mend fences. sources tell abc news, the president-elect is now considering former governor mitt romney has, in the past, been less than diplomatic about donald trump. >> think of donald trump's tower. they had a good discussion, her chief of staff said and she's very encouraged about the coming administration and new direction it will bring. earlier this year, haley called be tempting to follow the siren call of the angriest voices. we must resist that temptation. >> reporter: trump firing back on twitter, the people of south carolina are embarrassed by nikki haley. she supported rubio, but with eventually came over to trump. at 44, she's the nation's youngest governor and rising star, the daughter of indian immigrants who led the charge to take down the confederate flag. but it's not clear what, if any, foreign policy experience she has. former new york mayor rudy giuliani is also lobbying hard for the job. he was at trump tower too, but there were reportedly concerns about his overseas business ties and paid speeches. >> tell us how the transition is going. >> reporter: playing a key role in the transition process, trump's own son-in-law, jared kushner. it's against the law for trump to appoint a family member for a job at the white house, but kushner is exploring whether he adviser. the campaign spokes woman, kellyanne conway cited the bush family. >> he wanted to be an adviser, but he's a son-in-law, family, and that's really what we have to focus on here. i know the bush sons were involved in their father's administration. one became president of the united states. >> reporter: even as the campaign scrambles to fill the secretary of state's job, donald trump had his first sit-down with his first foreign leader. donald trump met japanese prime minister, shinzo abe, a particularly tricky meeting bought of the ideas trump threw out on the campaign trail to change u.s.-japan policies that have been in place since world war ii. david wright, abc news, new york. while that was taking place in new york city, vice president elect mike pence was back in familiar surroundings of capitol hill. he was a member of the 12 years before becoming governor of indiana, meeting lawmakers from both sides of the aisle and reportedly told house republicans they need to buckle extremely hard. he also got together with top democrats from the senate and the house. >> we had a straightforward conversation about how we can work together on infrastructure, issues that relate to child care and the rest. >> as you saw, he had time for an epic gop selfie there. now, pelosi also promised that democrats will stand their ground when they can, but her leadership of house democrats is actually now being challenged by ohio representative tim ryan. in a letter to colleagues, he points out that democrats now have their smallest congressional minority since 1929. he says leaving the current leadership in place leads to more losses in future elections. house democrats will decide the issue at the end of the month. president obama's director of national intelligence, james klapper, has announced he will step down. klapper's resignation was expected. senior most officials could have authorized hacking of elect-related e-mails. the other big story this morning, the first blizzard of the season bearing down on the northern plains. the first significant winter storm of the season already brought snow to the northern rockies and now is moving eastward. driving conditions are expected to deteriorate rapidly with 6 to 12 inches of accumulation. strongin conditions too. meanwhile in the southeast, raging wildfires are causing a health hazard with an increase of patients showing up in doctors' offices with breathing problems as the smoke from the fires makes the air unhealthy. more than 190 square miles have burned in the past week or so fueled by the drought in the region. long time michigan congressman john conyers says he's very worried about his youngest son, carl. the university of houston student missing since tuesday. state and federal authorities are searching for the 21-year-old. >> reporter: an emotional mother describes her 21-year-old son. >> he's happy-go-lucky. he doesn't get riled up about anything. he's not confrontational. he's not argumentative. he's just a good boy. he has a good gpa. >> his apartment. ang gelica york. well, federal investigators now say the barrier separating visitors from gorillas at the cincinnati zoo was sub-standard the day a toddler fell in the exhibit. that little boy was not hurt in the incident last may, thankfully, but zoo officials were forced to kill a 17-year-old silverback gorilla. that barrier, which was built in 1978, had never been a problem before, but investigators found it was, quote, no longer effective. surveillance video from a used car dealership in detroit it's believed the would-be thief was trying to get to one vehicle in reporter: this winter storm is moving fast, but drivers are not. in wyoming, cars spinning, sliding, and stalling in dangerously heavy snow that's in the mountains west of denver, bringing branches down on power lines. state troopers are investigating deadly crashes on snowy roads, one major pileup of trucks clogging the interstate. chains are now mandatory. >> man, it's pretty slippery. it's pretty dangerous out here. >> reporter: the storm is now shoving aside an unusually warm fall. it was golfing weather in lincoln, nebraska. it's 34 degrees, a 46 degree drop in 24 hours. in denver, trump's daughter, ivanka and husband, jared, involved in the meeting as well as seen here. trump should contribute more to the cost of basing u.s. troops there. president obama is urging donald trump to stand strong against russia if or when it violates basic democratic values. during the final overseas trip of the administration, mr. obama is trying to reassure worried european leaders saying he
