>> no, i did not. >> the police chief said it's one thing to have hundreds of students marches, but it's another when it appears the school principal is right there with them, and in his view, crossing the line. >> he was mouthing with the students what they were saying, expletives for president-elect trump and fist pumping. >> reporter: the principal told us he was there when a couple hundred students turned a lunch time rally into a walk-out thursday, but only to keep them safe. >> if i'm expecting them to act a certain way, i have to act that way as well, so, absolutely not, the use of profanity, the use of any type of language or any type of motions that would encourage them. >> reporter: the students marched four miles. along the way, a window was shattered at the subway, garbage cans turned over, and one threw an orange at a police officer allegedly. >> i believe the actions of the principal can be easily construed as he condoned the behavior, condoned the true an si. >> i support the principal and staff's actions they did to really step in and mitt dpat that situation. >> reporter: three students were arrested by antioch police and dozens more disciplined by the school district including suspensions. in pittsburgh, laura anthony, abc 7 news. tonight, san francisco police say they recognize san francisco as a sanctuary city. in a statement to the chief, he said the election will not change how the police department operates. the command staff joined mayor ed lee to every size the city's commitment to keeping san francisco a sanctiuary city. university of california is planning to help undocumented students who could be deported. they'll convene a special task force to offer legal aide to dreame dreamers, students brought into the u.s. illegally as minors. >> we take the issue seriously, we support them and will do everything we can to ensure their stay at the university is not interprrupted. >> college students held rallies like this one at stanford wanting schools to be sanctuary campuses. they are taking a wait-and-see approach. tonight, we are hearing from the brother of a murder victim killed with his mother and partner in oakland. the suspect is this woman, dana rivers, a well-known transgender rights activist. she appeared in superior court to face the charges. abc 7 news reporter was at that hearing. >> reporter: outside the oakland home where three people were killed friday, there's a growing memorial. framed pictures of 19-year-old stabbing victim, benny wright, with his framed college essay. he wanted to be a doctor or hairdresser. someone who would help other people feel good. >> very, very genuine guy and caring. >> reporter: he lost his brother, benny, and mother patricia, along with her partner, charlotte reid, all on the same day. covered in blood, rivers is accused of stabbing benny to death and shooting and stabbing benny's mother and her partner. court documents say rivers had ammunition and knives in her pocket and accused of setting the garage on fire. >> i do forgive the woman and understand that, you know, there's bigger things in life than hate. >> moved here because they wanted to be who they were, and they wanted to be in an accepting environment. >> reporter: something rivers nay have understood. she previously made headlines as a teacher in sacramento forced from her job after beginning her gender transition. >> charlotte may have known her. >> reporter: students at the high school who knew benny before he graduated came together. >> what could be so bad to want to kill three people, but as a former educator, taking the live of a young person? >> reporter: investigators have not said. in oakland, abc 7 news. >> two teenage boys were shot this afternoon during a fight at strawberry creek park near west berkley. we were there as police investigated the shooting. happened after 3:00 this afternoon at the basketball courts. about 20 teenagers got in a fight. three gunshots fired, and everyone scattered. police have not made any arrests. fbi ascended on a quiet home this morning. abc 7 news was there as agents brought out boxes of electronics and a computer. sources tell us that the search is related to a broader investigation into theft of satellite signals. it's not clear what role the occupants of the house played in the investigation. tonight, there are few people happier in the bay area than san jose state kendra, 23-year-old, confined to a wheelchair for six years now is all smiles after getting her specialized van back. someone stole it friday near her home. we shared the story at 11:00, and a woman spotted the van today near the board walk in santa cruz and called the police. sandra said she was amazed by the support she receive and thanked us for getting the word out. >> wow. that's a great story. >> absolutely. much more ahead for you on this wednesday night. coming up, tuition hikes back on the table for u.c. students and how much they could go up. >> also, why are people camping outside the chick-fil-a? the big deal they hope to get. the big deal they hope to get. raiders on the road this will your business be ready when growth presents itself? american express open cards can help you take on a new job, or fill a big order or expand your office and take on whatever comes next. find out how american express cards and services can help prepare you for growth at open.com. today, uc board of regions discussed something no student wants to hear, higher tuition at all campuses. the current tuition has not changed in six years. it comes after five straight years of increases which more than doubled undergraduate resident tuition from $5400 to $11,000. abc 7 news education reporter looks at the numbers in the future for students. ♪ >> reporter: a rally held in anticipation of the cal stanford game this weekend. while that was going on, uc regions discussed next year's budget that may or may not include a tuition hike. the student said there should be other options. >> we shouldn't be asking students for more money, but work together to ask the state. >> reporter: reality is that state support declined in recent years. in 2000, the state funded 72% of the cost of educating a uc in-state student. last year, it was 41%. following the reception, governor jerry brown and uc president janet napolitano agreed to no hikes. in the meantime, they asked uc reduce spending and accept more out of state students consider implementing more online courses and look into three-year degrees. all of the intention of cutting down on costs. the idea of a possible tuition hike seems to be getting the support of governor brown, who last may said it would be a reasonable thing to ask for. >> if needed, there could be a very minimal tuition increase that would be roughly paid to the right amount of inflation, and in the case of uc, that would be about 300 dollars. >> for uc to maintain the level of service, they need to increase the tuition. >> reporter: others say any hike hurts them. >> like, i'm currently taking student loans, so, like, i'll just increase that. >> reporter: uc says 65% of their students are covered through financial aide. today, the basic tuition and fees is $12,000 a year. at uc berkley, abc 7 news. abc 7 news was in pleasanton today as chick-fil-a fans camped out for opening day tomorrow. as always, they offer a sandwich a week for a year for the first 100 customers. one man came well-prepared. >> it's my birthday. what better way to celebrate a birthday than to hang out at chick-fil-a 24 hours day and night. >> what's better than camping out with mom and the gang? >> that combination of the gusty wind, clear skies that's rapidly cooling us off this evening. overnight, spots close to the freezing mark. chilly on thursday in a lot of spots. right now, just a gorgeous day today. a lot of sunshine tonight. we have clear skies and plenty of stars. outside, showing you the picture from the live look, you got san francisco to the right, oakland to the left, and really a gorgeous, but cold night on the way. already has some spots dipping into the 40s and into the 50s. currently, look around the bay area, dropped to 48, santa rosa, nevada, 46 in napa with a frost advisory in effect tonight. 53, san francisco, oakland, 52 in san jose, and that current number in antioch. tomorrow morning, we're in the 30s, and we're in the 40s, and by the afternoon, it will be bright once again because it's going to be chilly as well. very similar to how it felt today. 60 the high in san francisco, half-moon bay, and 62 in palo al alto. 64, and a cool start of 32 degrees tomorrow morning, 62 for a high. friday and the weekend, friday, delig delightful. a lot of sun, afternoon clouds bubbling up. temperatures seasonal for this time of the year, but by saturday, we're tracking our first of two storms over the weekend. one on saturday is stronger than the one on sunday, so got two, upgraded on storm impact scale, a moderate storm bringing rain, but also some wind. the storm impact scale, two on the board. heaviest right now does look like it's in the morning hours on saturday. that'll be the strongest wind as well. 20 and 40 miles per hour. the rain starts in the north bay, and it will sink into the south bay as we go into the afternoon. here's the gusts, jumping into saturday morning, 6:00 on saturday, you can see winds widespread, gusting between 30 and 40 miles per hour. that's going to come with heavy rain at times, especially in the north bay. future weather, here's the rain, beginning in the north bay, heavy in santa rosa at 4:00 in the morning. mid-morning, it sinks to the south, and by the afternoon, we'll have some showers developing in the south bay, and it will be tapering sunday. sunday, another wave moves in, sunday morning, south of the golden gate, redwood city, san jose, livermore, you could see wet weather sunday afternoon, and that would be the heaviest for the second half of the weekend. total rainfall, here we go, higher amounts in north bay, an average, healthy amount in san francisco, oakland, a third and two-thirds inch from hayward and san jose likely close to half inch of wet weather wrapping up the weekend. the seven-day forecast, cold start in the morning. sunshine in the way for the afternoon. friday, transition day, saturday, the rain and wind primarily in the morning. by sunday, more showers, probably focusing south of the golden gate, tuesday, remaining sunday, and wednesday, another storm moving in for folks to travel. >> thanks. >> sure. coming up, the mini has a big event to take on the toyota we heard of exploding hover boards and smart phones, but potential dangers don't stop there. >> you're basically playing russian roulette. >> some lithium ion batteries and everyday products can be dangerous. why are we still using them? also, the warriors off to a big start this season, but they might have to think the biggest opponent off the court. the battle that could block the proposed new arena in zprsan francisco. a baby about to fall off a live where you live, this is abc 7 news. wait for the microphone. we begin this half hour with the backlash from the election. someone scratched swastikas in a church in the south bay. >> a hateful note left on the windshield of a woman's car. here's the story. >> reporter: two days before the election, swastikas were etched in glass at this taiwanese community center, police checked out security video, but no arrests. >> whoever bu >> whoever put that on, i can't fathom what was going on. it indicates some of the hate. >> church members have been told go home, we don't want you here when out in public. it's also happening at this islamic school next door, women wearing head scarves told they are not welcome, go back home. when out at local grocery stores or the mall. >> it's beginning -- to behave that way because you're in a head scarf. >> the election divided the people into two, and begin courage on both sides, courage to be more violent. >> reporter: the hateful sentiments go further at the trail head to mission peek on monday, a woman who went hiking wearing a bandanna returned to find her car windows smashed and profanity-laced note on the windshield saying, this is our country now, get out. she actually coverings her head to protect her scalp due to a health condition. her friend tweeted about it. >> it was shocking to see someone american-born, grew up in the community, and wearing a bandanna be mistaken for, you know, the hijab, which is ignorant and get out of our country? who's country is it? it's all of our country. that's what makes america great. >> i forgive whoever did this. it's okay, but i do not -- i do not condone it. >> reporter: in freemont, abc 7 news. seven u.s. senators including barbara boxer and diane feinstein asked president obama to impose a ban on the offshore dpriling off the west coast. in the letter to the president, they asked for a permanent ban to replace the moratorium put in place by george h.w. bush. feinstein is up front and center in the supreme court nominee. the california laug maker backs the highest ranking democrat in the new congress. confirming a new attorney general and new supreme court justice will be at the top of the committee's agenda. house minority leader, nancy pelosi, launched her bid to lead the democrats in the next congress. in a letter to all house democrats, she says she has the support of more than two-thirds of the caucus. pelosi pushed back the leadership vote until after thanksgiving break following an outcry from young members pushing for change. she'll meet with mike pence in washington tomorrow. massachusetts senator elizabeth warren tweeted this picture of herself. warren says, quote, she brought a long time friend and new colleague by the office today. opponents of the gwarriors' arena in mission bay took it to the court of appeals today arguing the environmental impact report was flawed. dick lee was in court for the hearing. >> reporter: each side begin an hour to present their arguments before the panel of appeals court justices. >> it will not impede the operation of the adjacent hospital and other uses. >> there would be significant traffic impacts and noise impacts so this project is going to have significant impacts. >> reporter: the mission bay aliengs, a coalition of ucsf stake holders, donors, mission, and staff oppose the warriors' 18,000 seat arena to be built near the mission bay campus. a lower court in july upheld the report clearing the way for construction of the massive venue. it was an important victory, not only for the warriors' organization, but for the city, the mayor, and supervisors, and ucsf already endorsed the project. the alliance filed a lawsuit claiming the arena would have a devastating impact on traffic and the environment. lawyer susan brand remits the alliance. >> there's no analysis of any kind about how this gridlock traffic will affect the development of mission bay south. there's statements that say in a number of places here, don't worry, there's no problem. >> attorneys from the arena project defended the environmental impact report saying that the development would not increase the risk to the environment or impede traffic. >> they would not have any kind of unsafe access. they would not block emergency access to the hospital, and as a result, ucsf supported the project. >> the justices have 90 days to issue an opinion, but tlawyers expect a ruling in december. tesla and solar city vote on the merger of the two bay area companies, a move considered far from a done deal. they say it's not a good bet, $3$3 billion in debt. the supporters say the transaction is a necessary step towards tesla's goal of being an integrated, sustainable energy company, but they admit it requires investor patience. >> most complex business model you can get out there. so that makes everything very complex for the stock. >> question is, is this really strategic merger or really just a bailout?
