An anchor dan ashley in washington with more on this busy first day. Reporter a lot is happening in the city on President Trumps first day. Lets begin by me catching you up on some of the latest headlines in washington. In the past couple of hours we got our first look at donald trump inside the oval office. He sign his First Executive order as president , an order for federal agencies to ease the burden of president obamas sweeping healthcare law. We are working to get more information and details on what the order actually means. It comes after congress voted for a full repeal ofhe Affordable Care act. Stay tuned for more on that. President trumps first two cabinet nominees were sworn in late this afternoon. You are looking at ve president mike pence giving the oath to retired general james mattis, who is now defense secretary. Retired general john kelly took the oath at Homeland Security secretary. The Senate Confirmed both nominations earlier in this day. It has been a day of celebration, but as you have seen here in washington and around the country also a day of protest. A lot of people came from the bay area to be a part of this inauguration, and we had the chance to spend some time with them today. What did you think of the president s speech . I thought it was good. He is talking to all of america now, and will be the leader for all of america. Reporter was it moving to you in some ways . Very much so. Reporter tell me why. It is a very patriotic thing to listen to the president , to see the inauguration, to see the swearing in, and the people, the people were great. It was amazing. The kroutd was amazing. Reporter why are you here 3,000 miles from home today . Im here to honor our new president. Reporter what did you think of the inauguration and speech . I thought it was fantastic. The spirit is wonderful. Were going to make America Great again. Reporter everyone here very relieved that the rain held off for the inauguration. I have been talking with people who came from all parts of the country including a lot of people from the bay area, some diehard Trump Supporters, some not so much. But everyone i spoke with very glad that they came. Reporter what was your impression being more of a democrat, being here and here on a republican inauguration . I think ultimately he is our president , right . Thats the whole purpose of democracy, is you vote in an election. No one ever said youre going to get your choice, but the majority decides. And we have him for four years and we have to abide by that decision. Reporter a lot of people in our area dont support donald trump as president. What would you say to them on this inauguration . I would say give him a chance. He is a very smart person, okay. He didnt get to where he is by being dumb. I think a lot of people fear some of the rhetoric that he says, but a lot of it is taken out of context. Think hes going to, you know, bring a lot of common sense values to the white house and hes going to do a good job. Reporter really interesting conversations with bay area folks who felt they had to be here in person to witness this historic day in washington. You know, this was a day of great change, obviously. Not just for the country but also for two men, donald trump and barack obama. Now, private citizens, barack and Michelle Obamas plane landed a little while ago in Southern California at riversides march air reserve base. They were supposed to land at palm springs airport where they were going to go on vacation but they could not because of a storm moving through. This landing in riverside was a bit of a challenge too because the base lost power in the storm. The obamas plan to spend a week on vacation in california, then theyre going to move back to washington d. C. , living in the coveted kalorama neighborhood. Unusual for a former president to stay in the Washington Area right after leaving office, but theyre doing that in order to allow their older daughter malia to finish high school. What a day it has been. Pomp, circumstance and a good bit of chaos on the streets of washington and around the country, but we have witnessed history tonight. While President Trumps inaugural address is described by some as unusually combative, he struck a more conciliatory note at the luncheon, thanking bill and Hillary Clinton had for attending. I was very honored, very, very honored when i heard that president bill clinton and secretary Hilary Clinton was coming today. I think it is appropriate to say and i would like you to stand up. [ applause ] honestly, theres nothing more i can say because i have a lot of respect for those two people. Earlier today, mrs. Clinton tweeted she attended todays inauguration to honor our democracy and its enduring values, saying she will never stop believing in our Current Railway and its future. More than 200 people were arrested during inauguration protests in d. C. Today. One limousine was vandalized, then set on fire. The windows of other cars were smashed. At one point a few protesters used sticks to vandalize a starbucks and a bank. A pile of overturned newspaper boxes and trash cans were also set on fire. Police responded with flash bang grenades and pepper spray and attempted to chase down some of the vandals. Washington d. C. Police say six officers suffered minor injuries. Protesters still on the streets in okay land tonight. About 1,000 people protesting the inauguration of donald trump marched through the downtown area. Police were out but the protests remain peaceful. We heard a multitude of concerns from protesters today. I also am a science teacher, so to put somebody in charge of the epa who is opposed to the epa, opposed regulation, i am really afraid. Mass movements will be necessary to stop trumps attacks. Mass mobilizations of working people to in the streets to protest, to get organized in the workplaces, you know, potentially have strike actions, walkouts, school walkouts, things like that. Oakland police say their Staffing Levels are full tonight. So far though the demonstrations have been peaceful. A large crowd marched through San Francisco tonight as well. This President Trump protest went down Market Street to the castro. There were at least 1,000 protesters. Like in oakland there was a large police presence. The crowd has been loud but peaceful. A peaceful antitrump demonstration brought thousands to San Franciscos Golden Gate Bridge. Participants formed a human chain. Organizers said it was to show unity is the strongest fwrij of all. Reporter as President Donald Trump was sworn into office, thousands in San Francisco gathered on the Golden Gate Bridge and linked arms. This was not called a protest, but instead a show of unity. All of the reasons why youre unhappy or all of the reasons why you dont like the results, it wasnt about that. It was about goodness, goodness coming together. Were trying to show that love trumps hate and were stronger together, and you dont get anything by violence. What is expected to be the largest inauguration protest takes place tomorrow. Thousands will be in the Nations Capital for the womens march on washington. Similar marches will take place in San Francisco, oakland and more than 600 cities worldwide. The white house has a new version of its website including we the people petitions. The first petition calls for President Trump to release his tax returns. There are already 69,000 signatures. It needs 100,000 by february 19th for it to receive a white house review. The intense rain backed up the sewer, and that sent water a foot deep into homes on kayuga street. City crews helped residents clean up. A levy break is causing problems in hollister. This is sky 7 video from today. It is causing more flooding and evacuations. Emergency crews rescued 21 people because of water rising in the lovers lane area. Officials say they have not had enough time to fix the levy. Theyre blaming the state for not sending enough help. Take a look at this rare site in south San Francisco. The Fire Department tweeted these photos of hail accumulated along south cliff avenue. What you see is a hail and water mix forming ice blocks. They assembled at cesar chavez plaza, signs and banners listing grievances that they expect the new president wont embrace. I hope the new president will hear the people. He is our new president , so we have to demand that he fights injustice, he doesnt take away our civil rights. In the inland east bay around concord, pleasanton, we are seeing light showers, and the showers will pretty much continue through saturday morning before we get a little break. From our Mount Hamilton area we are seeing a mix of rain and snow, now dissipating but likely again as we head into the overnight hours. In the sierra it is turning to quite a bit of snow. It is dumping up there, has been i should say. Chain controls right now heading up to the mountains and a winter storm warning. Temperatures right now, you feel the chill .
