200 worth of food a week, if you would like to help or watch the bears on camera, go let's look at the october almanac for san francisco. the average high temperature on october first, which is today's date. in san francisco, we beat it by ten degrees, san francisco, 82. the average high at the end of the month, 68 degrees, the highest temperature ever recorded in october in san francisco 102 degrees back in 1987. let's hope we don't see that this year. highs tomorrow, statewide, 90 in chico. five in los angeles, 96 in palm springs of course it will be hot in the state. the heat advisory in effect from noon tomorrow to 9:00 p.m. friday.ñi highs from mid-to-upper 80s in the
